  1. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 11:03 AM) Politics at it's finest.... Party First IMO nobody is going to compromise until the election season is over.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 09:59 AM) Someone please explain who "RSO" is. I mean, contextually, I figured it was Obama. But what does that stand for? Rock Star Obama - he coined it a few posts ago and started short-titling it
  3. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 09:49 AM) Really? He's the worst president in history, why? Iraq? That's laughable. The environment? Really? Iraq is laughable? Please explain. That was probably the worst strategic decision made by any world power in the last 30 years. Well, it's on par with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, not to mention the horrendous mishandling of intelligence that led up to it. My current position on the war is that all of this is irrelevant right now, and that we've made that bed and we have to sleep in that. But this doesn't mean a favorable end, assuming we get there, will justify the means.
  4. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 09:35 AM) The difference between RSO and Reagan is light years different. RSO has to keep reminding us about how bad everything is and he's going to fix it all for us. Reagan told us that WE the people should be the example, not our government. I'm not trying to compare Reagan to Obama, that's just silly, I don't know where you drew that assumption. I think you misinterpret Obama's general message. He talks about leadership (and yeah duh he is going to be that leader if he gets elected) and also talks about what he thinks the government should do (too much, IMO) but he talks about what "we" have to do "together" and he does talk a lot about individual responsibilies and obligations. I guess that can be interpreted as some kind of socialist mentality, having the society come together for a greater purpose, although I don't really know why. Conservatives actually say the same thing but in a different tone and from a different angle. All the rest of what Obama says, about complaining about where the country's been going, is just campaign talk to get elected.
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 09:20 AM) The whole point is that a large number of people that will vote for McCain know equally as little about him. So what else is new? This happens all the time. Right. Nothing new. Move along. In fact, if looking at the polls tells me anything, it's that the average American voter hardly even pays attention to politics and mostly just associates things along a general liberal or conservative mindset, and takes things mostly at face value. People who pay attention to things like this, to include the reporters and talking heads on TV who overanalyze these things, assume everyone else is like them, and knows what they know. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 09:21 AM) No they won't. The "feel good" exposure is on RSO, not McCain. How is this a "fault" of Obama's? Do you want him to stop being charismatic? Ok, so he has a tendency to hypnotize voters, which you may find creepy and automatically associate with some historical tyrants and dictators who ran cults of personality. Ok. But whenever I find people bringing this up they always ignore the fact that people like Reagan, Kennedy, Churchill, Roosevelt etc. also had this quality. So in and of itself, being a charismatic figure/great public speaker doesn't mean jack diddly.
  6. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 08:51 AM) But some of the minor league guys are on team's 40 man rosters? I gues i dont completely get it I'm actually not completely sure either. I'm going to check the rules.
  7. QUOTE (forrestg @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 07:24 AM) Isn't our Olympic basketball players professional do they not get paid? Why are our baseball players singled out? An Olympic basketball player doesn't interfere with the NBA season. For baseball, the Olympics fall right in pro baseball's prime time. So you have to miss time you're otherwise getting paid by a pro baseball for in order to play in the Olympics.
  8. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 11:55 PM) What a douche. Chad Johnson may legally change his last name to "OchoCinco" so he can have it on the back of his jersey. I think "Overrated" would fit better. Chad Johnson is "rated" as one of the best WRs in the NFL, and he is, in fact, one of the best WRs in the NFL. How is he overrated? He's an egotistical loudmouth, I give you that, but most of what he does is all in good fun (saying he's going to punch Ray Lewis in the mouth, talking trash after beating a horse in a race, etc).
  9. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 08:13 AM) Briggs I will give you, Urlacher shouldnt have to have his baby mamma drama posted all over the front page. Thats low grade journalism. Divorces and custody cases arent anyones business but the parties involved, and Urlachers kids mom is quite the glamor hungry gold digger I'm going to second this... Briggs is a s***head of a person. Urlacher, contract squabble aside, is mostly a stand-up guy who doesn't react well to the harsh media spotlight getting into his personal life. Plus his baby's mama is a certified crazy b****, and we really shouldn't be ripping on him for that.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 07:44 AM) Ummmm...no. Not until he has a stretch where he beats 2-3 above .500 teams consecutively (something like Floyd and Buehrle are much more capable of doing, although Gavin's been fading, despite the win total...heck, Adam Russell is 4-0) He's the pitching version of Thome (to many Sox fans)...great stats and looks good on paper...but sometimes he comes up short when we really need the big hit or clutch start against the best teams in baseball. Jim Thome has been the fire for about 2 solid months now and since June has been as big of a part of this offense as anyone, to include Carlos Quentin. And in any case, I don't see how his .887 OPS is comparable to Javy's very average 4.50 ERA.
  11. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 12:55 AM) Yup, that's my ENTIRE reason for not voting for Rock Star Obama. Sadly, though, there will be a few people like that... and even sadder, most don't know why they ARE voting for him, other then he'll "CHANGE" things. I for one, don't want a hell of a lot of change, but apparently, most want "change" (i.e. government running everything for me since I am not smart enough to do anything for myself). I don't know why you assumed that was directed at you - I think most of the regular posters here know your position/reasons for not liking Obama. Actually, I think saying "most" Obama voters not knowing why they're voting for him is a pretty ignorant statement. If you were to ask a politically literate person why they were voting for him in a non-confrontational tone I'm sure they could tell you, and justify it, even if you won't agree with their reasons (this is the whole point of elections). If you're talking about the politically illiterate or apathetic, that's another matter entirely, and it shouldn't surprise you. The ones who tend to vote Republican, or not vote at all, are exactly the same.
  12. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 02:34 AM) I've never heard anyone use 'bustdown'. I'm not even sure I get it. Are you from the south side? It might just be outdated and one of those temporary fad-type words, but it was in heavy use a couple years ago.
  13. QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 09:12 PM) nice. i'm watching on a gamecast, what kind of pitch was getz' hit on? Fastball
  14. 1 MLB at-bat, 1 HIT for Chris Getz. And an RBI to boot.
  15. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 07:34 PM) When Carlos gets hit, the ball gets hurt. True... plus, the ball doesn't hit Carlos, he hits the ball. With or without his bat.
  16. You know, I have a lot of respect for MLB hitters who just shrug off getting hit and take their base as if nothing happened... that mess hurts. It's bad enough to be talking 75, 80, but when we're talking about over 90, that's gotta hurt pretty bad.
  17. QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 07:29 PM) The U.S. companies that dodge paying federal income taxes are guilty of treason in my view. That's a pretty BearSox-esque statement there.
  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 07:26 PM) Give it a few years and Cook County will be at 17%! Haha, no s***.
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 06:55 PM) I think some of the core ideas of the "Fair Tax" actually make a lot of sense, but, its got some huge flaws too. In theory. It's got some gaping holes in it though. Plus they talk about setting it at 17% which I just don't think is realistic, especially considering the massive dropoff in revenue from the top.
  20. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 06:16 PM) R-E-G-R-E-S-S-I-V-E = does not work. Actually I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not here but I agree, I think. The fair tax sounds like a really good idea on paper, but in practice it amounts to raising taxes on most people, and the more money you make, the less of your income gets taxed since rich people don't spend 100% of their income. Hell, I'm not even close to rich, and *I* don't spend 100% of my income.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 04:04 PM) Basically. Figure he'd be one of those guys that keeps missing time here and there because of injuries and doesn't get a good rhythm going. Thought he'd be our Rocco Baldelli. Ah. That's the only reason I can think of for someone to doubt his ability, because when he was healthy he was always projected to be a monster. I knew it would be a good, underrated (at the time) pickup and the textbook definition of buying low, but I didn't know he would actually be an immediate MVP contender. I don't think anyone did.
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 04:38 PM) I thought Quentin would be #7 type hitter hitting in the .250s with marginal power. I also thought our pitching would be in the bottom third in the league. Did you think his shoulder injury would cause him to never recover or something?
  23. Does anybody here call an "easy" girl (you know what I mean) a "bustdown"? (I have never heard a white person say that btw besides ones that hang around blacks/hispanics a lot and I would be surprised if someone did) Also my wife makes fun of me for how I say "roots" and "roof." I don't pronounce the "oo" sound (as in how you'd hear it in "tools" or "boobs"), I say it almost like a "uh" sound. But for some reason it depends on the context of "roots," if I'm talking about a plant I say it that way, but I say it the other way if I'm talking about family, or the "root of the problem."
  24. The thing about windfall profits tax that makes it dumb is the fact that CRUDE is what's higher, and the oil companies have to pay that higher price. So there is no windfall profit to tax, although it seems like it. If anybody needs to pay a windfall profits tax it's Saudi Arabia, Iran, Venezuela, Nigeria etc.
  25. QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) Broad stroke comment. In nature a "company" doesn't exist. It does not eat, sleep, drink, crap, or reproduce. A nation is made up of people, not "companies". Why don't we actually tax people and not things? A corporation (not company) is recognized as its own entity that pays taxes so the individuals running it are protected from liability, the corporation assumes all the liability (that's a quick, down and dirty definition)
