Media Bias: Perceived or Real? To what extent, and where?
lostfan replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 08:16 AM) I think this gets at one of the REAL problems in mainstream media, particularly TV media - the blending of commentary/editorial with news reporting. The two have become merged into one big mess. That allows for all sorts of bias from both sides or non-sides to leak into the "news". This is why TV news is nearly useless. Unfortunately, its where many Americans get their "news". Then there is the internet, where anyone can say anything and try to pass it off as fact. And then there is the whole time-shortening phenomenon, resulting in the information overload style of reporting. All flash, no substance. And this lends itself towards the usual suspects - sex, politics, scandal, controversy, death... IMO, you want a place where news is still news for the most part, go to the high end papers - NYT, WaPo, Trib, even WSJ for a certain segment. They still understand the difference between news and opinion. Read the NEWS. So considering all that, I think its tough to determine a left-right bias in the "MSM". Depends on who is in the MSM, and which outlet we are talking about. Also, are we talking commentators, or news anchors, or story selection, or what? And further, I think the media "bias" changes over time. It follows American angst, which right now is heavily against the GOP. I'd say the main TV news channels - CNN, MSNBC, and the big 3 - are probably, on a net basis, slightly left of center. Well-said. -

If we're going to disqualify commentators, well, then what are we talking about? Nothing? -

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 11:17 PM) I don't necessarily think that is always the case. However, I believe money can drive a network to an ideological base. FOX and MSNBC is a great examples of choosing a political direction for a network merely for ratings. That is true... but... the bottom line is still money here. MSNBC wouldn't have Keith Olbermann with his skirt and Obama '08 sweater on every night if there wasn't money in it for them. Fox, well, Fox wouldn't exist if they weren't trying to obviously play to a conservative market. -

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 10:35 PM) Pretty good speech brought up an important point, taxing business or erasing even more capital isn't going to help the economy. told McCain's story from Vietnam and tied it in to his political career nicely. even took a shot at the media not a policy speech by any means, which they really need to focus on. can't have too many speeches like that one. He started off ok then trailed off. I missed the last part and I'm gonna have to watch it again when I can fast-forward.

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 10:25 PM) I'm glad you said it. I'm about to pass out at the moment. He could be saying anything he wants because I'm not sure anyone's listening. I thought he was just going to hit the high points but he went into a full-blown narrative of the entire time.

I tried watching Fred Thompson's speech and I started nodding off. "John McCain was a POW blablahblabiityblahblah" ok Jesus Christ I know, I get it, I salute you Senator McCain but damn, there is plenty of other stuff to talk about.

What I know about Bristol Palin is that she is Sarah Palin's daughter, she is 5 months pregnant, and she is going to have the baby and marry the father. -
So... a little old lady goes into the doctor's office, and the doctor asks "What can I help you with?" The lady explains, "well, doctor, you see, I've had a really bad problem passing gas lately. It's been uncontrollable. But the odd thing is, while I can feel myself passing gas, they make no sound, nor do they have any odor. In fact, I've probably farted about 20 times since I've been sitting in this office. Is there anything you can do to help?" "Sure," the doctor said, as he writes her a prescription. "Take these pills twice a day, and come see me again in about 10 days." So the 10 days go by, and the lady comes back for her appointment. "Did the medicine work?" asked the doctor. "Well... you see, it seems to have gotten worse. I'm passing gas at about the same rate... but while they are still silent, they now smell absolutely terrible." The doctor nodded. "Good. Now that we've got your sense of smell back in working order, let's work on your hearing."

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 06:45 PM) There is no such thing as a complete unbiased news source. But what you believe is fair journalism (pro-right) and what I believe is fair journalism (call it as is) are two different things. He admits sources that are biased to the right though.
-
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 06:43 PM) Honestly, there really is no convincing you of any bias, so as far as you are concerned nothing could ever be proven as far as a media bias. You think the NY Times is a complete unbiased news source. I'm not trying to insult you, I just think you have a very skewed view of what is appropriate or fair journalism. but I will spare you any further posts on the media for a while, as i understand it is pissing people off and getting very redundant. My whole problem with the "liberal media" thing is that it's mostly true, but the card gets played far too often to the point where the words have no meaning anymore. People throw out accusations of bias and conspiracy when they sometimes just aren't there.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 06:33 PM) It's actually pretty shocking that Obama only has this amount of scandal seeing that he's a Chicago politician. I do believe that Barack is a man of farily high character. Most politicians are going to have some shady connections ... warning, snarky comment, read at your own risk : ... but I do understand what Drunkbomber is getting at with his argument and I agree with him. Imagine if Daley was running for president. lolz.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 06:11 PM) I dunno. I think theres a lot more there and Im surprised not much is known about it. This is only from Wiki but it has some very interesting tidbits : Antoin "Tony" Rezko (born 1955 in Aleppo, Syria) is an American political fundraiser, restaurateur, and real estate developer in Chicago, Illinois convicted on several counts of fraud and bribery in 2008. Rezko has been involved in fundraising for local Illinois Democratic and Republican politicians since the 1980s. He focused primarily on Chicago-area Democrats; for example, Rezko was one of Barack Obama's first major financial contributors. After becoming a major contributor to Rod Blagojevich's successful gubernatorial election, Rezko assisted Blagojevich in setting up the state's first Democratic administration in 20 years. Rezko was able to have business associates appointed onto several state boards. Rezko and several others were indicted on federal charges in October 2006, for using their connections to the state boards to demand kickbacks from businesses that wanted to do business with the state. While the others plead guilty to the charges, Rezko pled not guilty and was found guilty of 16 of the 24 charges filed against him. So, Obama got his house at a huge discount while Rezco bought the land for full price, and then Rezco sold Obama some of the land and were to think a guy like Rezco did this out of the goodness of his heart? It was proven that Rezco had "business associates" appointed onto state boards because of his "fundraising" and were to think that he got nothing in return from Obama? Is this the "change" we can expect, because all it seems to me is more of the same. I know Im biased and/or wrong about a lot of things but there is no way that anyone can believe something really shady was going on here. Well yeah, it was shady. Obama apparently never actually did anything illegal or below-board, and nothing came out from Rezko about Obama during the trial (but damn did Blago ever look like s*** after that), but Obama did acknowledge he made a mistake and that he should've known better. That's about all we know for now. But I mean, frankly, with politicians these kinds of associations are a dime a dozen, and I would believe that literally everyone has a shady association somewhere, even the "clean" ones.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 04:56 PM) Thanks for posting that. Ive never seen those interviews, which is actually still kind of my point. Im surprised those stories didnt get more attention. However, what I gather from the interview is that the corruption in the transaction that people like me suspected absolutely happened. Its kind of bothersome to think he is basically admitting to getting into shady business transactions with a convicted felon and that not only did it not gain national attention, but that nobody seems to care. Is this honestly less of a deal than Palins husband getting a DUI 20 years ago or the personal life of her daughter, becuase I know everybody knows about that stuff. The story kind of started to die off after those stories came out, because once the extent of it became known, there wasn't that much else to speculate about.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 04:56 PM) Have the words "Mainstream Media" become cliched yet? If not, when will they? Seriously, everybody b****es constantly about the media this and the media that. Unless they are blatantly irresponsible just the shut the hell up about it. That was a little unnecessary.

Here's the clip that got them riled up. There was nothing unreasonable about the questions she was asking, it's just that the full answer would've been in the negative and he was trying to tapdance, and she kept calling him out on it. I guess he did a good job of keeping his temper though.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 03:03 PM) http://levijohnston.com/Blog/disclosure/ This reminds me of a Myspace bulletin my friend forwarded where Obama was supposedly talking about how he wouldn't say the Pledge because in some places of the world people view America as oppressive, or something or other. Words lifted directly off a satire site and he just assumed it was true and pushed it on up.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) Is this comparable to being a member of a black nationalist church for 20 years? I've said this before, but I know people that go to that church, and it's just like any other church, and the general perception of it is ridiculously distorted. People talk about "Black Liberation Theology" because it sounds really confrontational and controversial, but 90% of the people that bring that up I can guarantee have no idea what they're talking about.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 01:25 PM) Can I ask what crimes Ayers has been convicted of? That's kind of irrelevant, because the government f***ed up the case and the evidence was inadmissible.
