QUOTE (Nokona @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 09:21 PM) And that General was Wesley Clark. Yeah but the McCain campaign said that his service record was "less than stellar."

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 09:09 PM) Does this mean he could be the next Josh Hamilton?
-
QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 06:12 PM) I doubt they would get that much for him. He is a prolific kick returner but a bad WR....I'd be happy as hell if they could but I would find it very unlikely. Probably not, and that's all the better.
-
QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 06:07 PM) I bet the Bears could get a 1st and 3rd for him....esp. with a team like Wash. If its a deal like that then hell go for it. IMO Should start with 2 firsts and a 3rd, at an absolute minimum. I'm talking about a really, really one-sided trade here where the other team thinks they scored big.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 05:04 PM) Agreed...although I think the Bears should use him like Darren McFadden (minus being QB). Use him as a RB, split him out wide, put him in the slot...move him around. He can and will change the game. Unfortunately my 11 year old stepdaughter could run the offense more creatively than Ron Turner once I explain to her what a draw and a play action is.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 05:43 PM) The funniest part about this whole thing is the allusion to Obama's speech that it was all about how America sucks. What a baseless thought. If you could just admit, that you knew, going into this speech, that you had your mind made up already that whatever Obama said it would fit your own narrative that he's a Euro-lovin, American-hatin liberal, this would all be a lot easier. There was one line in the speech - about how America hasn't always lived up to its ideals - a statement completely true - undeniably true, in a speech that trumpeted America's role in modern Europe. How, in a speech where he trumpets the Berlin air raids, America's role in freeing Berlin, religious race gender equality, be seen as an "America Sucks" speech. A speech where he isolates and gives a long pre and post pause to "I love America" that is then met by cheers, that is an "America sucks" speech. what a joke. That really does fit into the general post 9-11 mentality of the country though. Criticize America or point out flaws in any way, even if it's constructive, and you're espousing anti-American rhetoric. America, f*** yeah! Wooooo!

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 04:47 PM) I have to agree. But to his point, if McCain were over there giving a speech today, would it be news? Even if it were his best speech ever (I know, I know, oxymoron)? The answer is a resounding no. Well that's an interesting question that involves some hypotheticals, and I'd have to say the answer is yes. If McCain did an overseas tour and gave a "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech, it absolutely would get significant news coverage. Would it get the same amount as Obama's is getting? No, probably not. But there's several other factors that have to do with that, not least of which is the fact that McCain is really running a lame-assed campaign that just looks boring, and lacks any real direction aside from being anti-Obama, as Rex was saying.

If it's like an absolute rape of a trade, then yes.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 02:51 PM) If you take the Domicans, Venezualans, Japanese, Mexicans, Cubans from the Major Leagues. Where would you rate US Baseball? That's a very good question, and I wouldn't know. One would like to say that it's America always, but even if that's true, it's not like there is a big gap between Americans and the other baseball-crazy countries. In international competition, that just hasn't shown itself yet.

McCain (intended as a swipe at Obama): Well, I'd love to give a speech in Germany ... a political speech or a speech that maybe the German people would be interested in," he said. "But I would much prefer to do it as president of the United States rather than as a candidate for the office of the presidency." Well, no s*** there John. What's your point?

I'm noticing that people seem to be downplaying the fact that history will happen if Obama does get elected, like it won't even matter... borderline resentful actually, that it had to be him that made history. It would actually have as much historical significance as the Emancipation Proclamation if it did happen, let's make no mistake about that.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 02:52 PM) And to me, that's just hating just to hate, in a sense. I think that's why it bothers me so much for all the pandering that Obama's doing. It's all superficial bulls*** - what did he really say today? NOTHING! It was all rah rah rah America has been wrong and I will make it right petty bulls***. Bush has been an idiot, clearly. But Obama is no different then the rest of them, despite the pretty boy image being pushed. Oh wait, I guess all this is supposed to go in the McCain love thread (even though I can't stand him almost as bad as Obama). It isn't Americans doing that (although clearly there's not much love for Bush left), it's all the non-Americans. That's just reality, nothing that can really change that.

Until recently I'd always thought that opinion of Cuban baseball was a consensus. Cubano told me some things I otherwise didn't know, but even so, nobody outside of Cuba even knows enough about Cuban baseball to even compare them to anyone else.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 03:42 PM) Of course! Hate Bush, love Obama. That is what this is all about after all, eh? Actually, yeah. It really is that simple. Not being named Bush will do wonders for foreign policy.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 03:37 PM) When's the last time we saw crowds of Germans waving American flags? 2001 probably? Bush had all the political capital in the world at that point, what he did next is analogous to winning the lottery, going to Vegas, and blowing it all on coke and strippers. All before his first term ended.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 03:17 PM) No, I have a very fundamental problem with several statements in this speech. Obama's over there kissing everyone's ass except America. That bothers me. It's the same spew and rhetoric that John Kerry had in 2004 with a little fancy window dressing. It's the same veiled bulls*** we've seen for 4 years now, but the *gasp* messiah gets crowds of 100,000 people (hey, free concert, anyone????) listening to him. I'll point out my specifics later and the issues I have with them, but there's my general comment. Edit: and one more thing... I thought this trip wasn't political. If this speech isn't a political one, I don't know what is. Yawn. If foreigners like a candidate for the president of the U.S., also often referred to as "the leader of the free world," and they can parlay that into a political advantage, good for them. You want him to go there and start kissing America's ass or something and talk about how great and powerful we are? What practical sense does that make, why would they want to hear that? What kind of leader would do something like that? I just don't understand. If you took the bolded part at face value though, I don't know what to tell you.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 02:31 PM) Obama should be running for the EU president - pretty soon, he'll be working the world to get elected... Oh, wait a minute, Germans can't vote for the US president, yet. You're just hating for the sake of hating now.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) Well, I guess it's always possible he might have a history that hasn't yet been disclosed. Bush had a DUI that didn't come out until the week before the election in 2000 IIRC. And I laughed about that. Who cares about something he did 30 years ago?

I heart Devin but he is nothing more than a gimmick on offense right now. He and only he has the ability to be learn the plays and do more. -
The question there is pretty clear. If he doesn't have a criminal record for drug use, he answers no. It didn't ask "have you ever used drugs?"

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 01:42 PM) Do some reading on this. Seriously, its interesting stuff. I wouldn't say Powell didn't screw up, 'cause he did. But if you see how it all played out, its obvious that Powell was the one trying to inject some common sense into the discussion. He was misled and manipulated, not to mention outcast and isolated. Yes. That's what I'm saying. He was the only one being reasonable about the whole thing from the beginning. Everyone else was just itching to pull the trigger.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 12:56 PM) Every day that Hester misses, he diminishes his value to the Bears. There is no one on the team who needs more practice at his position than Hester. He needs as many reps as possible if he even wants to think about being a #1. For comparison's sake, Steve Smith played WR in college and was more refined coming into the NFL whereas Hester was a raw athlete who didn't have any real position. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 11:37 AM) Basically the idea would be that the higher the minimum wage goes, the more people there are out there who would be willing to either take jobs for cash (an amount falling under what it would cost to employ someone, thus saving the company money) under the table, and/or hire illegal aliens to work for less than the minimum wage. Oh, I was gonna comment that I thought hiring illegal immigrants was essentially modern-day slavery. I wanted to make sure you were saying what I thought you were saying before I said that though or it would've looked like a non-sequitor.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 12:28 PM) Besides the obvious inflation and labor pool implications, it would be interesting to see the affect that had on the black market employment, specifically illegal aliens. I wonder if anyone has done a study? Can you re-word this question because I am retarded?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 11:56 AM) No. If only Powell had the balls to realize that the Administration was using his credibility as their main method of selling their war and said "no more", then that might have improved this presidency. People can respect him for being loyal, for the work he did in the past, whatever they want...no one forced him to go before the U.N. and present intel that he didn't believe in. I think he was aware he was being used and whatever else but that doesn't make what I said any less true. He was right, and nobody else listened. He caved and we know what happened after that. And when I say that I'm also talking about how Rumsfeld chose to do his own thing and didn't listen to any advice... hey Donny, remember Powell's tactics when he did it, don't you suppose he knew what he was talking about? (Not that how we handled the initial invasion is even relevant anymore, but now I'm just talking about the lack of attention to details and general incompetence)
