QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 02:18 PM) What would happen if the shuttle used to launch it into orbit exploded over a large land mass? It would suck, obviously.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 10:11 AM) I have to say that the second line of the subject title is pretty funny in when taking the story in context I was thinking the same thing.

Open-ended question: for spent nuclear fuel, what's preventing us from just putting this stuff on a rocket and sending it to the sun? The sun is basically a giant ball of nuclear fusion and whatever is sent there would burn up/disintegrate/whatever before it even gets there.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 08:27 AM) The irony is everyone is throwing around all of these ideas, but the best thing for alternative energies is high oil prices. I really believe that is why the Dems are fighting things that would bring down oil prices in the short-term so hard. Some of their highest leaders are knee deep in the start ups of those types of companies. Good luck trying to explain something like that to America. As a collective body, they don't want to hear it.

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 12:44 AM) did you feel great about them last summer? I had just gotten stocks last summer.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 07:31 PM) I would be totally thrilled with that and I'm pretty sure it's been proposed more than a few times. It's not in Senator Obama's plan online. I think that's a vastly better use of the "windfall tax" than sending out more money to people. R&D spending by energy companies has been basically flat over the last decade despite their soaring profits, and I think we might all be able to agree that fact needs to change. BP seems like it's pretty big on alternative energy though. Which makes me (as a stockholder to boot) feel better.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 10:05 PM) True, some Ron Paul supporters are just like the Obama zealots. I really don't see much of a difference. From an outside observer they both seem crazy. There are also sane Obama voters and sane Ron Paul voters, so it goes to show that having crazy supporters can hurt a candidate. Meh, the reason I decided to stop supporting Paul had nothing to do with supporters, it happened after I looked deeper at his policies. Some made perfect sense, many were borderline hysterical disguised under the "preserve the Constitution" banner. I do find it funny that so many anarchist, racist, and right-wing crazy groups are supporting him though... I doubt if that is the group he was going after, but those are his strongest supporters.
-
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 10:40 PM) same could be said of Obama, or really any candidate for that matter. I can honestly say that I believe a significant number of Paul supporters were pretty far out there. I was initially a Paul fan but the more I started finding out about him, the less I liked... Paul is too radical, borderline nuts because he seems to think this is 1885. His supporters didn't seem to care, they'd just spam various boards with

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 04:35 PM) They don't pose. Their slowness at getting out of the box just confuses you momentarily. No, Griffey definitely poses, there is no other name that you can call it. He hits his home runs and pauses for a good second to watch it fly before he takes his slow step out of the box. Nobody ever calls him on it because frankly, people love it because it looks so smooth.

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 04:42 PM) What were his numbers in Anaheim last season again? Something around a .340 OBP IIRC, which is just light years ahead of Uribe. That OBP shows us how much we need a bonafide leadoff hitter still though IMHO. Those #s were anomalously high for him though.
-
QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 03:47 PM) Seriously....but still he outright came out and said that he has done it and will do it again. They can't suspend you on speculation... Didn't he already get suspended for that though? What would be the point of suspending him now?

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 03:14 PM) Long - term I can't really see a future for Josh on the Sox. With KW looking for hitters with good OBP skills (hence the OC and Swish acquisitons) having Fields and his sub .300 OBP in the lineup is not something I can see happening. My guess is, we'll target Casey Blake in the off-season, or might enquire about Adrian Beltre possibly, if Seattle's asking price does come down. Although I typically have had a moderate position on Josh in comparison to a lot of the carried-away fanboys he apparently has, I still have to say it's pretty unreasonable to hold him to the stats he had after his first extended MLB stint, and expect he will never be any better than that. This applies to everyone, at any position. People who come up and take MLB by storm ala Alexei Ramirez are the exception, not the norm.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 11:59 AM) You're right. But, I don't think you see McCainbots going all over the place being that obnoxious and in your face about it, either, simply because most real GOP people don't really care for the guy. True enough but being pro-McCain and anti-Obama are 2 different things and one is not necessarily a prerequisite of the other. It's not necessarily here (although it is to some degree) but in order to see the equivalent anti-Obama fervor you don't even have to look very hard on the internet. Hell, you don't even have to look outside the Democratic party since there are plenty of Hillary supporters still all butt-hurt about her losing and would rather cut off their noses to spite their faces. Although not as many as people expected.

So these three pitching staffs have ERAs of 0.361, 0.39, and 0.395? Wow, not only are those incredible numbers, they have multiple pitchers on their staffs having historic seasons all at once :

What the hell happened to our pitching/defense?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 05:31 AM) I guess it's kind of a hypothetical/theoretical exercise, but with Garland in the rotation (maybe Contreras could have been shifted to the bullpen, although unlikely for someone at $10 million or so per year)...and Ramirez at SS and Uribe at 2B, would we be any better off? If we did not have Cabrera, there is no way that Ramirez would have been playing SS over Uribe. Actually since Richar got hurt it's anyone's guess who that would've been considering Alexei was still very raw at the time and may or may not have started at 2B(Ozuna? /shudder). -
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 12:36 AM) The more I see Fields play this season and see his AAA numbers, the more I feel like last year was a fluke. Watching last year, it was amazing to see Fields put up the numbers he did with what seemed to be an inability to hit a decent fastball. No not really, look at the rest of his minor league numbers. This season is the only anomaly. He had developed to the point where he eventually had an extended period of a OPS close to .900 and despite striking out a lot still drew a decent number of walks. The question shouldn't be whether last year was a fluke, the question should be whether he will be able to adjust to the majors (i.e., learn to hit a fastball). I find this somewhat ironic, because the breaking pitches in the majors are so much nastier than what you'll see in the minors.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 12:05 AM) I wonder what Olivo's career stats are against the Sox. It seems to me like so many former Sox, he's pretty much killed us at times. I could be mistaken, but Olivo seems like he feasts on us. Career batting average of .222, .639 OPS... not really, although he has a decent OPS (.800) against us this year. I guess it's just one of those things that seems worse than it is.

He looks completely overmatched right now. Does he have talent, sure. But he has shown absolutely nothing in his 3 starts and has been a complete liability. Give him some work, see where he's at in another year or so.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 04:23 PM) I don't think Greinke should be suspended, even if he wasn't facing the Twins next. He didn't throw at anyone's head or anything. It's not negotiable. You get warned, you throw at a guy, you're done. -

QUOTE (Karko's Throat Skin @ Aug 2, 2008 -> 04:30 PM) Never thought I would see the day where Juan Uribe is playing better defense than OC I don't get what all the hype is about OC's glove. Color me completely unimpressed with his defense this year. -
