  1. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 06:37 PM) Some of them have the audacity to attack the US and draw our ire and (more importantly) resources to invest in their destruction. I agree with the GWOT in principle, terrorism is a new type of warfare that poses an unprecedented threat to international security... but our methods and strategy are piss-poor. The neocon solutions were, yeah (let's just blow up whatever we can and try and scare everyone into cooperating). But trying to reverse them once they've been started is like turning an aircraft carrier around in a narrow river.
  2. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 06:30 PM) I've talked about the LTTE here a couple times, but those guys make Al Qaeda look like little-leaguers. The success which the LTTE, Basques and Shining Path (Peru) have makes it hard to believe were really fighting any sort of Global War on Terror. That is a completely and totally different type of terrorist though.
  3. Obama is on CNN talking about the 20 billion in Wall Street bonuses sounding all pissed off (well as close to pissed off as he ever sounds).
  4. If you go to www.illinois.gov and go to the state government page, the link to Blago's profile just takes you back to the homepage.
  5. It's total horses*** that Pete Rose isn't in the Hall. Just wanted to take another opportunity to say that.
  6. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 05:48 PM) dude i fixed it. stop replying so fast. I figured that's what you meant but I wasn't sure.
  7. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) It's more dangerous for a Republican to vote for these bailout/stimulus bills right now than to go along with them. I think you meant to put a negative in one of those options because it looks like you're saying the same thing.
  8. edit: when I pulled this up, the first comment was about Blagojevich, lol.
  9. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 05:24 PM) Wow, even Hendon didnt have his back. SLAUGHTER, shut out The vote happened already? I'm watching something on CNN but I don't know what it is yet.
  10. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 04:30 PM) Unfortunately I had no audio whatsoever....except for the large Sox contingent sitting near me cheering in the upper deck of Minute Maid. I hate you.
  11. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 05:17 PM) That's because the House GOP is from pretty safe GOP areas - most of these guys will not lose their seats even if things swing even more to the left. Their political danger is next to nil. True, good point. The districts that they'd be in danger of losing, the Dems have most of those anyway right now.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) Obviously, I'll never ever in my life forget the jubilation that ensued during Hester's kickoff return. I remember that happening, then Manning threw a TD and the Colts missed the XP, then Rex threw a TD pass to Moose. The Bears led 14-6. Then the game stopped. Nothing else happened after that. Right?
  13. QUOTE (Sonik22 @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) I remember being at the NFC championship game against the Saints. That was easily the greatest time of my life. Somewhere I had a sig of someone's saved that showed the entire ESPN panel picking the Saints, for what reason I do not know but that was obviously an epic failure.
  14. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 04:49 PM) i heard something about lowering the 10% tax bracket to 5% and the 15% to 10%. that could push the bill into bipartisan landslide territory. as far as cloture, i still think it would be a mistake to drag this out to a neccesary 60 vote. give the dems this bill if they want it IMO. Then you run the risk of looking like pussies like the Dems did circa 2003-2005, the GOP is in "back to basics" mode right now. At least the House is, I don't know about the Senate.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 04:32 PM) The Senate will pass a different bill, with some more GOP-friendly provisions, to clear the 60 with room to spare. The House will then pass that version, then Obama will sign. I think you're right.
  16. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) any predictions for the Senate vote on the economic stimulus bill? I believe it will pass, I just wonder if any Republicans will actually vote for this thing or if any Democrats will vote against it. I think it needs 60 votes (I'm not sure what's going on with the second MN seat or if that counts or makes it 59 needed instead). I think all of the 58 in the Dem caucus should vote for it, they need at least a couple Republicans to pass it which will probably happen, I don't think the opposition in the Senate is as hard as it is in the House from the Republicans. I'm sure Obama would rather it pass with 70 yeas than barely scraping by though, the question is whether it actually does pass comfortably.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) "Out! Out! A White Sox winner, and a world championship. The White Sox have won the World Series, and they're mobbing each other on the field!" Thanks Juan. Really. Being out of town I heard the Joe Buck version.
  18. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 04:11 PM) gl to juanny QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 04:20 PM) I wish nothing but the best for Juan. ^^
  19. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 03:07 PM) I am not certain as to why the stories of what a jagoff he is are not more common knowledge but I know first hand that the guy is a complete moron. I don't know about individual stories, but on this board, everyone pretty much knows he's a disaster and hates him.
  20. Isn't the idea that Blago couldn't call his own witnesses a lie he made up?
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 12:22 PM) Because he IS missing the point. And further, he has been a stupendously bad governor - 9% approval BEFORE the arrest? Heh, great minds think alike, they say.
  22. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 12:20 PM) Good question. See, now Blago is babbling once again about all the great things he's done for the people of Illinois. This is where he loses all cred. Not because he hasn't accomplished those things, but because he comes across as missing the point. And also because he hasn't done those things. He sucks as a governor, there is a reason his approval ratings were 8% before this whole ordeal.
  23. QUOTE (Steff @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 10:57 AM) People who not only don't understand their taxes, but people who fly off the handle because they don't understand their taxes and can't shut up for 5 minutes to have them explained to them. I just knew come this time of the year I would be getting a major migraine from the folks who's taxes I do who can't comprehend that the stimulus check you got last year was an advance on this year’s refund. I should have told them I was out of the business this season. Bah, I completely forgot about that. That's 1200 bucks out the window.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 11:17 AM) Well, then, counterpoint, and why this is a mess. Is could you imagine living like a Palestinian, uneducated, unemployed and caged? Has there been a place in the world where people have been treated like that and haven't rebelled unless controlled by a talented dictator? Israel will not be able to insert a government over palestine as successful as to quell the violence, so this wishy washy defense doesn't really work either. It's just sustainable damage. I mean, if they want to do work, look at what Russia has done to Chechnya, that is some great stuff in the book of oppressive government success! Burning homes of parents who have kids that joined the militia...go putin. But as it stands, Israel's policy towards Palestine and vice versa is not something that is going to eventually solve anything. And really, as long as Palestinians are so unskilled and so uneducated, things will not change. Bingo. It's not a denial of Israel's right to defend itself or an endorsement of Palestinian tactics, it's just cold reality. What Israel is doing might sound like a logical response but it's just not going to work.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 11:11 AM) I never said there was a big death toll. But much like the V2s of WWII, it is the mental toll of living under the constant attacks is almost as bad as anything. There were 1750 attacks in 2008, when there was no conflicts until the very end of the year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qassam_rocket I don't dispute any of that. But I think it's fair to expect Israel to have a more nuanced approach than just brute force because it's been shown over and over and over again that doing that just doesn't work (unless you want to resort to genocide which obviously wouldn't go over too well). They seem to have no concept of strategy whatsoever to me. Which in turn directly affects our own strategy since the Arab world basically sees them as the 51st state.
