  1. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 03:29 PM) Levine is basically saying that the Sox could probably beat any package out there for Tejada if they want to because they have a good combination of prospects and established players to trade. so it sounds more like this is his opinion as opposed to any solid rumor? I do this deal in a heartbeat, and Juan is one of my favorite players on the Sox. McCarthy is going to be very good, no denying that. But... Pods Gooch Kong Thome Miggy Dye AJ Crede Anderson beat the living hell out of Pods Gooch Carl Kong Dye A-Row AJ Crede Uribe This move would allow us to keep Gooch batting in the 2 hole being we'd have no need for more power lower in the order. Gooch has proven he can do one hell of a job in that slot. That's just a monster line-up...potentially 160 long balls from the 3-6 slots. Pitching MB JC FG JG JV beats the living hell out of MB FG JC JG OH/BM We're upgrading our SP from last season. The bullpen is the only decrease in quality. Miggy is just as good, if not better, defensively than juan. Anderson, according to those in the know, is just as good in CF, if not better, than A-Row. So defense could feasibly improve from last season, when we finished 2nd in MLB.
  2. Those who are claiming that JV is a downgrade hare smokin' something. JV would have the best stuff on the staff behind the Count, it's only a matter of Coop getting ahold of him and setting him straight, which Coop has proven he can do with struggling pitchers on a consistent basis. Garland did very well for the Sox last season, but he's not dominant nor does he have the ability to be dominant. I can agree, to an extent, with Fathom when he talked about shopping Jon around and see what kind of interest is out there. Although I do not like the idea of trading pitching for O, even if KW were determined to turn that O around for some SP. Quality SP is extremely scarce these days which means you can only trade Jon for a decent replacement. With this trade, I think we'd be trading for an upgrade instead of a decent replacement.
  3. QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 12, 2005 -> 02:15 PM) If you are Joe Crede and watching as the greatest Sox batter of all time moves on to another team, do you realize it's a business, and the team will dump you in a heartbeat, so you better get all you can, when you can? Agreed. But.... we've seen Joe and his personality, my impression is he doesn't like big changes. I think if given the choice of the same money here or elsewhere, he'd want to stay here. So, if he keeps Boras it's because he has somehow gotten the impression that the Sox would lowball him on a contract offer. That's the only reason I can see him staying with Boras. I don't know what's given Joe this impression, I think the Sox have been VERY fair with players we've signed as well as the offers made to players we didn't sign. So, if Joe thinks he'd get a fair offer and wants to stay in Chicago, he'd dump Boras, IMO.
  4. If I remember correctly, big Juan Uribe dumped Boras last offseason and promptly signed a 3 year deal with the Sox immediately afterward. If you're Joe "f***ing" Crede, having established yourself as a Chicago hero last postseason, knowing that the Sox have been oh-so patient with you throughout all of your struggles, knowing that the Sox WILL NOT negotiate with your agent which essentially spells your departure from Chicago, would ya dump Boras and see what a new agent could do in keeping you in Chicago? Has anyone "in the know" heard any rumbles of this being a possibility. I think Joe would have to believe that the Sox would offer him a reasonable long-term deal as long as he had a different agent, but would that be enough for him to dump Boras?
  5. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Dec 9, 2005 -> 03:17 PM) Probably not - at least the way you are describing it - unless you're a teacher, but that's another subject. cool. i didn't think so but I'm trying my best to minimize my tax bill this year. thans, kap.
  6. I go to school fulltime in my spare time through the local community college. I'm taking advantage of their online courses which means that I really don't attend classes but complete all my required work, research, and reading online at my home. My monitor is dying and I'm looking to purchase a new lcd. I'm just curious if the monitor would be deductible as a school expense? Any input would be appreciated.
  7. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 06:37 AM) But it sets a slippery slope of "I'm sorry SoxFan101, you can't have that alcohol because somebody else thinks it is bad." or "I'm sorry SoxFan101, you can't listen to that music because somebody thinks it is offensive" or "I'm sorry SoxFan101, you can't eat that because somebody was offended at the way it was made." You get to make the choice to put yourself in the situation where you know there will be smoking going on. If you don't like that establishment's choice -- then voice your opinion with your dollars and don't go there.
  8. Anyone use that Google toolbar with their Firefox? Any good or just more clutter in the browser?
  9. I doubt it's very difficult for anyone to take someone's comedy act and make them out to be an idiot...but hey, way to go David Cross. And ole Larry isn't much better to actually spend a chapter of his book talking s*** about another comedian's political views.
  10. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 05:39 AM) How does everybody know what the budget should be? I mean really know. I just can't fathom careing if a player makes an extra million. I understand it makes for a more interesting off season playing GM, but as a fan, I don't really care if JR makes 1 million or 10 million next season. Well, if you believe what you read, the Sox don't operate for profit but rather for franchise value. So in a sense we can gauge where the payroll should be for next season based upon last year's payroll increased proportionally to the attendance increases/merchandising increases.

QUOTE(Spiff @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 05:51 PM) Modifying, yes, so they could play games from Japan. Nobody even owned cd burners when the PS1 was around. I played burned games on PS1, back in '99 or '00. I don't remember when the PS1 was released though, so it may have been pretty late in the game.
  13. QUOTE(Wanne @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 08:29 PM) Yeah...if he regains his confidence and doesn't come in and immediately walk the first two batters he faces. If he could be used in a package...I wouldn't cry losing him. I think he cost me 2 remotes last year when he'd come in! i'd imagine that some clutch pitching in the 13th and 14th innings of a world series game could do wonders for his confidence. Marte, who i had declared upon his entry in the game that he would get the (L), was REALLY impressive in that game and showed some balls. I think he's going to get back on track next season. With that said, if there's a deal out there for an impact player I'd deem Marte expendable and just go with 1 lhp, Cotts, in the 2006 Sox pen.
  14. The only thing I don't like about this move is that a ring ceremony on Opening Day starts the season on last year's high note. It's going to suck if they lose the 1st game against the Indians and then get the rings the next day.
  15. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Nov 20, 2005 -> 03:31 PM) If the Phillies eat half of the contract, we end up paying $8 million for a prime hitter, if he is healthy. But, he is just as big a risk as any free agent out there this year, even Konerko and we would only be tied for 3 years. I say, Kenny needs to jump on this before Cleveland. In 2 weeks, my guess is that Kenny will be Pat Gillick's Siamese twin at the Winter Meetings. If CLE ends up with Thome and are able resign Millwood, we're going to have one helluve tough time with them next season. Not only because their offense gets that much stronger, but this probably means that, unless we get Delgado, we'll still have a weak DH on an already average/below average offensive team.
  16. QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 10, 2005 -> 12:50 PM) From today's trib, comments from yesterdays press conference: "I want more speed," said Guillen, whose Sox finished third in the AL with 132 stolen bases. "It's not fair to get [scott] Podsednik on base, Podsednik on base, Podsednik on base and when the kid doesn't get on base, the heat comes to him. "Hopefully we can get somebody who can run. I want a second hitter so we can put Iguchi down in the sixth or seventh spot to get more [run production] out of him." _____________________________________________ I agree the sox need to have another OBP option with speed in case of an injury to Pods, and to give the sox more options for scoring runs. Interesting call though where would you put that #2 hitter with speed. Ideas? castillo? pierre? furcal? i think oz has got kenny's ear, he proved it last season. this is what i like to hear.
  17. I really looked at this award as a given for Kdub. This is rather disappointing.
  18. When you lost your virginity, did you want some more?
  19. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:30 AM) Here's the other question though...we basically have no idea how old Contreras really is. We know that in Cuba, for years, he'd spend games throwing 150+ pitches every time out. We think he's in his late 30's, and he might even be pushing into his 40's. How much of an extension do we want to give a guy like that? a 1 or 2 year extension, at 5-6M per. I agree about his age, but he just seemed to get stronger in the late innings this season. The guy is a work horse.
  20. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:13 AM) In other news, Southsider is expected to post tomorrow.
  21. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 12:28 AM) Also, don't discount the El Duque/Don Cooper factor. I think the best thing that happened to Contreras, besides getting out of NY, was Cooper as the pitching coach and El Duque in his ear. PLUS, having a lot of Hispanics on the team, including the manager. I bet a lot of teams have noticed that. Not saying he hasn't put it all together, but if I'm a GM, I would be weary of taking him away from the White Sox situation. This is exactly why you DO NOT trade Contreras, sign him to an extension. This is a guy from a VERY meager background who loves Chicago, gave him a ring, and loves the organization. If there were ever a prime opportunity for a nice discount, it's Count. I really get the impression that he likes stability. Even though he was largely ineffective in NY, he was very upset to be traded. He'll take less to avoid the trouble of changing teams and atmospheres.
  22. I don't have figures to back this up, but hear me out... The LARGE majority of individuals making minimum wage are people under the age of 18 just dipping their toes into the job market. They are not reliant upon minimum wage to survive. I think I can spot minimum wage jobs when I'm out, just look for the jobs that require no skill whatsoever beside the ability to show up at work. These jobs, atleast in my experience, are nearly ALWAYS filled by young teenagers. In addition, individuals who are hired at minimum wage often do not stay at minimum wage after their 3-6 month probation period. Stick with a job and you shall receive greater pay.
  23. I wouldn't rule the sCrUBS out of making the series, despite all their deficiencies. The NL, as a whole, is really weak, imo. Especially with STL and HOU getting older, there really isn't a powerhouse team in that league. MIL will be much better, PHI will be a force, and then ATL will be good enough to go somewhere. The NL West is a f***ing joke from top to bottom.
  24. QUOTE(greg775 @ Oct 31, 2005 -> 05:56 AM) Maybe the Braves want to learn from us how to actually get it done in the postseason. Kidding. But I was thinking the other day: Isn't it nice when a Chicago team finally makes the finals that the team gets the job done? The Bulls never lost a championship series if I'm not mistaken. Each of their titles came without losing a Finals first. Same with the Sox. Finally got to the World Series and completed the deal. None of this happy to be there, learn from it and try to get em next time around. I'm glad we got it done with no regrets. I hear ya man, that would be some heartache to lose in the WS. Seeing the Houston rally on Sportscenter really made me realize how much that would suck. I mean sure, you made it to the series which signifies a good season, but s***, ya didn't get it done. Not much to really celebrate.
