  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 03:21 PM) I'm not suggesting we send Thome when he is going to be out by 30 feet as he was the other day. But with players like OC, CQ, Alexei, Brian, Wise, etc., who have decent speed, I am tired of seeing him hold runners. It has happened several times where a player has run through a sign (twice by OC), or the hitter is looking to advance another base but cannot because Cox has clogged up the basepaths by holding the runner at 3rd (as is the case yesterday). I honestly believe we have left more runs out there by not running guys than we have picked up by holding them. And Cora left runs in the form of outs, from doing things like waving Paul Konerko around on a shallow single to left. Which is much worse. If Cora found a way to get a guy tagged out on a home run trot, he would do it.
  2. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 02:49 PM) which is dumb because i think it should be the most valuable player (which is why its obviously called mvp)and not the best player of the leauge. that being said, i think itll be quentin or morneau, depending on who wins the division To me the best player in the league *is* the most valuable player, by defintion. What team said player happens to be on is happenstance. Otherwise that would automatically disqualify every player in the league who doesn't make the playoffs which to me is dumb. CQ fits both definitions though so it's moot in this case.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 11:47 AM) I'd like to agree...but the other side of the issue is...by helping her husband campaign, she made her business and her family's private matters public. I just keep coming back to the thought...let's say he won Iowa and turned that in to a juggernaut somehow (He was only a few votes behind there). Then you get to July, and suddenly the affair comes pouring out. If she believed one bit in all the things she supposedly supports...then by standing by and campaigning hard for her husband while he kept that secret, she'd basically be handing John McCain the White House. If she wanted to keep her family's private dealings private...then she shouldn't have let her husband run for public office. Ultimately, it's her husband's fault.
  4. Isn't it really up to her how she handles it once she finds out though? If she wants to stay silent, it's her marriage and her business.
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:37 AM) The ball Konerko hit was an absolute rocket right at the LF'er. There was no way to score that run unless there was a bad throw or hop (which we were lucky enough to get). Cox is actually extremely conservative...I miss having Joey over there... And I miss having Darin Erstad bat leadoff.
  6. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 11:52 AM) Most people hadn't really seen a full Michelle Obama speech until last night though, so I think it was very important for her to do well and come across the way she does in most speeches and she certainly hit the proverbial home run. I agree. She was a really effective campaign asset until then., and then the Jeremiah Wright thing broke out not too long after that so she started laying low.
  7. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:45 AM) I was underwhelmed with Kennedy's speech. It was a nice touch to have him there, but he went to the Mario Cuomo democratic cliche book. On the other hand, I was VERY impressed with Michelle Obama's speech. I never really thought she was some sort of angry black woman or militant or whatever (she just seems like your typical lifelong Chicagoan with an attitude to me, and that's fine, I could be described as that), but last night was a job well done by her. She came across as very likeable and real, and it was honestly more impressive to me than any speech even her husband has done. All of her speeches are like that. Almost all of the negative perceptions of her are based on that "proud of my country" gaffe.
  8. If Cox was fired who would be the 3rd base coach then? Cora? Oh f*** no.
  9. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:01 AM) There's more sources of the income to make revenues higher. With that said, these dumbasses (my biggest beef with the GOP and their lack of control) need to stop spending so much. Period. It's a fraction of what it would otherwise be. But anyway taxes wouldn't be such a big deal if the spending wasn't crazy out of control.
  10. Simply put, you need a certain amount of revenue if you want a fully functional government that lives up to its expectations. The money doesn't come out of thin air... and while I agree with the general idea that more money to invest leads to jobs I have to start laughing when I hear people claim that increases federal revenue. That makes about as much sense as me quitting my job for one where I work less and make half what I do now, and then saying it's easier for me to pay my bills.
  11. Couch also didn't bust all by himself, the Browns pretty much put on a clinic on how to mishandle the career of a young quarterback.
  12. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 08:53 AM) Americans don't want big brother government telling them how or what to do These days that concept is associated with liberals. I'm not sure how or why. It's supposed to be a conservative "limited government power" ideal and originally was but at some point the Democrats picked it up and started hollering about protecting civil liberties, many Republicans are still with them on it though.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 08:39 AM) He is one of those guys who became "conserative" over night. He was fairly centrist when he was the governor of a liberal NE state, but when he wanted to go national he sold all of that out. I hate that. It was the same problem I had with John Edwards, except he went the other way on the scale. Its too bad, because Mitt't economic and financial credentials are second to none in the field, but his lack of spine is also second only to Edwards. He seemed to me to be a solid candidate who just came across as a slimeball, and turned me off.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 09:16 AM) I agree with you. He came off like a pouty brat in his concession. Actually it reminds me a lot of Hillary's concession. They both sounded resentful that they had to do it. What exactly didn't you like about Romney? I wasn't active on here back then.
  15. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 09:09 AM) We should sign him to a minor league deal. He would be one of our top prospects. I knew that if i didn't make this post, someone else would
  16. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 05:04 AM) Move him up and let him play in the next age group? Yeah that would be the most logical step, that's what they did to Bo Jackson when he was a kid. The fact that they're making such a drama out of this leads me to believe there is some other reason they're doing it. Furthermore 40 mph isn't even that fast for Little League, at all, so I don't even get what the big deal is. That is actually about the speed of my normal throws with no windup, even with my f***ed up shoulder. When I was in Little League, the other team (the White Sox) had a kid named Scott who threw 50+ (timed on the radar when he went to a Sox game), and I never hit off him. I believe Scott was 10 at the time. The next year we had a 12 year old on our team named Anthony who threw even harder than Scott, in the mid to high 50s. These guys weren't even anything special, every Little League is going to have these guys.
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 10:33 PM) Seriously? I thought his speech was awful. It was full of every conservative's stereotypical/ shallow/ dumb criticisms of liberals. It was so over the top and corny. Then again, maybe that would have won the nomination... If you're speaking to Republicans then it makes no difference. That's how you'd rally your base. The "surrender to terror" line was over the top for me though.
  18. Oh, away from I see. You're probably right.
  19. QUOTE (Steff @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 04:25 PM) Unless they can somehow eliminate any doubt about drug use, find a way for all the games to be played in the exact abount of time, get Europe to ease up on their assholish behavior towards the US love of the game, and by far the most important to the IOC, get the pro's to play... baseball will not likely return in 2016. Rogge did an interview with Costas and said the list (though he wouldn't say what they were) of sports competing for the 2 open spots have "great potential". He hates baseball and has openly expressed that he's thrilled it's gone. We should put in more obscure sports that China can select people to train and get cheap gold medals in so they can use their medal count for better propaganda value.
  20. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 12:21 PM) Well, you did say 'if you asked your average Russian'. I understand the point as it relates to government. And I in no way mean to imply that the few people I know translate to a whole population. It was funny to listen to them talk about the 80's, as they were in thier teens and alternatly scared to death from their propaganda media, and excited about America from the snippets they got from people who went there like music, clothes and stories. A funny story, although not funny at the time, I used to collect stamps, especially Russian stamps. One day when I was 10, I wrote a letter to the Russian Embassy in DC asking if they know of any places that I could get Russian stamps from in the midwest. I got a nice letter back thanking me for my interest in their stamps, along with about a dozen stamps and a list of 2 places I could possibly get stamps from. A week later some nice guys in black suits showed up at my dad's work asking all sorts of questions, and showed up at my school. Although they never talked to me, they did talk to my teacher and principal. My dad didn't like me much for a few weeks after that. My teacher even longer. Maybe that is why I have been audited 3 times so far? Hmmm. That was just a poor choice of words on my part. That story is hilarious though. When was this, the 80s? Do you still have the stamps at least? If I did that I'd probably get fired immediately... even if what I was doing was something totally innocent like collecting stamps they'd just fire me because of where I work and because I really should know better.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 05:43 PM) Slightly OT...when is the last time someone didn't come out looking better after a concession speech than they did before? I can't figure the direction of your post here... are you pushing to or away from my post?
  22. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 04:47 PM) Mitt Romney about makes me want to puke. You know, I watched his concession speech. He did a complete 180 from how he conducted his campaign. If he had not acted like such a self-serving slimeball he could've won the nomination.
  23. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) I think the tactic of telling Hillary voters " You are idiots. We hate you. Now do what we say." is failing miserably. Go figure, they don't like the snark and personal attacks which have been directed towards them and their candidate. I'm not surprised some of them holding out before they make a decision whom they are going to vote for in November. My feelings towards THEM are based entirely off of their actions.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 12:04 PM) Its why I couldn't ever see myself voting for a Democratic President. No matter what I think of the person, they still stand for just about everything I don't believe in. In the end of the game, I want the person in the Oval Office who I most closely identify with, even if they aren't my ideal candidate. Right and I understand that completely and all the Obama stuff aside, I understand why you'd vote for McCain even though I know you don't really like him. If you don't agree with somebody on basic ideologies why would you vote for them? It makes no sense. You may get into academic arguments on why to align with that ideology like we do here, but if you're rigid on all those things, unless the guy from your party is a criminal or something, then that's who you should vote for... although people are still free to do whatever they want with their vote. I'm sure most here have figured out that I don't agree with the Democrats on a lot of things and that I lean towards Democrats... I would vote Republican if I saw a guy I liked though. But I would never vote for a far right Republican.
