  1. So do the Sox have anybody that can run as fast as that little girl before the game a few mins ago?
  2. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 06:24 PM) <!--quoteo(post=1666399:date=Jun 17, 2008 -> 05:51 PM:name=Balta1701)-->QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 05:51 PM) <!--quotec-->Rep Issa, R-CA. During discussion on a resolution recognizing the late Tim Russert. Classy.... apparently on Monday Fox News brushed off Russert as a member of the liberal media. He didn't really go into detail, so I'm not sure what he meant (my wife was watching it).
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 05:51 PM) I do respect Ron Paul for what he is. I don't respect the fact that it isn't the 18th century anymore, and he doesn't get that. I like a lot of his concepts as goals to move towards, ie smaller government, smaller taxes, less government regulation and meddling etc. He would just collapse our entire republic if he did it at the speed he wanted to. In a weird sort of way, I would have preferred him to this John McCain. I agree. I liked his desired end state a lot, but his "in the meantime" was completely unrealistic and borderline absurd. The America we know would be unrecognizable. And I don't know if it's just him campaigning or what, but this doesn't seem to be the John McCain I knew even just a couple years ago.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 04:35 PM) And Ron Paul's campaign didn't try to spin away inconvenient facts like the statements from his newsletter and those sorts of details? Note the word "apparent" ...and that just reinforces my point anyway.
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 04:28 PM) And I hate it. All Kaperbole ™ aside, campaigning - you might as well just have a steaming pile of stinky ass manure right behind you on stage every single time out. I can't stand the rhetoric and lies all to basically pull wool over the entire countries' eyes. And I'm not talking about one party or the other. There's just no honesty or integrity anymore to just about anything, and it disgusts me. I used to feel the same way, but now I look at it from a practical standpoint - if a politician based a campaign off complete and total honesty, and told the American public what they needed to hear instead of what they wanted to hear, and having broken ranks too far from their party to boot, there is no way they get elected. It sucks but that's reality. Sure you might have the occasional apparent exception to the rule like Ron Paul, which is refreshing, but... well, where's Paul now?
  6. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 04:11 PM) BUT, I do think that these candidates, without regard to party, will spit out rhetoric like this that all sounds like the world is going to be such a better place for all, no matter who is president, all because of them. Okay... sure... it's up to us, really. Well, yeah. That's the point of campaigning isn't it?
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 03:52 PM) SS, you work in finance - so I am surprised you see the math that way. In no way did Obama say he was going to fund 5 million jobs with $150B. He said he'd invest $150B in the sector, which he feels could create 5 million jobs. And I actually think that number might be conservative, in terms of how many jobs could be created in that sector. But he's not saying $150B is the SALARY of those jobs. He is saying he wants to fund projects with that money, which should help push businesses into growth that creates jobs. So, actually, the math is just fine. You may not agree that 5 million jobs could be created by the investment, but, there is nothing mathematically wrong with his statement. I was getting ready to say something similar, along the lines of 150 billion sparking growth which will lead to 5 million jobs in the future. That's totally different than, say, spending 150 billion on federal contracts and creating X amount of jobs.
  8. Honest question: What's Getz done in the minors that Richar hasn't done or couldn't do?
  9. QUOTE (quickman @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) lets only hope, as for owens his injuries may have cost him his career. he has had several opps this year, and bad luck is following him around like pigpen from peanuts. Its not meant to be. Kenny needs to infuse some stuff right away. Well if he likes Chicago I heard the Bears could use some help at WR. (green not necessary)
  10. QUOTE (quickman @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 02:18 PM) that would be 15 days Not necessarily. 15 days is the minimum, could be longer
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 10:29 AM) I should live up to that standard? How have I not? I think I've been pretty damn clear about my feelings on this - I don't care what the candidate's followers are doing. I just don't. The only exception is if they are in their de facto administration, their inner circle, and are speaking FOR the campaign. And I am not sure why you think it hasn't worked both ways. If anything, I am seeing quite a bit of B.S. from both wings, and neither candidate has been strong on stopping it. They can't anyway. I think that was intended to be a dig on Obama and not you FWIW
  12. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 09:30 AM) that's a fair point. Steve Jobs was a college drop-out. You mean he recorded a critically-acclaimed, platinum rap album?
  13. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 10:21 AM) please let me know if you think this is a stretch, but here is where I find it interesting. He finished 5th from the BOTTOM of his class (reportedly) due to behavioral issues 40 years ago and is well known for his anger issues. Combine those 2 together and it make an interesting profile of a potential future president. Maybe I am over analyzing. But those are something that raises my eyebrow. (This from a man who was willing to support McCain until he actually opened his mouth and talked about the issues) McCain doesn't make much of any effort to hide from that either though. It's not a secret.
  14. Oh I would not call Fields a "plodder" either, definitely an all-or-nothing hitter but as far as speed and athleticism I would say he's around where Anderson and Quentin are.
  15. QUOTE (Noberto Martin @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 08:29 PM) Why does Jerry Owens get so much love? What on earth are you talking about? The majority of people on this site hate Jerry Owens.
  16. I can't really say I care about something McCain did 40 years ago though. His service record at Annapolis is kind of irrelevant anymore. It would've been relevant if he'd just graduated this decade, maybe.
  17. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 04:49 PM) If we wanted a CF, why would we call up Owens? We don't need a CF, we need someone who can get on base and score runs (i.e. play leadoff). I mean, with Swisher out and assuming you're not putting Anderson in CF, you're not going to put Quentin out there and you surely in the hell aren't going to put Dye out there (although that would be f***ing hilarious to see Dye try to play CF).
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 02:28 PM) I don't want the "heavy fist" to be wealded by the same people who currently mis-regulate everything under the sun. This are the same people who have ruined the financial industry because of their complete lack of knowledge of the financial markets with Sarbines Oxley, and yet we are supposed to trust them with the direction of our transportation industry? No thanks. I am not interested in seeing them screw up something else. Hell it is the governments pork barrel spending on the transportation system for cars that has put us into this situation in the first place. Instead of building more roads for the people back home, they should have been investing in rapid transit systems for the good of the country. If they decide this, we'll end up with the betamax of transit. I'm okay with the gov't giving businesses and people incentives and nudging them in a desired direction, though.
  19. I'm mildly psyched about this. The actual news is basically meaningless since we don't have a fuel cell station network, but I imagine if everything keeps moving in this direction, it eventually will. I was reading from somewhere that hydrogen can be produced from solar power too?
  20. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 01:30 PM) Not me, anyway. It comes straight from looking at his policies. And you look at his policies, and you figure he believes he's doing the right thing, but you think said policies are going to be ineffective or otherwise bad.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 01:18 PM) I keep seeing the GWB 3 comparision made too, and it makes just as much sense to me. Obama is out there proposing lots of the samethings that failed during Carters time, and since that is the tone here, I figured why not. I think the Carter comparison is from people who think Obama is a nice guy who means well but is going to be an ineffective leader, just like Carter was.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 01:31 PM) Yep. Jimmy Carter the second is going to do it the way that it has always been done. I don't see how that's a negative though or why somebody would expect that of all things to be "changed." That's just a reach IMO, might as well criticize him for wearing a suit everyday too. He still has to do certain things and "play politics" if he wants to get elected, he can't just be all half-assed and then expect people to vote for him just because he's "different." That's like saying "Alexei Ramirez can't be any better than Juan Uribe, they both use black bats!"
  23. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 01:23 PM) Yeah, but the one he wants, he wants to do on the 4th of July? C'mon. There's going to be more debates when this is all said and done. McCain wants to do it in a way that makes McCain look good and Obama vice versa. Obama's not going to deliberately let McCain play to his strengths against him, that'd just be damn silly. McCain threw the first punch, so Obama's gonna counter, McCain will counter again etc. Wash/rinse/repeat until November.
  24. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) Its all negotiating. There will be at least a few debates. Bush and Kerry did, what, four or so? I'd bet these two do around that many. If Obama truly avoids them entirely, or only does one, then I'll be disappointed too. But I doubt that happens. There is no way that Obama avoids McCain entirely. Just not happening. Also McCain knew full well that Obama would say no to 10 debates. It's all strategy and negotiation like you said.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) Just like that guy at the top of the Democratic ticket who wasn't running When they showed him he asked "Is it fair to say you're thinking about running in '08?" and he said "it's fair." (they left us to assume that he had just said "no" in the previous question.) Everybody else was a categorical "no" though. Nobody wanted to come clean.
