QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 7, 2015 -> 04:17 PM) very well thought out.... the only problem in your project / mock i have is EJ and no backup sp to use in case .... same thing as last yr, depending on hector and he bomb, the yr before with the other pitcher i think paulino and he bomb. One would think that signing Jacob Turner to a $1.5 contract might mean they would be thinking of him as that backup pitcher. Wouldn't that make sense?

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 10:12 PM) Trades for Lawrie White Sox get: Brett Lawrie As get: Erik Johnson and Thaddius Lowry Trades for CarGo and DJ LeMahieu White Sox get: CarGo and LeMahieu Rockies get: Frankie Montas, Adam LaRoche, Carlos Sanchez and Avi Garcia Bold trade prediction White Sox trade Jose Quintana to the Dodgers White Sox get: Joc Pederson, Jose DeLeon and Austin Barnes Dodgers get: Jose Quintana Then after Hahn makes a flurry of trades, signs two pitchers: Doug Fister 1 year $9 million Trevor Cahill 1 year $4.5 million plus incentives (Coop'll fix him) Ok let's see how bad I get crucified I like most of what you predict, but I would change to the following (with an associated crucifixion as well): Lawrie for Chris Beck and Jacob May CarGo only for LaRoche, Montas and Garcia Sale (not Q) to the Dodgers for Seager, Puig and Barnes Sign Pfister These moves, if at all possible, would really improve our offense from last year, allow us to replace bad OF defense, and have us hope that a combination of Pfister, Eric Johnson and Jacob Turner could replace the 24 wins of Sale and Samardzija.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 01:59 PM) Unrealistically who do I want? - Nolan Arenado Realistically who do I want? - Todd Frazier Who do I think the Sox will actually acquire? - Brett Lawrie (and I'm okay with that) I think the Sox will look at Frazier but it sounds like the Reds are okay with keeping him so the Sox would probably have to over pay. I'm not giving up Anderson, Quintana or Fulmer for 2 years of Frazier. If they wanted to work out with some of our secondary trade chips I'm all for it. Lawrie is obviously the most realistic. It sounds like Beane wants to get rid of him so it shouldn't take a whole lot. I think the Sox have a good shot at him without having to sell the farm. When is the last time the Sox got better value than Oakland in any deal?

Where did John Danks and his $16M salary go??

Last winter I made a series of suggestions as to what the Sox should do. Among those was acquiring Kendry Morales. There were a group of regulars on this board who scoffed at that notion. He certainly would have been a major improvement over LaRoche, and would have given the lineup that much more flexibility as a switch hitter. Unfortunately, Hahn spent more money on LaRoche, and we now have to live for another year with that decision. The only possible silver lining is that LaRoche's hand was really sore all of last year, and he will bounce back this year.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 05:13 PM) Did Hawk fire DD? The way I remember it, Dombrowski was being groomed by Roland Hemond to replace Hemond as the GM. Evidently, Hawk convinced Reinsdorf that he (Hawk) could do a great job as GM. Dombrowski looked at that, and left taking an offer from Montreal.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 03:53 PM) Dombrowski also offered a higher rated bunch of prospects. I don't remember Dontrelle Willis being refused by the sox and getting that deal nixed, it was just that Maybin and Miller were more attractive than Fields and others You could be right about the prospects, but I am sure Willis was the sticking point for us; and, as I recall, Kenny thought he had the deal done - he was crowing to the writers at that moment, similar to what he was saying before we lost Tori Hunter to the Angels. Bottom line - Dombrowski delivered the goods, acquiring one of baseball's all-time best hitters.
-
In 2007 Kenny Williams thought he had a deal in place to acquire Miguel Cabrera. I remember that very well - it was a brief but heady moment. And guess who crashed that party? Dombrowski, who agreed to take on the contract of Dontrelle Willis along with Miggy. He won, Kenny lost, and that is a good picture of the two of them.

In sports, as in life, opportunity only knocks a few times. To me, this certainly seems like one of those times, and it will be terribly frustrating if (as is likely going to happen) he moves on to another franchise. This guy has the kind of credentials, the savvy, the experience and the knowledge that our organization has not had for a very long time. And, at least IMO, desperately needs right now.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 03:03 PM) Sure but why? Rick Hahn is a good baseball man. Now if KW leaves maybe Rick or Dave D would move in somehow to handle that position Comparing Rick Hahn to Dombrowski is like comparing Avi Garcia to Miggy Cabrera. In fact, you can look at the three-way Peavy deal and see us with Garcia and the Tigers with Iglesias and use that to contrast the two. I think Reinsdorf doesn't want someone who wants extended power, so it won't happen. Larry Himes brought Frank Thomas, Jack McDowell, Robin Ventura, Alex Fernandez, Wilson Alvarez to the Sox and was fired after a little over a year. Jerry wants someone he can pressure, and that would not be Dombrowski.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 02:52 PM) The only realistic way of hiring him would be if JR said, okay Dave, I need to bring you in here to help me evaluate what is going on with the club and if we are headed in the right direction (with an understanding that long-term Dave wants a more lucrative job so this is just a temporary thing for the rest of the season...a friend helping a friend). Can you come in and give me your opinion of the franchise, the direction, the people, and what you think. The downside of this, you might piss some people off and you might also get an inherently biased answer (cause Dave could be looking out for himself and want the job to begin with), but depending on what his goals are, you might get a pretty clear assessment as the owner of the franchise from an incredibly respected guy and knowledgeable guy. I always wish we did something similar with LaRussa (who knows, maybe Jerry has). Plus, lets be honest, Dombrowski should have a pretty good idea of our franchise anyway, given the rivalry. You are absolutely right. there is almost no chance we could hire him without all kinds of repercussions. My thinking, however, is that THAT is really what the franchise needs - a real kick in the rear and a top shelf baseball man at the helm. the Bears did that with Jim finks, and that was the basis for the '85 champs. There are only a few top shelf guys - Friedman, Schurholz, St Louis whomever - we need that kind of person at the helm. Maybe Jerry is afraid of that.
-
We screwed up years ago by allowing him to leave. Get him in here somehow - it would truly be a shame to miss out on him again. Consultant, CEO, boot Kenny (not going to happen, but one can dream ...).
-
The guy's track record includes the Expos, Marlins and tigers. He is considered one of the best talent evaluators in baseball.
-
http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/mlb/477...dave-dombrowski Reinsdorf should already be on the phone - this guy is one of the best in baseball, and he was roland Hemond's protege many year ago, before Hawk talked his way into the GM job. Dombrowski's credentials are the best.

QUOTE (lvjeremylv @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 12:01 PM) Reinsdorf is mega rich, and he probably pulls in a huge profit every year even when the Sox are awful, just based on the TV deal alone. So I think it's a fallacy to suggest he's taking any kind of a hit. But you're right when you say he's trying to win and put asses in seats. It's not financially motivated, though. He'll make money hand over fist whether the Sox win 73 games or 93 games. Scherzer over Shields, please. There's no reason the White Sox couldn't carry a $150M payroll every year. They'd be extremely competitive at that price point if they continue doing the things they've been doing, and that would allow them to extend Samardzija during the season if the South Side is where he wants to pitch. If not, then the Sox could use that money to get someone else next off-season. There's NO REASON AT ALL the Sox can't go out and get Scherzer. If they did, they'd be replacing either Noesi or Danks (if they could unload his contract) with a legit Cy Young contender, and would at the same time be taking him away from our toughest division rival. Talk about a coup, and a perfect ending to an already amazing off-season.... Agreed wholeheartedly, especially your comment that we ought to be a $150M payroll team. This constant notion of penny pinching based on attendance has really had one result - less people attending Sox games. Acquiring Scherzer would change the entire dynamic of the outside perception of the Sox, the eternally cynical view of our fan base - including many in this forum - allow us to compete with those north side incompetents, and put us in the position to challenge for the pennant on an annual basis.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 11:14 AM) the cost in yrs and salary would be too much. Not if they do not keep Samardzija.
-
I do not post here frequently, though I am an avid lurker. In November I suggested the following acquisitions: Melky Cabrera Kendry Morales - Hahn one-upped me by sigingn LaRoche Emilio Bonifacio Zach Duke Brandon McCarthy - Hahn did even better by getting Samardzija Luke Gregorson - Again he did much better by signing Robertson There was a lot of scoffing with many saying we did not have the payroll to do those things. Reinsdorf really wants one more run at a championship, so he is taking a big payroll hit to see if he can win and get fannies back in the seats. I could not be happier as to what has been accomplished this winter. Obviously it is all on paper, but this team looks like a real contender. Can't wait to see the season start! PS One more thing to think about: If there was a way to dump both Danks and Viciedo, then either Scherzer or Shields becomes a possibility.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) yeah i agree with you, but i wonder if the FO is agreeing with us. I have a feeling that Bonifacio wants over $4M per year and wants to start. We may not be able to pay that, or we may want to wait him out to see if he can be signed on our terms.
-
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 11:42 AM) A lot of mentions in other threads and in this one of getting Bonifacio. He can play the infield and outfield, which is good versatility. He's a bad hitter which is bad. We want a lefty catcher in there- I'll take Kottaras over Brantley We need someone who can play centerfield- Danks does that well It'd be nice then to have two right handed bats to platoon/take at bats away from Gillaspie and LaRoche. It'd be great if Saladino were ready on opening day. If not someone, like Adam Rosales or Ramon Santiago makes sense. So does Gordo Beckham. Assuming that player can cover any infield position, you could try to pick up the best lefty-killing bat you can find. Chris Denorfia is one name. Allen Craig. Keep Tank? At the risk of being highly redundant - since I have posted this suggestion about a dozen times now - the best available alternative for what we need on that bench - RH, infield and OF, possible platoon at 3B - is Bonifacio. He kills lefties, can even play CF. He is not an every day player, and maybe that is what he is looking for, but he fits us like a glove.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) It makes sense to me but I never would have offered Viciedo arbitration in the first place, so maybe they see more in him? God, what is it that they see? You are right, it would seem that the only reason he was tendered is that they either DO see something, or Hahn is certain he can deal him. It is downright puzzling, tho had they not gotten JR to approve the money for Melky, maybe their plan at that point did include Tank.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2014 -> 07:49 AM) You can make a bench work with: Viciedo Danks2 Saldino/Leury and have a role for everyone. Viciedo could get a few hundred PAs as a platoon partner for LaRoche, pinch hitter, and backup corner OF. I just don't know why you'd want to do that. That's not much different than having Konerko limit our bench options last year. Take Tank's money, sign Bonifacio - who hits lefties exceptionally well- and can play CF, 2B and 3B, and you have the answer. That gives our bench maximum flexibility, and allows a platoon player for either Gillaspie or LaRoche when desired.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 15, 2014 -> 09:02 AM) Assuming we move Tank soon, what does everyone think that the Opening Day Roster will look like? (also assuming no one gets injured during Spring Training). This is what I have: Lineup: Eaton CF Cabrera LF/RF Abreu 1B/DH LaRoche DH/1B Garcia RF/LF Gillaspie 3B Ramirez SS Flowers C Sanchez 2B Bench: Brantly C (Nieto goes to AAA to get at bats) Saladino IF (platoon 3B; I believe someone posted an article on here in a thread that said he would be ready by spring training) Danks OF L. Garcia IF/OF (25th man, pinch runner, can play emergency OF; would love them to sign Bonifacio for this though, and to take at bats away from some lefties Rotation: Sale Shark Quintana Noesi Danks Bullpen: Robertson CL Petricka SU Duke SU (L) Guerra Jennings (L) Putnam Surkamp LR (L) (doesn't hurt to have a third lefty as Robin can't burn through all of them by the 7th inning this way, can also serve as mop-up guy) I agree wholeheartedly on Bonifacio. He can even play a little CF, and could be platooned with Gillaspie at 3B against tough left handers. I would also like to see them make a play on Daniel Nava. Boston has to get rid of a couple of their many OF's. Nava is a switch hitter, can play first and OF, could spell Avi, could be platooned with LaRoche, and only makes $1.9M.

Did the sox hit all of their offseason targets

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Dec 14, 2014 -> 04:46 AM) With arbitrations and pre-arb salaries we're at $118 million with not much of a bench. If we can dump Viceido for quality bullpen arm and or defensive infield glove and prospects I'd be even more happy. Where are you getting that number from? I have them at about $110M right now. -
QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Dec 14, 2014 -> 09:03 AM) Besides adding another cheap reliever (Axford, Bell, Michael Roth), starter (Chen, McGowan), or bench (Ichiro), I'm BEYOND happy with this offseason Hope our Opening Day team looks like this: Line-up: 1. Eaton, CF 2. Melky, LF 3. Abreu, 1B 4. LaRoche, DH 5. Garcia, RF 6. Gillaspie, 3B 7. Ramirez, SS 8. Flowers, C 9. Johnson, 2B Bench: Viciedo, Nieto, Sanchez, FA OFer Rotation: Sale, Samardzija, Quintana, Danks, Noesi 'Pen: Robertson, Duke, Jennings, Webb, Petricka, Rodon, Guerra Marcus Johnson starts in AAA. Tyler Saladino is a reserve; Sanchez starts at 2B.

What an offseason - here is a recap of improvements; LaRoche instead of Dunn Melky Cabrera instead of Viciedo Avi Garcia instead of De Aza or Moises Sierra Samardzija instead of Scott Carroll David Robertson instead of Belisario Zach Duke instead of Scott Downs Carlos Sanchez instead of Gordon Beckham Hector Noesi instead of Eric Johnson Now, if there was a way to sign Bonifacio (who kills lefties) as well as trade for Daniel Nava from the Red Sox, we would be one of the favorites to win the American League (if we are not already!).
