QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 10:12 AM) Agreed, no matter what when you are in the playoffs you are playing playoff quality teams. Lining up Angels before Tampa or Tampa before Angels really doesnt matter It would be kind of cool if the Twins and White Sox both made the playoffs and ended up facing each other in the ALCS. Right and if we lose, it doesn't matter what round we lose in. Could be the first round, could be the World Series. There are really only 3 tiers of success in baseball IMO: Missing the playoffs - doesn't matter if you are the 5th team that just missed, or finish in last in your division, you still miss the opportunity to compete at the next level Making the playoffs - unless you are just that dominant and heavily favored, the odds of beating the other 3 teams are a wash and it's a crapshoot Winning the World Series - self-expanatory, and once you've done it, there is nothing else to say Whatever happens between those tiers is irrelevant.

QUOTE (TCQ @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 08:57 AM) I would not be very comfortable with winnning the wild card. If we do we probably play the angels in the first round which would be a lot tougher than playin the rays. I know the rays are doing so well but with the injuries and all id rather face them even if we had to play the first two in tampa. If we win the first round and have to play them in the ALCS (assuming they win, but who knows with baseball), what's the difference really?

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 09:02 AM) Anyone know what Lexi's english is like? Does he even speak English? I assumed he didn't. I make the same assumption for every Latin American player until I see them interview in English.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 04:42 AM) Uribe is a different story. I imagine the organization wants him back next year as a reserve infielder (because he's one of the best reserve infielders in the league), but I don't know why Juan wouldn't want to go looking for a starting job elsewhere. I'd actually bet more money on Uribe signing a multi-year deal with the Sox than him signing somewhere else, but one organization that does like him and would appreciate what he brings and perhaps bring out some of the talent is Boston. If Boston could find a taker for Lugo, I think Uribe would have his starting job locked up there. So I really am not sure if they'll offer him arbitration, but if they can't lock him up to a deal prior to, I imagine they will...he's valuable enough off the bench that he's worth $4.5 or so. I'm thinking of a scenario similar to Ayanbadejo for the Bears. With him, he was one of the best ST players in the league, and the Bears could have re-signed him. But it wasn't all about money to him, he wanted to play more defense, and he wouldn't have had an opportunity to do that with the Bears, and said he chose the Ravens because they promised him some snaps at LB. I get the feeling Uribe might be thinking that too if he chooses a multi-year deal somewhere - there is not much urgency from the Sox end to put him back in as the starter since he has been pretty lackluster for an extended period of time when he's been the uncontested starter, for whatever reason.

Looks like Kenny knew what he was doing once again.....

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 09:26 PM) No. He went down because he just pitched and was going to be unavailable for 5 days. By sending him down and bringing up another AAA pitcher we had more depth in our bullpen. It's the exact same strategy the club executed after Broadway's start. It's good roster management if you have the arms in the minors to do it. If Richard had pitched like he did tonight - that is to say, lights out - instead of imploding like he did before being sent down do you think they would have bothered sending him back to Charlotte and calling up Broadway? I don't. I think it would've been overly optimistic to expect Richard to shut Seattle down the way he did after the big innings he gave up a few weeks ago, and the strategy of trading arms would never have happened if Richard had been better from the start. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 11:54 PM) I think KW simply made a calculation that it wasn't worth trading someone like Poreda for a pretty minimal return of 6-7 starts down the stretch. If they didn't have those conveniently placed off-days, I think there would have been really no choice but to make a move...as giving up (possibly) four more games would have been a bigger difference in the final standings. Yes. This is what I'm saying. -

QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 10:13 PM) Other than the fact that Richard's second and third starts were basically forfeits? Right. Unless I'm totally misunderstanding what Kenny and Ozzie were doing, Richard went back to AAA not to bring up Broadway, but because he was horrible and unready. I don't think anybody expected 6 shutout innings, even against a garbage squad like Seattle. -

If Kenny had better bullets I'm pretty sure he still would've made a move. This has mostly just been luck I think, it wasn't his Plan A. Or even his Plan B. -
QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 01:31 PM) Let's bring up Charlie Haeger to start against him. (I'm kidding.) But that would be interesting. I wonder when the last time was that two knuckleballers started against each other in a game. Starting, I don't know, but I do recall Haeger coming on against Wakefield last year. I forgot who started that game.

QUOTE (SpringfieldFan @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 05:20 PM) How about an RBI efficiency stat where you divide a players RBI by the number of players (plus the batter himself) who did not score on his at bat? For example, if a hitter hits a two run home run and then strikes out with the bases loaded, his RBI efficiency would be 2/4, or 0.500. I wish there were a way to look up each player's season LOB. If there were I would love to calculate this. SFF That's not a bad idea but I think that's bordering on too many numbers. There is already OPS with RISP which gives you a pretty good idea of how effective a guy is with runners on base.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) hey man, no one ever said being a true patriot doesn't come with a cost (possible radiation poisoning). I'll just pay a neighbor to store it then. It's the American way.
-
I've always wanted to own a ICBM with a strategic nuclear warhead. Can I buy one of those at Wal-Mart? That would be pretty bad ass. Well except for the part about getting radiation poisoning and all that. But damn, talk about home self-defense.

QUOTE (knightd1 @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 05:04 PM) I should post more. Maybe. I'm just saying that everybody on this site gets that reference apparently, and even more than we thought. Seriesly.

QUOTE (thedoctor @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 04:52 PM) i love the fact that "seriesly" has joined the soxtalk lexicon. that in and of itself is evidence that the world of soxtalk is thriving and vibrant. From a guy with 25 posts no less.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,403982,00.html lol. Ok so nobody really knows what this guy was up to, but if we are to assume he was planning on doing something bad with it, let's just say it didn't go as he planned... haha when he tested his materials it turns out it worked better than he expected, apparently:

Yeah that's my point. Stuff has obviously changed since then so we can't go back and go talking about who talked to whom.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 01:47 PM) Right, I understand that. I do think, though, that there are common themes that run across that part of the world. I also realize that at the time AQ was forming, Iraq was an "ally" for trying to beat up Iran. That's a slippery slope though. If you go back that far, you know what other country bin Laden was allied with? Does that alliance have anything to do with today? Not so much. The Cold War was a mess and a lot of what we did back then has backfired since. Iran, as an example.

In modern baseball, RBI is not and should not be a significant offensive category used as a metric for measuring players. There is only one way to guarantee yourself an RBI after an at-bat, and guess who leads in that category?
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) MAYBE. No one knows, on either side. But, I do think that they both agree that the US doesn't need to be over there, and I'm sure there's money trails around. The former is true no doubt, the latter may or may not be true since it gets pretty far down into the weeds and in any case does not represent any official position of anybody if it does.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 10:44 AM) Well Iran and Iraq are Shia, and Bin Ladin is Sunni, right? Nonetheless, they do have a common enemy... and I have a feeling the money networks tend to run together, sects be darned. Saddam was Sunni, but secular, and therefore an apostate regime by Bin Laden's standards. He pretty much felt the same about them as he felt about the Soviets.

You guys do realize you're essentially telling a doctor how to operate, right? This is the equivalent of me trying to school SS2K or NSS on some financial matters, or someone else trying to school Balta about science. I don't make statements like the one I made above out of political bias, I state them because they're facts (and there is also a line I can't cross).
