That's the mindset why people are going to be disappointed with the trade. "This trade sucks, why didn't they just go get Spencer Jones??"
-
This means nothing if they aren't going to sign a marquee free agent. I don't care about adding 5 middling players at $10-12 million a year. Been there, done that. Its not working.
-
At the time of the trade, he was like a 45 FV guy and the third piece. That's filler.
-
Ill disagree with that one, but I guess were a few weeks away from finding out.
-
The Padres had to give up 3 legit prospects (One top 50-60 and the other two in the 100-150 range) and a good reliever for one guy. I would consider that pretty steep. There was no filler in this trade. There are no Basabe or Diaz in this one, there are no Matt Rose or Bryan Flete. All players sent to the White Sox are promising or useful now.

People are sleeping on Steven Wilson. Its easy to see "29 year old reliever" in the trade and be like WTF? But this guy is actually pretty solid and by all accounts a great teammate as well. If he can have a great half year and be flipped for even more that's just a bonus.

Yeah and so does Luis Robert sometimes. It’s not a death sentence.

I voted A. From the Cease side of things, he’s a good SP but is he Cy Young contender consistently good? Maybe, he’ll need to prove that this year. There’s as much risk that he’s more 2023 Cease than 2022. I would expect him to have a good year for the Padres as I think 2023 was more of a the team was the problem situation more than Cease just not being as good as we saw in 22. From the White Sox side, you get 3 legit prospects and a potential flip candidate. The three legit prospects to me is a big deal. The reality is we were never getting those top 10-15 guys that were fantasized about around here. What we did get is a top 100 prospect plus two more guys who have been in and around the top 100 within the last year. Thorpe is a nice prospect, he has an outstanding changeup and great control. And he’s close to being ready. Iriarte is an electric arm with a high ceiling. Zavala is a toolsy OFer with a high ceiling. These guys aren’t lotto tickets they are legit prospects. This is a major boost to a system that’s lacking high ceiling talents and especially starting pitchers. For a team that’s not going to spend big in free agency this to me is an ideal trade to try and have this team headed in the right direction in the next few years. I much prefer this type of deal over one super prospect and then some fillers. This seems like the type of trade everyone is going to be happy about once they cool off from expecting way more than they should have and get to see some of these kids perform.

Man way too many of you guys got got by the idea teams would trade a Wyatt Langford or Jackson Merrill in these deals. That’s not happening for anyone.
-
Yes, but in 15 years or so
-
When people in the industry use the term steep I kinda roll my eyes when “palehosefan321” posting on Soxtalk says the deal stinks.
-
I wouldn’t turn this down. This team is an absolute disaster. Thorpe is a top 100 guy, Iriarte is right there on the top 100 border. Zavala is a 19 year old lefty with an extremely high ceiling. Walked 94 times last year, power increased each year, steals bases, has a cannon for an arm. people really would rather have snelling and two fillers over this? Insane to me with the state of this organization.
-
Neither do I but at least you know he’s getting every opportunity to be a starter.
-
I love this trade. Thorpe is good, they don’t trade for Iriarte if they view him as a reliever so they like something there and that’s an electric arm. Zavala, I think that dude will get into the top 100 here in the future. Slam dunk to me for 2 years of Cease coming off a down year compared to 2022. This is far better than the crap floated around earlier and what Burnes went for. Easy.
-
Yes Zavala!
-
Hopefully one of Zavala or marsee are in this too
-
Oh yeah, boo hoo your favorite team just got a future
-
The report said multiple notable prospects so hopefully we see soon
-
Need to hold off until I see the return, or it might be me getting tagged
-
Great destination, that system is ripe with good prospects
-
The real win of this trade is the friends we made along the way
-
That's true, but it certainly felt like he was an afterthought.
-
Ill never understand why everyone pegged him DOA after 65 at bats in a sunk limp to the finish line last season. I don't know why we invested at all in Maldonado and Stassi when they should have just let Lee take it this season. I guess they gotta keep that "for the fans" mirage going.
-
If the White Sox were really asking for some of the names or packages that are being floated I imagine a deal would have been done already. Getz is obviously still asking for the moon, and rightfully so.
-
Yeah I would always take SS, those are usually one of the best athletes. That and CF.
