  1. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Dec 10, 2016 -> 04:15 PM) Peter Parker as a young teenager is a fresh story, in the terms of the films. Both Garfield and McGuire played Peter Parker in his senior year of high school, when he's about to graduate. Plus, I prefer Peter the teen to Peter the adult There is literally no difference between Spider-Man as a sophomore in high school and a senior in terms of storytelling - that's what I mean though, if we're doing that story, then why not Miles Morales? Peter Parker is an adult college graduate who's been fully independent for several years.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 12:21 PM) I'm at work now so can't check the receiver but I bought it in 2006/2007 so I'm guessing it's not ARC compatible. I'd bet money that it's not because the HDMI standard was brand new then, so yeah, your original solution is probably the route you need to take
  3. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 12:16 PM) They just. Keep. Rebooting. The fact that Peter Parker was some dumb s*** kid in Civil War instead of a man facing one of the most important decisions of his life really made no sense. BUT WE MUST ALWAYS INTRODUCE THESE CHARACTERS AS BRAND NEW. There's no reason they couldn't have had some dumbass newspaper montage of Spider-Man over the years and had Iron Man meet with some grizzled 30's something Peter Parker with support from a smoking hot Mary Jane. But NOPE. Lather, rinse, repeat. Start with the origin. The Peter Parker I know and love is a f***ing hilarious and confident man. Plus you will never do better than Tobey Maguire as young Peter anyway. AND NOW PETER DEALS WITH BEING A NERD IN HIGH SCHOOL FOR THREE MOVIES BEFORE WE REBOOT HIM AGAIN One of the key moments in the original Civil War comic was when he took off his mask and said "My name is Peter Parker. I've been Spider-Man since I was fifteen years old." His appearance in the Civil War movie was a cool fan service, but otherwise added nothing to the actual plot.
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 12:01 PM) This is posted on AVS fourms as well but thought I might ask some of you guys in here. Just got my first Smart TV (Sony XBR X850D) If your TV and stereo both use HDMI ARC, and you are using a new enough HDMI cable (if it's less than, say, 5 years old, it will be) then your HDMI signal is bi-directional. Your TV does, that was easy enough to google, but I don't know if your receiver does. Look at your HDMI ports, see if they say "ARC" next to them. edit: I didn't notice you already said your receiver is old, my bad. So you probably already know this, lol
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 12:02 PM) If you're counting on Paul Ryan to save this country's soul, he's made it very clear he'll sacrifice that for lower taxes. And if you're counting on the Supreme Court to save it...we saved Donald Trump a seat so that they won't save it. Our institutions, the norms, the rule of law don't matter when people stop enforcing those things as a tradeoff to get what they want. My post I made just below this may as well be this exact post too.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 11:47 AM) Honestly, a President even openly musing or trying to pre-justify prison camps for Muslims in the year 2016 should be grounds for impeachment. eta: or when he calls for the execution of people who were exonerated by DNA evidence years after their exoneration, which got surprisingly less coverage than EMAILS OMG EMAILS this year. There are provisions for preventing abuses of power in the Constitution, but they're only effective if the other government branches are willing to enforce it. Paul Ryan is a coward, and I don't find much reason to trust the Supreme Court, especially since Trump will get to appoint who he wants now (rightfully Obama's appointment, but again, only to the extent other branches cooperate).
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 10:51 AM) Is Trump becoming a true authoritarian the most likely course of his presidency? No. Being a bad president is. Being a good president is also a possibility. But just because it's unlikely doesn't mean you open up the putin toolbox for him and say "Hey, be good with these. I trust you". It's the exact reason we have civilian control of the armed forces and things like that.
  8. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 10:43 AM) You're saying it COULD happen and then pointing to what history has shown us about authoritarian regimes. You're implicitly saying Trump is following that same path, not that he COULD. If it's not a legitimate fear of yours there's little reason to point it out. I see the argument you're making here, and it's not really without merit, but here's the thing - this even being a discussion with Trump is itself unprecedented, at least for modern presidents. This isn't normal and we are pushing back against normalizing it.
  9. It's just kind of funny though, we just had a whole ass summer where Clinton was being ripped for innuendo about what she might do because of all her connections here and there and then Trump turns around and literally does those exact things he blasted her for, and the collective reaction is basically "yeah, but..."
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 10:23 AM) Selling a Senate seat apparently. He's going to prison? Yesssssssssssss Wait, Pence would be president. Noooooooooooo
  11. What exactly will it take for people to not make excuses for Trump? Like if someone saw a direct deposit receipt from a donor that said "Quid Pro Quo for Political Actions" on it, is that sufficient?
  12. I don't know why everyone seems to think Peter Parker needs to be a young teenager. He hasn't actually been a teenager in the comics in decades. The whole time I've been reading comics he's actually been an adult. If they were gonna do the teenager route they really should've done Miles Morales, that's a fresh story.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 07:15 PM) How come I was told to cut it out when I was calling her Hilly and Crooked Hilly and we're calling him 'crooked Donnie?' He's the President of the United States, folks. I'd show him some respect or maybe move to Canada. I mean I wouldn't vote for him as is my right to abstain with 2 horrible candidates, but he is my president now. I wasn't crazy about Obama except for his Sox and Chicago fandom but I never showed him disrespect. Let's face it there are inconsistencies on this board which leans Democratic over Republican big time. You were doing it over and over and over and over and over again and asking a dozen questions that weren't really questions and ignoring the substantive answers people gave you, in the Democratic thread specifically, and it got to the point where people found it annoying. That wasn't specifically because of what you said.
  14. Hillary Clinton appointed the top donor to her foundation to a Cabinet position. Wait, that's Donald Trump. My bad.
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 04:12 PM) If you want to see something unreal, look at Anderson's splits ahead in the count and behind in the count. Someone should beat that in his head all winter. If he ever gets somewhat patient, there is no telling how good he could be. Yeah, it's like at times it seemed like he was trying to prove a point that he belonged in the majors and he was trying to keep hitting the ball, like he is one of those Cubans or Dominicans who never take walks. He doesn't need to do that.
  16. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 12:35 PM) I don't see how the support can get any worse than what it has been. The last 10 years for the most part has been ok attendance to start the year and then really poor attendance to end it. We have the worst tv ratings in the big leagues. And now a new generation of Chicago baseball fans will be Cubs fans, not Sox fans. Short term it's going to be rough, but hopefully there's a payoff in 2-3 seasons. And if the Cubs continue to do well, Hahn just has to point north and say "this is what we have to look forward to in the next few seasons." That's the key, they pretty much hit rock bottom, so I guess maybe that's what I'm interpreting. It's not like eroding fan support is an issue if that's already in full swing. Now it's like concrete, tangible effort to reverse it, so that's what the reaction is for.
  17. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 12:26 PM) There's no doubt that this fan base was ready for the rebuild and mostly everyone is super excited about it. That said, you can bet in a year or two there's going to be plenty of meatheads that turn on it rather quickly. It's obviously the right thing to do though and I can only speak for myself but I'm super excited to see this thing through. There were a lot of Cubs fans moping about how the Cubs were bad ~3 years ago and they look really stupid now, but I think now that Sox fans have seen them do it on the north side, not as many people will need to be sold on the idea that this is the correct way to do things.
  18. The Sox have never done a full tear down and rebuild in the time I've been a Sox fan (early 90s as a kid) and while there has been an obvious, overt resistance to the idea from Reinsdorf and Kenny Williams, I always sensed from other Sox fans that they felt the fanbase wouldn't want to bother with it either. But so far in the past 48 hours I've seen mostly excitement, people are ready to get this started and see it through properly. What do y'all think? Am I off base here?
  19. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 11:24 AM) Not really. One concerns his attempt to quiet his critics and become Hitler 2.0 (SS just come out and say it). The other concerns his propensity to put his reality star narcissism over national security/governance. I'm not going all the way with the Hitler stuff but that behavior, being wholly incapable of letting even minor criticism slide, is vintage Trump. It's not going to chance once he's sworn in. It's not a good thing for a president to be doing either, especially one with weirdo asshole cult-like followers as this one, who take their own conspiracy theories at face value.
  20. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 11:17 AM) That is 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times more worrisome to me than Trump being vocal about the criticism he receives. It's part and parcel though. It's the same issue.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 11:13 AM) And most of Spring Training is not during the Spring. "Winter training" just sounds funny
  22. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 10:58 AM) Wait, so a President can never respond to criticism? And he's advocating violence? Really he shouldn't, that level of think-skinnedness is a really bad look on a president. There's other things he ought to be worried about (put your goddamn phone down and go to some intelligence briefings for f***'s sake, for starters)
  23. What's the market for Robertson looking like right now? I'm too lazy to read all the threads to figure it out, lol
  24. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 10:57 AM) BTW, why do the call them the Winter Meetings when it isn't technically Winter? I guess because "Fall" is for the playoffs and World Series, and everyone considers December a winter month even though it's technically fall for 2/3 of it.
  25. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 10:37 AM) Shouldn't your P/S being cleaning up the power signal anyway, not the UPS? I also had a bad PSU too.
