  1. QUOTE (RibbieRubarb @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 02:42 PM) So I've been praying to Joe for about a year now. And I noticed something. I noticed that all the prayers I used to offer to God, and all the prayers I now offer to Joe Pesci, are being answered at about the same 50% rate. Half the time I get what I want, half the time I don't. Same as God, 50-50. Same as the four-leaf clover and the horseshoe, the wishing well and the rabbit's foot, same as the Mojo Man, same as the Voodoo Lady who tells you your fortune by squeezing the goat's testicles, it's all the same: 50-50. So just pick your superstition, sit back, make a wish, and enjoy yourself.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 02:01 PM) How about these yummy, totally safe, tomatoes. Tomato is a fruit
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 02:05 PM) I would like to know why you would say something if you had no intent on following through with it... It's pretty obvious to me.
  4. I just would like to know who, how, and why people expect someone to be able to govern without at least a nominal acknowledgement of Washington insiders.
  5. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 01:29 PM) Of course not. I'm happy that he's getting time out there and that he's produced on occasion (although he's looked bad lately). If someone had made a bet with me at the beginning of the season that Anderson was going to get cold, and this exact thread (or one closely resembling it) was going to be started shortly thereafter (but only after his batting average dipped below .250 and stayed for a week or so) I would've bet my mortgage on it. It's so damn funny, and predictable.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 12:16 PM) Its GOING to happen, I would bet you money. If terrorists are going to get the same rights as everyone else, they are going to get the same kind of odds at getting off in court. That's a part of our system, just ask OJ how well the justice system works. Short of rigging the system in a way that's completely counterproductive to the point of having a trial in the first place (in order to guarantee conviction, which would make us look pretty banana republic) there isn't a better alternative.
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 07:21 AM) You're naive. Many people were turned in in Afghanistan for the reward money. There was never any evidence, except person X (Who was paid several thousand dollars) saying Person Y is a terrorist. Hundreds of people have already been released from Gitmo over the last 5 years because we found out that, hey, they really weren't terrorists and there was no evidence that they were. Your line of logic is "If you've been arrested, you must be guilty. Why else would they arrest you?!" That is 100% opposite of our legal system. We don't "know" that these people are terrorists. We suspect it. You go to court, you present evidence, and you give a fair trial to prove your case. Thank you ...when we start actually letting terrorists arbitrarily go free is when I will start getting pissed off. That has not happened, but you'd think it would with the overreaction to this.
  8. QUOTE (RibbieRubarb @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) George Carlin, in his routines, said he worshipped the Sun (because he could see it) and prayed to Joe Pesci (because he was a good actor and it looked like he could get things done). Joe Pesci doesn't f*** around. My neighbor had a loud ass dog next door that I couldn't get through to, I called Joe Pesci and he straightened that c***sucker out in one visit.
  9. Carlin was an icon, and my favorite stand-up comedian of all time. Dude was just hilarious. His earlier routines would have my stomach hurting from laughing too hard. The 10 Commandments was probably my favorite.

  11. QUOTE (BobDylan @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 12:03 AM) I think there is more to it then that. It's still a ballpark the players aren't quite familiar with. From the wind to the clubhouse. The Cubs do have more of a home field advantage, as do the Red Sox, than other teams around the league. Aramis Ramirez hit a homer off Octavio Dotel in game 2 that was an obvious pop-up. He stood at the plate knowing it was going over the fence. There is a thread up about the "true" distance of the homers hit in the series. The Sox pounded theirs out. The Cubs didn't. If somebody sat there and told me that it is just dumb luck to catch all those jet-streams, I wouldn't believe them. They know something their opponents don't. It's not an aberration that the Cubs struggle on the road. That said, they still kicked the s*** out of the Sox. There are no excuses for that. Oh I'm not denying that the Cubs know how to play Wrigley better than the Sox. But fatigue can't be a factor here. That's just funny to me.
  12. QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 22, 2008 -> 11:36 PM) Another thing that people don't realize is that road records around the league are bad. I think Morgan said that only five teams have winning records on the road, and a week ago there were only three. The fact that MLB now tests for amphetamines is probably part of the reason. In this case I'm sure driving to a different spot in the city 8 miles to the north was just murderous.
  13. QUOTE (Yoda @ Jun 22, 2008 -> 11:12 PM) In '05 we had Garcia who was a road warrior and could be looked upon to step it up when needed. This year we don't seem to have one pitcher who has the balls to at least give a hint of wanting to be the show stopper. This team needs to be lit up the ass . . . quick Can't complain about Danks.
  14. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 22, 2008 -> 11:22 PM) What's the over/under on how many times Cabrera called the pressbox to argue about that error? Actually, I noticed he turned to look at the scoreboard right after that.
  15. QUOTE (Felix @ Jun 22, 2008 -> 11:16 PM) That's not what I think at all. I think it's terrible that the Sox got swept, the same way I feel whenever they get swept. Does it matter that its the Cubs? No, it'd be 10 times worse if it was the Twins that did it. Fact of the matter is that the Cubs have a good team, and are especially good at home. But this was one s***ty series. It's not the end of the season and it's not even close to the end of this playoff race that we're in. The Sox definitely need to be more consistent if they want to stay in it for the long run, but it's much too early to start giving on a team that plays 162 games during the regular season. Well it doesn't help matters that said Twins swept a series at the same time we were getting swept so they still ended up gaining those 3 games. Essentially it's the same except for the fact that we still get to play the Twins for those 3 games later. I just don't think this Sox team is a contender yet, they are still a couple of players away. They're tons more competitive than last year (more than I thought they'd be, I thought this would be a .500 team), and we've had 3 roster additions that have improved us a great deal in Quentin, Ramirez, and Swisher, plus Floyd and Danks both look legit. But we had a long way to go to fix the disaster that was last year, and the team has come a ways but is still not ready yet. But the good news is the core of the roster is mostly young.
  16. The Army's already had UAV pilots. Unless I'm reading that wrong. BTW, great post Balta, I couldn't have said that better myself.
  17. QUOTE (Maxwell @ Jun 21, 2008 -> 03:33 PM) I missed most of the game today. Why did ozzie leave the count in to give up 9 er? Here is a quote from a friend of mine on another board regarding this: Atta Boy Ozzie, just leave Contreras in there, an eight run inning, Mother F*** You forever you c*** sucking Venezuelan Commie f***!
  18. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 21, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) LOL if he can't throw his forkball, he isn't effective it's a pretty simple concept, about as simple as your response. If these are the quality of posts I'm going to see then I guess I'll just log off Soxtalk for a little while until everybody gets all this bulls*** out of their system.
  19. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 21, 2008 -> 03:01 PM) If Jose sh*ts the bed in his next start, I think we can pretty much stick a fork in him LOL
  20. Ok, I just have to chime in here: very predictable thread
  21. QUOTE (BobDylan @ Jun 21, 2008 -> 03:14 AM) Execution, my friends, is the reason the White Sox lost that game. Not because of the bullpen, not because of Brian Anderson, not because they took Danks out. Execution. 16 total runners left on base, 8 with 2 out and RISP. When a team leaves 16 on base and only scores 3 runs, a debatable baserunning mistake is not where to point your finger. Well as far as individual performances go, Dotel immediately giving up back to back homers in like 5 pitches to lose the lead is pretty glaring. But it shouldn't have even come to that, the Sox had multiple opportunities to pull away from the Cubs and failed almost every time.
  22. Honestly I am dumbfounded that some of you guys are trying to put unnecessary blame on Anderson here though, or otherwise harping on it and ignoring the fact that the next 3 batters simply failed to execute and made it all irrelevant. Would it have even mattered if he got to 3rd? What happened on the next 3 at-bats? Thome pops out, OC flies out but not deep enough for a tag-up, AJ strikes out. Inning over. How is a leadoff double somehow substandard? You can split hairs all you want about semantics but he is still standing there in scoring position, and he is coming around on the next base hit, if there is one (which there is not). All of you guys know good and well that if he HAD run around to 3rd and gotten tagged out, you'd be ready to summarily execute him on the field, just like you were the last time he tried to advance to 3rd.
  23. For 2004 I feel like I stepped into a timewarp in January and then came out in January 2005. I don't remember much about that year at all, I come back and got people's kids walking and talking and whatnot, every song on the radio is something I never heard before, I don't remember Juan Uribe actually being a good hitter for a while. I feel the same way about the end of 02 and beginning of 03. I can just remember major highlights since I was on the net all the time, like the Bears trading Booker for Ogunleye etc.
  24. I just read the whole thing and now I understand the part the Democrats are pissed about... I'm okay with the expansion/overhaul of FISA as long as the separation of powers is maintained (I have never been against the general concept of domestic spying, per se), but I really don't like the language in there about the telecom companies. That sets an ugly, ugly precedent. Basically the president can tell a private entity that it's ok to do something, and then there will be no repercussions if it's found that later the activity that took place was illegal. That's garbage.
  25. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 21, 2008 -> 12:23 AM) If I recall, there was some controversy as well about Ryan having some guy video tape Obama's every move. BearSox goes to the Wikipedia school of political information... haha It's ok, so do I because I was overseas at that time and I don't remember much.
