QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 01:51 PM) I vote to merge Veterans Day and Memorial into a single observance on May and use the gap in November left behind by Veterans Day and make election day holiday. Veterans Day is Armistice Day from WWI, FWIW.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) Why do people get upset when courts try and allow people to get to vote? It seems ridiculous that voting hours are the same hours that people are expected to work and that employers are not required to allow their workers time off to vote. Now if Nov 2 was a holiday where there was no work, I could see the argument that they had plenty of time to vote. I was always under the assumption that they were, or at least they couldn't punish you for taking off to go vote. That's what I was told the first time I voted in 2000 (I was lucky, the year I turned 18 was a presidential election). At my current job, the time I'm gone isn't paid time, but they make sure to tell you they have no problems with you making arrangements. Maybe I've just had good luck and some really accomodating employers (not counting the time when I was overseas and had to have a hissy fit and write Sen. Durbin, those were different circumstances).

Ok so in that pic the headline is saying how she is criticizing Obama and Biden for "talking about the past" (read: very recent history, after the last presidential election). But I'd bet my mortgage that in that same speech/event/rally she brings up at the very least Ayers... from 40 years ago. Make up your mind, woman. Then again I shouldn't be surprised, these are the same people that say things like "Obama is an Arab" (as if that is some horrible thing) or "Obama is a Muslim" when at the same time they rip into him for going to Jeremiah Wright's church. It's got to be one or the other, guys.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 09:43 AM) Hannity calls himself a journalist. I was about to post that. Hannity uses an American flag as a shield against anyone who doesn't agree with his bulls***.

QUOTE (rangercal @ Oct 12, 2008 -> 05:40 PM) I realize Vash was out, Peanut was out (most of the game) and we were not generating pressure up the middle. But, s***! His scheme was exposed today, big time. I miss Ron Rivera. Ron Rivera wasn't that great of a coordinator either, he flat out did not generate any pressure when the D-line wasn't getting to the QB so Babich is no different. They are running the same exact defensive scheme, pretty much the same plays and everything. -
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) April 15th, good call lostfan. Haha, I think I can remember what the discussion was on when I said that, we were talking about 527s or something?

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 09:07 PM) The two republicans on CNN say it's a nonissue because people are more worried about the economy and she broke no laws, therefore it's ok. And they would be correct... which is why their equivalent strategy is not working and Obama is so far ahead in the polls.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 03:16 PM) I think it would be smart for people who want to vote, to just go to the appropriate government office, and register. I wouldn't trust some door-to-door vote registrar any more than I'd trust a door-to-door salesman. The first time I registered to vote was in 2000, I was 18, and there was a guy soliciting people to sign up outside my high school graduation on 70th and Michigan.

That's absolutely f***ing pathetic. Seriously. What's the question exactly?
-
I just forwarded some of these posts to a co-worker and we spent the last 20 minutes talking about it.

This line of questioning is based on the premise that Kap is pro-McCain, which he is not.

QUOTE (mreye @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) And what exactly are Conservatives "all about?" Are you asking me because you think I don't know, because you think I was trying to bait with that statement, or just out of curiosity to see what I'm going to say? They are "about" less government, as much free market as possible, lower taxes, lower government spending among other things, which may or may not be what the Republican party is about. Speaking of less government involvement I still haven't really figured out why social conservatives have so much influence among conservatives because it's basically the government telling people what to do and how to act. -

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 12:25 PM) Maybe if you had it blaring into your 'right' ear, you'd be voting for the better candidate in Nov. unflattering light for one party and not for the other, well then the arguement is legit. Actually it really wasn't until around that time when a good friend of mine actually sat me down and told me in a non-condescending way what conservatives are all about. Up to that point, I really didn't know, it's not really something that's taught in school. So what used to annoy me about Fox wasn't so much partisan politics and Democrat-bashing (although that was kind of annoying, for it to be so one-sided), it was stuff like O'Reilly bashing Ludacris when he clearly has no clue what he's talking about or Hannity making thinly veiled, borderline racist statements. I learned to tune all that out. -

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 11:03 AM) No idea who she is but I can gladly say I have never turned on Fox News in the 14 years I have had DirecTv. Not even by accident. About 5 years ago during the runup to the war, when the entire media was beating the war drums loudly (but especially Fox), it used to sit about 15 feet from my work station on a big-screen TV when I was deployed. Because I worked nights, that meant I would normally be watching prime-time, which meant a healthy dose of O'Reilly, Hannity, Cavuto (who isn't that bad), etc. This is mostly because people in the military are overwhelmingly Republican and couldn't stand CNN (even though they were pretty jingoistic too), and nobody wanted to watch BBC. Anyway my whole point in saying this is that I had no choice but to watch Fox because it was blaring into my left ear for almost a year, and I spent quite a bit of time admiring Laurie Dhue because she is possibly one of the hottest news anchors on TV. Well, was, she doesn't work for Fox anymore. -

There's a whole lot of stocks, too many for me to list. I'm not sure the exact number, or what they currently have. I know that in the last couple of reports they've sent, they've been basically saying they can't help the poor performance lately and that investors need to be patient, which I was thinking already, I'm just not sure how long it's going to take to ride out. Not that I'm particularly worried because none of this is anything I consider income, and anything I want to touch for at least about 20 years.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 10:47 AM) I'm not familiar with Weitz. What sectors or types are in the fund? domestic or foreign or both? small/growth firms, large value firms, or both? Just stocks, or does it include fixed income or other instruments? Or is it a sector fund (i.e. technology, energy, etc.)? Indicies? You're getting pretty close to the fringe of my knowledge here but they have a lot of different types of funds (these were given to me, BTW). I went to go dig up a report from earlier this year, and I'll give you the top 5 stocks and industry sectors: Stocks: Berkshire Hathaway 11% Liberty Media - Entertainment - 5.2% Redwood Trust 4.9% American International Group 4.7% (lol, yeah) Liberty Media - Interactive 4.7% Industry Sectors: Financials 31.5% Consumer Discretionary 30.8% Health Care 10.9% Industrials 6.5% Information Technology 3.8% This probably reads a lot easier to you than it does to me. I do know the "financials" part is getting raped right now though (that report is from 6 months ago).

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 10:20 AM) Which kind are you talking about here? Aggressive growth like Russell or small biz stuff? Commodity funds? The one with the most money in it is Weitz Funds. I forget the name of the other one, it's worth about 3k right now though.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 10:07 AM) And huge mutual fund redemptions. When are my high-risk mutual funds going to stop getting pounded? Another year or so?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 09:54 AM) There will be a lot of hedge funds and small trading firms going out of business in the coming months as a result of this mess. People will lose jobs. If walking around in Manhattan or downtown Chicago, watch for falling traders. In a way though, getting some of the highly risk tolerant players out of the markets may not be a bad thing. I'm going to put money into suicide hotlines, cashmere nooses, and Bluetooth-enabled coffins. That was horrible, I realize that I've just upgraded my ticket to hell to first-class.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 08:52 AM) Truth be told, I agree with that. I was just stirring the 'ol pot yesterday. It really pisses me off that the Republicans have been handed a chance on a gold platter to explain why they can help better then their (socialist) pals. But for whatever reason, they've just played dead, and all they want to do is fear monger. Guess what? It isn't going to work this election. Talk about why RSO will take away money from the economy as a whole and they win, but for some reason they can't do that, and it's sad. I know, you just like f***ing with people. You don't really count. Not really talking about this board per se, but like when I watch Palin speaking at rallies and I see the crowd shouting out random calls to violence, or begging John McCain to go even MORE negative, or desperately whining about the MSM to cover [insert obscure, irrelevant, previously unknown because nobody cares detail about Obama here]. Do they want to know why McCain is getting skull-raped in the polls right now? Because they're ignoring the economy, and focusing on s*** nobody cares about besides them.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 08:47 AM) Big drops at the open - major indices went down another 5 to 6% at one point. But now rallying, and majors are down 2 to 3% from open at present. I'm leaving work early to go to Wall Street to pass out bottles of Prozac to keep them from flipping the f*** out. It might save our economy. Anyone wanna come with?

I really was sort of apathetic about how the election would turn out despite who I was supporting, but in the past month or so, the way the Republican base has been acting, inspired by Sarah Palin, has really started making me feel spiteful, and I'd take some kind of pleasure in seeing them upset. It's not really a feeling I like, it's a polarized feeling I've managed to shake off a couple of years ago. But nothing pushes me away from the Republican party (who, truth be told, I have a lot in common with) better than the Republicans themselves.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 08:39 PM) I have no idea if they got the checks yet, or when they will. If anyone has a link that would be helpful. I'll try and find a link to what I was talking about for you, but this was something I heard on CNN. Balta's link covered it some though.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 08:31 PM) I don't really know what they could do. Another bailout? The first didn't work and neither will part II. The market actually went up when the bailout got shot down. IIRC the government hasn't cut anybody any checks, and won't do so for another few weeks.
