Suskind:White House ordered CIA to back-dated letter
lostfan replied to FlaSoxxJim's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:49 AM) I believe the BBC calls their TV reporters "presenters" because all they do is present the news. But then again, what they do isn't "lazy" because they're working twelve hours a day at the station. "Journalists," however, are not "lazy" by any stretch. This depends on what group you're talking about though. The word "lazy" probably refers to banking on irrelevant details like national polls and overanalyzing them instead of going after what actually matters, or doing things like parroting Hillary's stupid "popular vote" arguments and giving them unnecessary credibility. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:46 AM) but some anchors call themselves journalists when really they just re-write stories from newspapers. There are TV Journalists, Carol Marin still has admiration from me. Great piece on Blago last night from her. There are good TV journalists, yeah. It's just hard not to talk in sweeping generalizations though. I'm mainly talking about the people who have their hour-long soapboxes on cable news (O'Reilly, Hannity, Matthews, Olbermann). They're good for entertainment IMO but little else. I know I've said this a lot on this board but I just think it bears repeating. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:42 PM) TV broadcasters in a lot of cases should have the title "journalist" removed from them. So many of them are lazy asses that think they rule the world just because they are on T.V. Personality journalists. Basically, they are the root, stem, and leaf of why everybody is so cynical about the media anymore. -
NFL releases new code of conduct for fans
lostfan replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I know that Saints fans were all pissy about getting harassed during the NFC Championship, and they were acting like this was something unique to Chicago. lol it's a NFL game in the playoffs, in one of the more rabid football cities in the country, and people are drinking beer, what do you expect? Would it be different for a Bears fan at a Saints home playoff game? Not really. -
NFL releases new code of conduct for fans

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:36 PM) The last two rules involving not listening to stadium personnel and harrassing opposing fans are very enforceable. I think you might be right about the rest of them though, because you'd seriously have to kick out half the stadium at ALL NFL games if you can't get drunk and stupid and use bad language. That's mostly what I was referring to. Also, to be perfectly honest, I expect a certain amount of harassment when I go to my teams' away games. That's just part of going. As long as it doesn't get out of hand... touch me, or anything on my body, or throw anything at me, and I'm gonna want to beat the s*** out of you. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) His defense? He literally allowed a triple yesterday because he couldn't bend over. His defense is going to be atrocious. And he offers only the occasional homer. I'm not talking about his fielding, yes it is terrible. Hell I would rather have Quentin in CF than Griffey. This is someting I never thought I'd be saying btw, especially 10 years ago considering Griffey was basically Willie Mays in CF.

Much of this is unenforceable. It's just a bunch of PR posturing. -
QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 10:54 AM) Uribe is very valuable as a utility man. I don't want him starting, but he has a place in MLB and I wouldn't mind it if he stayed with the Sox. I'm ok with him as a utility guy. In fact, I really like him there better than anybody in recent memory. I just get upset when he's starting 5 times a week because he sucks.

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:22 AM) Well I remember in the past he has certainly hit better against RHP. Right now with Griffey and Swisher on the team, his role should be as a late inning defensive replacement, and the occasional start here and there. Swisher may have had a bad year, but he has 16HR's now and a fairly decent OBP, so he'll still offer you something on that front. And I mean Griffey had been swinging the bat well in his 1st couple of games for us. I can't really see the harm of seeing if that would continue for 1 game at home no matter what type of pitcher he was facing. Junior is batting .308 for the Sox right now, all singles, albeit only in a handful of games. No reason really to trash him right now.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:06 PM) So, how exactly do you plan to pull off this drilling without f***ing up the environment? The areas that are the most prime drilling locations are either locations that are right in hurricane alley or are difficult to control locations off of the Pacific seaboard near California, where simple drilling (not a wreck, just drilling the ocean floor) caused a pretty large spill back in the 60's which led to the implementation of the drilling moratorium in the first place. I don't have the answer to that question, hence the caveat. I scoff at people who think the environment isn't a big deal though and I ask them if they've ever been near somewhere that oil is being drilled, or a refinery (I have, overseas). If it's possible to drill without living in a Soviet-style industrial wasteland, I'm all for it. And if people that live in those areas are ok with turning their land into that, I guess I can't disagree with them either.

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) How about this guy? You know, I should start jumping up and down and screaming towards the ceiling every time I send an e-mail. If only everybody was as excited as he is about routinely doing their jobs. -

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 10:23 PM) I forgot another, James Posey. Yeah, I hate that cheap shot artist. Also, Rodney Harrison. I find myself actually hoping someone dives at his knees and tears his ACL. -

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 02:53 AM) Roy Williams, Lions- prick dances for a first down when down 17 with 30 seconds left. Yeah you get the feeling he would dance on 4th and 5 after a 3 yard catch. -
QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:26 AM) Isn't BA better against RHP than LHP? BA hit this year for a decent average against RHP but no power really. Then he had a mini-slump, but at that point he started getting platooned with Wise and has only hit LHP since then. If I'm not mistaken all of his homers come against LHP but his average is hovering over .200

QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:09 AM) I agree completely. For now, oil is our friend. But we need to plan for the future. If we did this 5-10 years ago, we wouldn't be in the problem we are now. Yeah, sure. Assuming gas prices would still be low we'd just be delaying the inevitable. We've been talking about reducing foreign oil dependency since the Carter administration and have made effectively zero progress since our economy is still pretty much structured around oil consumpition. We don't take it seriously until our wallets start punching us in the balls, and if oil went back to $1.80 tomorrow, we'd forget all about this by next spring. If we are going to drill here... fine, as long as we're not f***ing up the environment. But there needs to be some kind of hard incentive to do something else.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:17 AM) That is exactly what he was saying... Why would it be such a big deal that Camp Obama isn't saying something? Why is it such a big deal at all? Period? This is stupid and I laugh at anybody who takes this whole thing seriously or make it out to be anything more than it is. For anybody supporting McCain or bashing Obama the best thing to do is ignore this because the longer it lasts, the worse off the McCain camp looks.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 08:44 AM) Yes, there are probably 10 teams that would take Vazquez right now...but we wouldn't get Chris B. Young in return, that's for sure. Really? Good. I hate to revisit this yet again but I think I have to. You mean Vazquez isn't even worth Juan Uribe in return? Because Young's stats, with his absurdly low OBP, look a lot like Uribe's.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:51 AM) The high road? They are the ones benefitting, so of course they won't say anything. Why would they go dig a hole to match the one the McCain campaign seems to be digging?
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:33 AM) Me. His post contained exactly what I would have wanted to read... reaction. Again Obama's camp takes the high road. That about sums up my feelings right there. The more attention is paid to it by someone the harder it is for me to take them seriously. Paris Hilton ironically comes out of this whole thing smelling like roses.

2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Thread
lostfan replied to ChiSox_Sonix's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 08:26 AM) The US cycling team showed up in Beijing wearing doctor's type masks. Not exactly the way to overcome the 'ugly American' stereotype. I read Chinese news from time to time and it's kind of funny, they act like they don't even have a pollution problem there and it's all a figment of Westerners' imagination. Their news is written through rose-colored glasses, it makes me laugh. -
2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Thread
lostfan replied to ChiSox_Sonix's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
The Olympics used to be about the world coming together in the spirit of sportsmanship and losing to the United States. What happened to that? I want that again. Let's dominate the Olympics. -
Never underestimate the badness of the Detroit Tigers bullpen.

There is eventually going to be a compromise on drilling. Eventually. But not during the campaign season, and if it does happen (i.e. in Congress) it won't be a convergence of Obama and McCain's plans, that is just not how the game works and it's dumb to even think that. Drilling is a wedge and both parties are being ridiculous about it on purpose, but it's intentional. Democrats are acting like there's no point in drilling because it won't do anything (it will, obviously, and they know it) and Republicans are acting like drilling is some instant cure-all (truth be told we just don't have that much oil in this country, and they know it). If you read between the lines when someone from either party speaking on this is backed into a corner, their end goal really is the same. Given the way these things usually work, what happens in the end is going to actually be something like Paris Hilton was talking about. lol @ me citing her for actually knowing something. Pretty much ALWAYS there is going to be bickering and squabbling on the parties about things like this before a deal is ever reached. And yeah, sometimes they blow it, but this isn't something that's going away so if they do it'll be revisited. People (myself included) always act surprised when they see it in action.

Uribe would bat like .600 if he thought he was going to be benched all the time. When he knows he's the starter he bats .200.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 09:27 PM) OK sarcasm aside, that is what the Republicans want to do... but whatever, it sounds better to just attack everything. Mr. Pot, is that you?
