  1. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:25 PM) Nixon. Goldwater. Nixon doesn't really count IMO because he ran again and won. Until he did himself in during his second term and ruined his legacy forever.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:16 PM) Out of curiousity if a couple of guys in Klan robes had stood in front of a polling place in say Pilsen, would people still feel the same way? I would ignore it since I know they're not going to confront me directly in that situation the same way I did when I saw a KKK table at a gun show I went to recently. Those guys don't even deserve my attention, let alone my respect. Although when we are talking about "black panthers" are we talking about the civil rights movement or are we talking about today's black separatists (and btw the New Black Panther Party gave an official statement that they weren't involved in anything like that)? If it's the former, there is no equivalency. If it's the latter the point is probably valid.
  3. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 12:26 PM) The HS I went to was about 80% African American during the time I was there. I learned that song and always wondered what there is about the lyrics that makes it the 'Black NA.' Great song, for everyone. The song itself is about not lingering over social injustices in the past and to keep moving forward until you finally reach your goal. The song isn't divisive at all, it's pretty hard not to appreciate IMO. We used to sing it at assemblies in school, first the national anthem, then the black national anthem. I never thought about the last line of the song until now. Pretty deep stuff.
  4. Ugh, between her, Murtha, and Stevens... wtf.
  5. QUOTE (daa84 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 11:21 AM) i agree with you guys on the energy stuff, and breaking the addiction on foreign oil...but that type of stuff is dependent on technology, so to put a time frame on it isnt reasonable IMO....i understand he can help to redistribute more funding in those areas, but those are things that will certainly take a much longer time than obama's term (and probably longer than 10 years) to be implemented, even if all the new technologies necessary are developed right now It's a goal set deliberately high, I don't have a problem with it if the goal isn't reached within that timeframe. If you work towards it and fail, you're still very far along and can consider it successful if you eventually get it done. Because right now, we're just sitting on our asses, for the past 30 years we've been talking about it, but we won't be about it.
  6. Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty ; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that t he present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won.
  7. Has anybody here ever heard the Black National Anthem? The last line of the song is "Let us march on, 'till victory is won." Someone sent that to me in an e-mail today and the lyrics to the song look deeper than they ever did before.
  8. I couldn't donate because of the rules unfortuantely. Looking back I could've just given it to my wife to donate since she was nowhere near the max, but then again, Obama raised obscene amounts of money without me.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:05 AM) The most interesting line that I have seen so far is this from Phil Rosenthal on Facebook this morning... What if Peter Fitzgerald seeks re-election in 2004? Then Obama doesn't go for the vacant Senate seat. There are tons of what-ifs.
  10. QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 09:41 AM) I made a similar post in the Election Night Results thread, but I think it should have been made here. Congradulations to all you Obama backers and I really hope he proves you all right and becomes one of America's greatest presidents. Thank you YASNY. Had McCain won I would've done the same.
  11. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 09:01 AM) Congrats to those of you who this meant so much to. QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 09:33 AM) I did not support our new president elect, nor did I vote for him. That being said, now that he has been elected I personally hope he goes down in history as one of our greatest presidents. I'll even go so far as to congradulate all you happy Obama-ites out there. America spoke, I'll listen and I'll give the man a fair shot. Thanks a lot guys. Honestly. I'm wasn't a full-stop Obama supporter who agrees with everything he says and does nor am I an uber-liberal but I did support and vote for him, and it means a lot to see conservatives being gracious and giving him a fair shot even though I'm sure you guys, naturally, are upset your guy lost. For far too long we've been bitterly divided, it's a recent thing too. I hope we can bury it and start respectfully disagreeing in this country again. Some of my very good friends right now (to include my brother who I haven't called yet) are being bitter and obnoxious and it's starting to annoy me. One guy I had to flat-out ask if he believed in democracy or not.
  12. Also, IMO the first thing he will push is alternative energy, that's something there is a near-consensus on.
  13. I don't think his healthcare reform is going to pass as is even with a Dem Congress. If he learned from Clinton he's not going to push something controversial early in his term. He won't govern with some radical left-wing agenda (unless he's an idiot, and clearly he is not) because he is looking at 2 terms, and this is still fundamentally a center-right country.
  14. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:26 AM) Some of this is going to your heads. This is a mandate here and now, just like President Bush was a mandate back in 2000 with a Republican majority. These things go in cycles, so slow your roll. It's not that that I'm talking about. It's that the Republican party is in shambles at the moment. They have a lot of work to do.
  15. The Republican party is going to have to take a hard look at itself and wonder what it stands for. America's not happy.
  16. Can I get out my shovel to bury the Bradley Effect?
  17. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 12:35 AM) What do you mean in it's current form? QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 12:40 AM) The culture war + big spending + incredibly broad foreign policy This. Basically, the GOP clusterf*** that is going nowhere and getting owned by the Dems. It's time for the GOP to get a new leader of the Goldwater/Reagan variety and redefine its brand.
  18. Is it over the top to say that the conservative movement in its current form died in 2008?
  19. I fully agree with all the points in this post.
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 11:13 PM) Thank you. I sincerely mean that. QFT
  21. I can go back to liking McCain now. I don't think that the McCain we saw in the heat of the campaign is who he really was.
  22. Carlos Quentin for secretary of defense.
  23. I am off to DC to help Bush pack up his s*** and move out of the White House. Be back later.
  24. It's a very classy concession speech that comes across as genuine.
