  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 02:40 PM) Really it goes back to the class warfare and scare tactics that have been totally previlant during this election cycle. He has to throw out all of the scary things like NAFTA and China, even when they aren't related, and make no sense together anyway. The fact Obama is conviently missing is that we have no free trade agreement with China, but that doesn't fit his rhetoric, so he has to bring in NAFTA to scare people with. He also likes to leave out that all of those cheap imports are what keep consumers spending ability in check with the small wage growth over the years. I would love to hear the howls from people if they made Toyotas cost $40,000 each to protect American automotive workers and simliar types of actions. Free trade is a two way street, and not the demon that the unions are paying him to say that it is. Remember that the next time you log onto your cheap foreign made computer. In other words, he is lying at best, and clueless at worst. Semantics aside, the underlying theme in all of this from opponents of free trade (and I use the term "opponents" loosely, because being in that category doesn't make someone against all types of free trade) is the trade deficit and loss of U.S. jobs to overseas manufacturers, usually to India and China. But it is an election year and the economy is stagnant, so the rhetoric gets turned up, making the BS meters register more than they would normally.
  2. I really don't think Congressional approval ratings mean much of anything.
  3. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 01:34 AM) Playoffs are a whole other level and there is no sub for experience. Count, Mark, Javy, fight over the rest. The concept of playoff experience is overrated.
  4. There is no substitute for the national anthem - so please, stop shoving God Bless America down my throat. FWIW, at school, we used to sing the national anthem and THEN sing the black national anthem immediately afterwards (my school was 99% black). Not together, nobody would've ever thought of doing that.
  5. Why the hell does Chris Young lead off? Never figured that one out.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 4, 2008 -> 11:20 AM) I was just listening to the radio and was reminded of another brilliant thing to do, shoot your gun into the air! Yep, down here tonight guys (it's always guys) will aim into the sky and let a few rounds go. And they will come down, and usually someone is hurt. Don't go to Iraq after they win a soccer match. It sounds like straight up WWIII.
  7. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 01:12 PM) The law stinks and is bad for both parties. I don't give a micros*** who's name is on it. I'm hoping that Obama wrecks it and they have to start over.
  8. Besides being kind of hideous-looking as a baseball jersey I find nothing at all wrong with it, Independence Day is a patriotic nationalist-type holiday and I see paying tribute to the military as entirely appropriate. (Full disclosure, I'm a vet, so I guess that feeling is natural for me.)
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 4, 2008 -> 09:19 PM) Yes, he wouldn't have made a difference tonight. However, the fact that we're creating opportunities for Uribe to play just so that we can eventually trade him is pathetic. The Sox aren't going to get s*** for him anyways. Honestly that doesn't even matter since it's hindsight. Ramirez is clearly better than Uribe right now by leaps and bounds.
  10. We have a tendency to suck against Oakland. Not too concerned yet, some more offensive production against a pitcher that was not so good would've been nice though.
  11. This makes me sad, like when the Tigers traded Grilli.
  12. So I'm in town, and I was at the game talking mad s*** once I found out Wise was leading off for the Sox today, and how mad I was that he was leading off, then he hits a leadoff home run. Awesome times.
  13. Russell has almost half as many wins as Danks.
  14. So yeah this team apparently likes the drama. Hey, I'm down.
  15. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 10:29 PM) Ozzie doesnt need all that mumbo jumbo. Clearly... and he pulls that 8 ball out of his ass, apparently.
  16. I swear to God sometimes I think Ozzie doesn't even look at charts, or scouting reports, anything like that.
  17. Well at the major league level you can tell if a curveball is coming when the pitcher is releasing it since his arm motion is slightly different and he's holding the ball different, and if you're really good you can even see the reverse spin. The thing is, this is the major leagues, and their breaking pitches are disgusting.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 10:02 PM) One thing I've noticed about CQ's struggles against LHP is that he pulls a lot more pitches against them than when he faces RHP. Hence the extra power numbers and lack of a batting average. He still walks a lot though.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 08:30 PM) Some reason why? Should've clarified that better... there is production (over .800 OPS) but he isn't consistent with the batting average yet (.211).
  20. Shouldn't expect a whole lot out of CQ vs. lefties for the time being yet either.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 09:23 PM) Unless you really need a home run. That too.
  22. Shouldn't the title say Colombia?
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 09:21 PM) He's the perfect bench player...so when PK gets back, he'll be even more useful. As long as he's not only starting against lefties, which he can't hit against.
  24. Brian, make me look stupid for starting that thread please.
