Interesting take on MLB "salary/payroll cap"/Yankees
lostfan replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 11:18 AM) Low payroll teams like Florida, Tampa, and Kansas City have been on the most profitable lists for years, while collecting a lot of luxury tax money (granted things have recently changed in Tampa, and KC upped their payroll in the last year). They should not have been allowed to stuff that money into their pockets. We're not disagreeing. I want them to spend their money/have a salary floor, too. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 10:35 AM) For a team that is receiving money from the luxury tax revenues, there can be rules made up on how the money is spent, after all the team is making a choice to participate in the program. If you don't want to be forced to spend that money, don't participate in the program. Teams should not get to receive these funds and sit on them, as long as their teams are making a profit. If the team was in the hole and needed the money to survive, it would be different. Well if they were in a small market or didn't earn a lot of revenue for whatever reason, and had to spend all the revenue sharing cash, they probably wouldn't be making much of a profit, which is what I was getting at. I'd say the rules should dictate the team should (at least attempt to) spend the sum of whatever their normal budget would dictate, plus the revenue cash, so they are still allowed to turn a profit like the other teams. How that happens is subjective though. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 10:13 AM) The lack of a floor with the luxury tax is the biggest problem I have with our existing system. If you are taking in money from the system, you should be obligated to spend it if you are turning a profit. I wouldn't say a team should be obligated to spend its profits on operational costs since it's a business and all, but I don't think it's unreasonable to say a team has to spend a certain amount, just to maintain the integrity of the system. If you're receiving money from revenue sharing, I think it's fair to say that money should be spent (and it very well may be for most teams, I don't have access to their books or anything obviously). -
So I was out with my wife on Saturday night at this restaurant/club called Posh in DC, and when she's looking at the menu she asks me "so can I order anything"? She was serious too, I had to laugh, I was like wtf, is this our second date or something, don't you pretty much know how much money I have by now? Yes, you can order the 29 dollar crabcakes, I'm sure I will call you again if you do. :

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 08:44 PM) Everyone who hates the Yankees for spending all this money, saying its bad for the game, would think the owner of their favorite team was the greatest if he shelled out this type of cash for players. The Yankees had $85 million coming off the books and are moving into a new stadium. What did everyone think was going to happen? The only thing that shocks me is they don't appear like they will add Manny as well. It's not the Yankees I have a problem with, they're just doing it because they can. It's MLB's salary system as a whole, it's so top-heavy that it's just ridiculous, and the revenue sharing system sucks. There's no cap, and there's no floor, no real rhyme or reason to anything, it's just a collection of 30 individual teams all doing their own thing. Or at least it appears that way in contrast to the NFL or the NBA. -
^^There weren't as many rules to benefit offense back then, for example a DB could be a DB.

QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 03:45 PM) I guess I have to go buy the 2005 sox dvd myself. I happen to have an extra somewhere b/c my wife got it for me for Christmas not knowing I already had one. I didn't think the solar winds had anything to do with the temperature here on earth because of the magnetic field, but I never read about it in a whole lot of detail. Sounds like a Balta question.

People bring up the turnover thing all the time, I remember hearing this in '06 from people saying that defense was overrated. The fact is they practice the turnover ratio from the start of training camp, so that's fundamentally a part of what the team is about. And it's pretty consistent, year after year.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 01:14 PM) 2) Tampa Bay - not to outdo himself, Lovie also allowed his team to give up a 99 yard drive with Brian Freakin' Griese throwing something like 400 passes in one game (thanks to some bone-head personal foul penalties) Griese is a lot better of a QB than anyone in this town wanted to give him credit for, probably because of his weak arm especially in comparison to Grossman's. Plus, remember when he basically did the same thing at Philly last year?

Hardees will do, just avoid anything carbonated/with caffeine if you can.

Something greasy and with bread, e.g. a cheeseburger. Also something like Powerade if you can find it.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 12:50 PM) Beekman doesn't suck. If you ask me, he was our best and most consistent OL this year. Garza and Kreutz significantly dropped off, St Clair had a solid first couple weeks but then he was awful, and Tait was terrible down the stretch. Beekman is going to get "stonewalled" a lot of times on run plays because of his size but when he gets leverage he is a pretty good OG. Kreutz started declining last year, he's just not the same player anymore. I'm just throwing this out there but I think Beekman can and should replace Kreutz at C while the team looks for a new G (it won't happen though).

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) What do you do with the defense next year? So many of the big money players seemed to regress this year. Is is the coaching or the players? Mostly the coaching but a little of both.

Well even though they pissed their pants in 3 of those 4 games, the NFCS was tough. The AFCS was arguably the best division in football last year, this the Colts and Titans are still good, the Texans are a pretty solid, middle of the road team. The Jaguars completely fell off though.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) Last week's mailbag over at Whitesox.com. I was drinking some apple juice when I first read it. I literally almost choked. Yeah, same, I was drinking some coffee just then.

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 12:05 PM) As long as you've got a good hiding place my man. That I do, but even so my wife wouldn't know the difference between that and the other... ahem... stuff on my computer.

ROFLCOPTER at that sig quote, WTF. Where did you get that from?
-
QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 12:02 PM) Real problem ya got there... Since you're married i'd just use this as an ego boost. Ya know, knowing you still got it even though you're taken. I'm sure you'll play this smartly. I think I'll just score naked pics.

QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 11:49 AM) how many on an NFL roster? you named 7 guys. other than briggs and forte the best guy is our punter. Beekman sucks BTW. That entire O-Line sucks. Hopefully Williams can be decent. Yes, this team needs another OG, but what are you basing this on?

QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) LOL Or I could just try to articulate myself and not use cursing as an easy out. But there is no phuckin fun in that schit. Now look here motherf***er, watch your goddamn motherf***ing mouth!

Can someone please tell me why I have 3 women who are practically begging me to bang them? One of them is pretty attractive and also has a hot friend that she'd probably bring along. And of course, I'm married, my wife is gorgeous and all but I spend so much time b****ing about being married to her since she is a pain in the ass. Why did I do this to myself? This didn't really happen when I was single. f*** life.

Houston is actually a pretty solid up-and-coming team.

QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 11:26 AM) I just wanna thank you for showing me the perfect way to spell the word phuck on here. If you want to say it in past tense you can type "fuct," as in "I was really fuct up last night."
