Follow this link and answer all the questions... you may have done something like this before, this one is pretty in-depth. The end result will give you a graph with 2 scores, because it separates authoritarianism and economic views (no gun control questions unfortunately). I'm very centrist either way, almost as close to the center of the graph as I can get. My economic score was 0.25... very slightly to the right. My social score was -1.13 meaning I am liberal, but slightly (if I took it again, I probably would come out a little more liberal). link: http://www.politicalcompass.org

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 09:02 PM) Well, the worry here for our side is frankly the "Soft bigotry of low expectations". Right now, after her performance against Couric and Gibson, if she comes out and speaks in clear, coherent, complete sentences, she'd outperform expectations by a lot and that would count as a positive for her. Quite literally, at this point, most people wouldn't be surprised if half her answers were total gibberish. That's an advantage for her because if she can be better than that, she can pull together some positive press. The question is...can she actually do better than how she's done the last couple times out, which have been unmitigated disasters? This is so true. My friend and I were talking about this yesterday and we were playing a game. I ask a reporter-style question, she replies with a Sarah Palin answer. So her answers would sound something like "Well, actually I am from Chicago, and when I go to the lakefront I can see Michigan from my house. Michigan borders Canada, which is basically Latin America, so along with my multicultural background and the fact that I have friends of different races, I believe my foreign policy credentials are strong. Also, we need to make sure we keep taxes low so people can afford healthcare." Her answer made slightly less sense than her actual answer in response to the bailout question.

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 08:25 PM) I have done a 180 on OC. I hated him the first few months but he has come around and I like what he said on the radio and in the papers. I first loved OC, then hated him after about a month and a half, then loved him when he heated up, then went back to hating him again. I'm just going to stick with hate for now.

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 08:20 PM) His trade value is severely diminished now. The book on Javy is open, he can't be counted on, he's a sub .500 pitcher career...at best we'll get either an aging veteran or a couple middling prospects. If we get ANYTHING close to a A prospect we'll be very lucky. He still is what he is even after his last 2 pathetic starts. Obviously nobody is going to give up an A+ prospect for him but something of value could be gotten for him at least. The problem is, who is going to step up and replace him? Pitchers don't just fall out of the sky. Hence me saying Javy still has value.

Good thing Javy has decent trade value. The above is not in green, because it's true.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 07:01 PM) So punish them because they are successful? Obama doesnt exactly live in a hut, he lives in a multimillion dollar mansion. The concept of "elitism" is the dumbest political profanity I've ever heard. It's just that it's even more ridiculous when rich people accuse somebody else of it. Like that billionaire Hillary supporter that doesn't like Obama because he's "elitist." LOL.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 05:44 PM) Gomez is 9 months older than Gordon Beckham. Compare him to an almost 30 Jerry Owens. Good example. You have the most accurate name on soxtalk. That is very original. You are the first person to ever think to say that. QUOTE (almagest @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 05:58 PM) Jerry Owens career minors (6 years): .291 .359 .359 (.718 OPS) 162 SB 66 CS (71%) Carlos Gomez career minors (4 years): .278 .336 .399 (.735 OPS) 141 SB 39 CS (78%) So Owens gets on base more and gets more hits, but Gomez has more power. a .017 point difference in OPS is basically nothing. Gomez is also a little better at stealing. But yeah, basically the same player. Also, Owens didn't start in Low A until he was 22, due to football. He's been a couple years behind the curve development-wise. Owens is also NOT "almost 30". He's 27. Gomez probably has a much higher ceiling due to his young age, but who knows if he'll reach it? If his attitude to this point ("The .660 OPS Superman") is any indication, he won't. And to say he and Owens are anything but almost the same player based on their careers to this point is silly. This about summarizes everything. Seriously... on paper, stat-wise, slice it any way you want but they are about 90% the same player. Literally the only major differences between them are a.) Gomez is 22, Owens is 27 and b.) Gomez is Hispanic, Owens is black. If you think Jerry Owens sucks, so does Carlos Gomez. If you think Carlos Gomez is the goods, so is Jerry Owens. Both of them should be 4th or 5th outfielders in the majors.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 04:33 PM) NO doubt about that. I turn it off when they start. For my money, I was impressed with the debate. Both of them are far and away better than their respective candidates of 4 and 8 years ago, it isn't even funny. It was a very intelligent debate by both. I was overseas during 2004 and missed those debates but I'm inclined to agree here.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 26, 2008 -> 11:49 PM) Jerry Owens couldn't hold Carlos Gomez's jock. Yeah, the difference in OPS during their time in the major leagues has been simply staggering. About 25 points, Gomez accomplishing that with a major assist from the Sox. Carlos Gomez sucks.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 12:14 AM) It amazes me how bad both VP candidates are. Palin is worse, but they both just completely suck. It has ruined whatever enthusiasm I had about the presidential candidates, because I question their decison making everytime I see their VP's. From a pure issues, knowledge, and depth standpoint, Biden >>>>>>>>>> Palin. Biden's negatives are mostly because he says really dumb things in public and doesn't think before he speaks. But hell, Bush is famous for that.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) I personally though he got slapped down after his Kissenger comments. He almost seemed scared when McCain jumped on him about it. He stuck to that one point too strong, but the point he made before that about all 5 secretaries of state plus the Bush administration more or less agreeing with him was a strong counter to McCain continuously trying to beat him over the head with the "you are naive" thing. After that it became semantics.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) and he did that by not talking about foreign policy Umm... what?
-
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 02:23 PM) Well, i do remember that, but I swear the last few weeks have had people believing that Obama would be lucky to find the podium in a debate, and if he just survuves, it would be a victory! That low of expectations I don't remember. I don't think it's so much that, but that foreign policy was McCain's strength, and Obama had his work cut out for him keeping pace.
-
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 02:18 PM) You know, i don't remember hearing too much about Obama being a weak debator until the last few weeks. Was that an intentional dumbing-down of the expectations by the Obama camp? It may have been said much earlier, but I really don't recall hearing that. I do recall hearing how Obama prefered the styles where he can use canned answers instead of having to talk off the cuff, but don't recall such low expectations about him. During the primaries the prevailing opinion was that Hillary was a stronger debater than Obama.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 02:30 PM) it didn't seem effective, was kind of like one of John Edwards 'mill worker' stories. The response was stupid, but it was appropriate to what it was responding to. Basically, Obama said "So? And?"
-
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) was pretty even. McCain maybe won, barely. the economic debate will be more important If you're scoring it on pure debate points, I think McCain probably won. McCain spent a lot of time on the offensive.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 02:54 AM) Weakest moment: Obama's "i have a bracelet too!" line. Really? Was that necessary? It was absolutely necessary. Republicans have this stupid strategy lately of pretending they have a monopoly on concern for the welfare of troops. Obama pulled out the bracelet and threw that argument in the trash.
-
Ok, I'm about done watching it. McCain pretty much talked down to Obama the whole time, he kept saying "what Obama doesn't seem to understand is..." but Obama held his ground, and got a couple good burns in there. Seems like a draw to me.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Sep 26, 2008 -> 08:57 PM) I'd trade a guy who be a middle relief guy in 2 years for a guy who is 22 and has all the potential in the world. Carlos Gomez's don't just come around every year in 3's or anything. We already have Carlos Gomez on this team, except he is a few years older and his name is actually Jerry Owens. Would you trade a Jerry Owens for a Bobby Jenks? I don't know what "world of potential" everyone is talking about by the way... he hit a pretty average .278 BA and an okay .336 in the minors. Didn't blow anybody away there. Dewayne Wise's numbers are just a couple shades below that.

This Couric interview doesn't seem to be getting much better for Palin.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 26, 2008 -> 08:08 PM) Seriously the first time I hear a Democrat on here say the McCain is better than Obama at anything, will be the first time. I'm not sure if you consider me a Democrat or not, but earlier I said something to the effect of McCain being better than Obama in unscripted town hall type settings. Which is why McCain does everything that way.
-
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 26, 2008 -> 10:56 PM) Just a funny bit of irony (?) Olbermann giving McCain crap because he had a mispronunciation of Imadinnerjacket, but no mention of Obama calling McCain 'Jack'. Dude. It's Keith Olbermann. Seriously. I think he beats off to video clips of Obama speeches at night.
-
Unfortunately I haven't watched it yet since I was at my mother in law's birthday party. I was told by my friend giving me text updates that nothing groundbreaking happened, and if you were a Republican you'll like McCain and think Obama is full of it and vice versa.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Sep 26, 2008 -> 01:34 PM) .384/.408/.616/1.024 in 73 AB vs the Sox .244/.285/.330/.615 in 491 AB vs everyone else So yeah, when he's not playing the Sox he kinda sucks at baseball. I thought it was .229 actually but then I realized that I was dividing by his PAs instead of his ABs. It still sucks though. I don't get why people think he's going to be good, because he was pretty average in the minors too.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Sep 26, 2008 -> 02:09 PM) I think you should play a drinking game. 1 drink everytime Obama says "Change." 3 everytime McCain says it. C'mon people, what else should we drink to? That would cause most people to black out and go to the hospital with alcohol poisoning.
