That's twice so far that I've seen Pablo try and make amends for f***ing something up.

I've been thinking about this the last few days, I've seen it mentioned a couple of times by other posters, and I mentioned it in today's game thread but it won't really get discussed here. Why is Anderson being put in against lefties, and Wise against righties? Because Anderson is good against LHP and Wise against RHP right? Well, no, not so much. Anderson CAN hit RHP although coincidentally all 4 of his HRs came against LHP. This year he's hitting .273 against RHP (over .300 I believe until a couple weeks ago and when Wise got here) and .156 against LHP. Yeah, that's a pretty big gap there that he's not going to close unless he faces them both on a regular basis. For reference's sake - in 2006 he was .249/.204 so it's not just a this year thing. So, that must mean DeWayne Wise is amazing against RHP right? Well he's hitting .346 right now but that's a microscopic sample size, so let's go back and see his career MLB numbers which is .215... yuck. And this isn't just because he struggled adjusting to MLB pitching in his The only logical explanation I can think of here is that Ozzie wants Anderson to get work in against lefties, but even still, it's not like he hurts the team against RHP? Am I that far off base here to be wondering all this?

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 06:09 PM) do you really think there is a point to these bolded questions when you ask them? What most of us are disappointed in not showing this play, is that they are doing it for a not very convincing reason, to me. And the people of the town are missing out on an opportunity to see a truly great play because of 1 sentence in it. A play that is thought provoking and allows to think about history and culture in different frames. If they switch it out for a different musical that has these qualities, I'm fine with it. BUt if they put on some awful andrew lloyd webber musical they are doing a disservice to the town. Agreed. If this play was a movie I'd classify it PG-13, only because of that line. Well there is another time where the same guy refers to Coalhouse Walker's girlfriend as "his whore and his whore's baby" but that's still PG-13, IMO. Whatever else happens just reflects the reality of the 1910's.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 06:57 PM) It's not, but a respect their right to not stage the play. This was not a case where someone wanted to stage it and was told no. The same group that looked into it, decided against it. And I'm fine with that. But we're not talking about like KKK propaganda here.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 05:45 PM) Your wife shares a birthday with my son Brendan, who is 4 years old today. We are going to Saturdays game to celebrate. Tonight its cake and ice cream with the family. Lets get a win. Happy Birthday to the kid My brother's birthday is tomorrow, my dad's is the 7th (good god is he old, he's turning 60), July birthdays are fun times.

Man, Anderson having to hit off only lefties and putting Wise against righties is basically setting him up to fail. No damn wonder his average dropped the way it did. Wanna torpedo Carlos Quentin's batting average too? Do the same thing to him.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 05:37 PM) I do not believe that every park district that puts on a play needs to follow that same mission statement of enlightening, offending, creating change, etc. I believe there is room for non controversial, family entertainment, and that is what a park district should be involved in. GP rated events that the entire family can enjoy. Believe it or not, there are volumes of plays by Simon, Williams, Shepard, O'Neil, Miller, etc that could be staged. But I've come to accept that around here the consensus is that insulting, offending, is always preferred to something less controversial. As I stated in the post above the play in its entirety is not nearly as offensive as you seem to be under the impression it is. It's not like we're talking about an episode of South Park here.
-
QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 11:24 AM) I think it is reasonable for a family to be able to walk through the park without a government funded musical singing racial insults. FYI - I saw the play a long time ago dozens of times since I used to work at the Oriental Theater on Randolph when Ragtime was the play that re-opened it, across from the Chicago Theater (used to work there too). IIRC, there was only one line in the play that had an overt racial slur, a little more than halfway through the first act, where one of the characters sings "Does he think only n*****s get s***/We Irish had to get used to it!" The article makes it sound like the show was laced with profanity and racial slurs, where it's not like that at all unless they've changed the dialogue, which I doubt. Obviously, if heard out of context, it's offensive, but when watching the play it's clearly part of how they're portraying social conditions at the time, and this particular line is relevant to the story. It's a really good story too, btw.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 01:14 PM) Completely agree with you on Floyd. It appears that he had a bit of a dead arm period which he's pitched through (his velocity was up his last outing) and hopefully we'll be able to get him right around the 200 inning mark. Of course you also have to remember if we hit post-season play you are adding a bit more innings as well (and hopefully we will be ) You love your parentheses don't you?

I'm not going to give up the fantasy of Brand being on the Bulls yet. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 12:47 PM) Pretty much, however, part of the reason he has a low win total is his inability to go late in a lot of games. Certainly not down on Johnny, but the one thing he needs to work on is being more efficient and lasting longer into games (like last night). I know he certainly has not gotten the run support, but lasting a few more games into the 6th, 7th or 8th just may have netted him a few more w's (and will in the future). Edit: Sorry, a bit late on this post. Was writing, then got a phone call. He definitely needs to work on pitch count and go later into games. But even still, there have been several times where the team's inability to score or hold a lead has outright shafted him out of a win. At times, it's downright amusing. It was the same way last year, when it took him forever to get his first win. You'd think the team hates him.

I took a Rush Limbaugh this morning after I had my coffee. I felt 5 lbs lighter.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 11:18 AM) Quality starts are great and put your club in position to win the game, but I'm a bigger fan of a 7 inning 3 ER start because I think that puts the decision in the hands of the pitcher. Again, I'm a bit nitpicky there and am always happy with a quality start, but love it when our guys go 7. Well if John Danks had Mark Buehrle's efficiency, he would be the best pitcher in the AL right now.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 12:11 PM) Still, while Danks has been amazing in terms of limiting runs and he's definately been hurt by the lack of run support you can put some of the blown games or no decisions on him because he has had a good deal of outings where he doesn't go deep into games which than puts it on the pen earlier and just increases the likelihood of the decision falling on someone else. That above is why I do believe you can't just ignore wins. Obviously it is dependent on other factors, but there are certain things pitchers can do to step up. Plus, sometimes you have to just cinch her up and hunker down when you know you have a lesser margin of error (ie, facing a tougher opponent or when your going head to head with another ace). Danks last night...now thats one of those games where he was completely jobbed, but you could say the same thing about Cliff Lee. I'm a firm believer in the quality start - if you go 6 innings and haven't given up many runs, that's enough for the team. If you have the lead, you should win when you come out, 6 innings is a fair expectation for a starter most times. If he goes more than that, all the better. Danks certainly has his fair share of quality starts, and not the borderline 6 IP 3 ER ones either.
-
It's just sad to me that wins are actually a metric that people use, and the first thing people look at. Danks should have 10 or 11 wins now and it's not his fault he's a 5 game winner, and it's obvious when you look at his stats. Wins = useless.

Do you guys really think McCain is so retarded that he's going to stick to saying he doesn't know anything about the economy? Of course he's going to deny he said that or act like that's not what he meant.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 08:59 AM) Good thing Wise hit for BA. Thats all I have to say about that. Despite Wise's anomalously high batting average the odds of either of them getting that hit (or not getting it) are about the same, also keep in mind this is Joe Borowski we're talking about. Borowski is right-handed, and also effing horrible.

QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 09:32 AM) His height profiles more as a 3, but he plays an inside game. He'll score at whatever position, but you're limiting his rebounding ability and asking him to defend along the perimeter. (Not that defense is his strong suit, anyway, but you'd like to play him where his defense is 'less weak'.) It wouldn't be a disaster, but it's not the best use of his skills. Even so, Beasley-Brand would be one of the better 3-4 combos in the league. -
QUOTE (ChiSox35 @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 08:38 AM) Rooney's call was better. I'm so happy I taped the am1000 broadcast. I got the World Series dvds and all that, but it's the cassette recordings of the home call that give me the chills if I ever listen to them. Not living in Chicago I can't hear radio broadcasts anymore.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 04:18 AM) for second place probably Well last year's NL Central "race" was certainly like that. The Brewers and Cubs desperately tried to choke away the division. It was epic.

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 08:36 AM) joe buck was definitely not that emphatic. i hate joe buck. So do I, but I've watched that over and over, I'll remember that call forever. Actually if I'm not mistaken the full call was "tying run at second, two outs, Palmeiro over the head of Jenks, Uribe charges, throws - OUT! And the White Sox have won the World Series!"

QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 03:54 PM) Has he said anything about Miami, or is it just that Miami would like to get him (which has been rumored for a while now)? It would be a tough sell now that Beasley is down there, especially when they already have Haslem and Marion. Even if you trade Marion, do you play Beasley at the 3 to accommodate Brand? Well, before the draft some people were saying he might project to a 3 in the NBA anyway. Not to say he won't play PF, but I don't think moving him to SF would hurt anything.
