  1. I keep saying I don't recognize this version of McCain anymore, that I used to like him and everything, but the more I think about that the more I don't think the pandering he's doing right now is going to affect his presidency. He has a very fine line to walk, he needs to get the GOP base fired up in spite of the fact that they don't like him, hence the pandering. At the same time he needs to appeal to the independents who he needs, or they won't get elected. However, if he's elected president, he can do whatever the hell he wants, and he doesn't need to pander to the far right. At the same time I never really understood the necessity of pandering to the hard-core types, they are the type who would vote to keep a Democrat out of office, even if they have to vote for somebody they don't like.
  2. Cuba belongs in the "axis of unpleasantness" or "list of moderately annoying countries." I'm no expert on this really don't see what the big deal is there. I mean, it was pretty obvious when they were allies of the Soviets but we haven't had Soviets to worry about for almost 20 years now. Now we just kind of don't talk to them for the sake of doing it more than anything else.
  3. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 19, 2008 -> 05:38 PM) I've got family that lives right off Cumberland in Norridge. The airplanes flying right over the houses is something else. I live right in the landing path of the planes here. Honestly you'd think it was really obnoxious, and it is, but once you've lived there for a month or so it doesn't bother you so much and you don't really notice. The only time it's really bad is when you're outside talking on the phone.
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 20, 2008 -> 11:28 AM) That's what I am asking about. We can either just let people do it in each thread, like we are doing here... or, we can tell people to start a new thread for that topic. Well I think there's a difference between the post I made a few posts ago, and a full-blown partisan argument. From a mod/admin's standpoint, I don't think there is any way you can actively separate the two. I think minor challenges just go as is, but when it goes farther than a few posts someone should step in and make them take it to another thread if the poster doesn't take it upon themselves to do it. JMO. If things were to go strictly "red" and "blue" then that kind of defeat the purpose of having this section.
  5. What do we do when we see an argument in either thread that we want to challenge?
  6. Born and raised in the South suburbs and the South Side. Now I live not far from Baltimore, between there and DC. I miss Chicago but I go where the money takes me.
  7. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 20, 2008 -> 12:26 AM) Just another reminder of the position of Hamas. Elected, sure. But their goal is pretty obvious. Well obvious to everyone, but the Obama campaign who think that face to face will make any difference in hamas's view that Israel needs to be wiped off the map. Um. I'm not sure what the source of this rumor is but to my knowledge the Obama camp has never said they're going to meet with Hamas. With adversaries like Iran sure, so make of that what you will. But not terrorist groups: http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN03459104
  8. QUOTE (YASNY @ May 19, 2008 -> 10:49 AM) That's a valid argument, but it's questionable as well. Ty Cobb used to place buckets throughout the outfield, then hit baseballs INTO them in batting practice. Bigger, faster, stronger is one thing. Great hand - eye coordination is another. A great baseball player is a great baseball player regardless of era. For the purposes of this thread let us just assume that the ballplayers of the past would've benefitted equally from the advantages they have today like better nutrition, workout regimes, film study, scouting reports, and steroids. Also, if you want them on your roster, Negro Leaguers do count, but let's assume they would've still put up good stats in the majors (if slightly degraded).
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 19, 2008 -> 10:36 AM) Jermaine Dye: I love the .293 average, I even like the 6 homers, but come on, only 16 RBI as the primary #5 hitter? Unacceptable. How's JD's lack of RBI his fault? Look who hits in front of him... 2 guys you gave an F, one you gave a D. They've all sucked. When people aren't on base you can't get RBI. Even if you have a .293 average.
  10. I agree with most of the grades, I think Dotel has been a C- because he pitches like Rex Grossman plays quarterback. Really hot and really cold. It just so happens he had one of the worst outings of any of our relievers last night. I think Buehrle should be a D, the team hasn't been helping him too much. Floyd A-, his K:BB ratio is still pretty bad and that's a cause for concern. And the whole team grade I'd bump down to a C, because Konerko and Thome have really been that bad. Being the guys in this lineup that are supposed to produce runs, we probably look like a completely different team if they don't make their best Juan Uribe impressions.
  11. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 17, 2008 -> 12:06 PM) How do you like yours? I have just been with the ipod for so long, it isn't worth it time wise to change. Yet. I actually got it for my wife so I don't know. It seems like a pretty simple enough device to use. I was told the Zune was a better device than the ipod right now so I went out and got her one since she'd been screaming for an mp3 player. For myself I'll probably get the big version so I can put my whole music collection on it.
  12. Lineup: 2B – Jackie Robinson C – Yogi Berra DH – Babe Ruth CF – Willie Mays 3B – Alex Rodriguez LF – Ted Williams RF – Hank Aaron 1B – Lou Gehrig SS – Cal Ripken SP1 – Pedro Martinez SP2 – Sandy Koufax SP3 – Tom Seaver SP4 – Nolan Ryan SP5 – Satchel Paige MR: Goose Gossage SU: Dennis Eckersley CL: Mariano Rivera Bench: Ken Griffey Jr., Ty Cobb, Brooks Robinson, Ernie Banks, Carlton Fisk, Frank Thomas (homer pick) Note: I didn't mess with dead ball-era pitchers or I'd have put Cy Young and Walter Johnson as 1 and 2. So many honorable mentions and good players squeezed out I can't even name them all.
  13. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ May 16, 2008 -> 11:35 PM) My all-time lineup: 1. Ty Cobb OF 2. Rogers Hornsby 2B 3. Babe Ruth OF 4. Lou Gehrig 1B 5. Ted Williams DH 6. Willie Mays OF 7. Josh Gibson C 8. Alex Rodriguez 3B 9. Honus Wagner SS Bench: Hank Aaron Johhny Bench Rickey Henderson Juan Uribe f*** Barry Bonds We did a thread like this on another board, it was good stuff. Matter of fact, I'm going to start it now.
  14. QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 17, 2008 -> 12:38 AM) Now Dotel has taking a lot of s*** for his shaky start to the season, he's come on strong over the past few weeks though. I honestly can't remember a single bad thing being said about Linebrink. I remember a lot people being surprised by how good his stuff was, people who hadn't seem him pitch before assumed he was more of a smoke and mirrors type. I was worried about Linebrink thinking it had the potential to be a really bad contract and that he was going to fall apart in the Cell. But, if it was not, and Dotel came around, the bullpen would turn from an impossible weakness into a strength. Even though they've been pretty uneven at times (thanks MacD) I can't really complain too much about the bullpen. I guess when you've been watching the starting rotation the bullpen is a bit of a dropoff when it's really not that significant in the grand scheme of things. But if we had a real offense it wouldnt even be a concern.
  15. Gavin's really going to need to get better control of his off-speed pitches if he's going to keep this up, if not it's going to catch up with him. That had to be the flukiest 6 scoreless innings I've ever seen from a SP.
  16. Paul just looked like someone murdered his favorite puppy on his way back to the dugout.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ May 16, 2008 -> 11:35 PM) I haven't seen many bad things posted about Linebrink at all since the season started. I keep getting him and Dotel confused. They look so much alike. But I'm still pretty sure I've seen Linebrink take some knee-jerk criticism here.
  18. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 16, 2008 -> 11:33 PM) Wow, I had no clue Linerbrink's ERA was so awesome. If you were to guess it based off Soxtalk gameday posts you'd think it was in the low 6's and that he was a complete waste of money that we're stuck with now. He's generally been pretty damn effective. Of course he's had a couple bad outings but what pitcher doesn't?
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ May 16, 2008 -> 11:31 PM) Did Anderson stay in the game? Gameday had Swisher in CF last half-inning.
  20. QUOTE (YASNY @ May 16, 2008 -> 11:15 PM) ARam had a pretty good rip last at bat. He got robbed on what would've been a double down the line. Speaking of robbed they just showed the replay and holy s*** Anderson was safe by like 2 feet.
  21. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ May 16, 2008 -> 11:12 PM) jesus i just turned it on. can anyone describe A-ram's homer? Line drive rocket to LF, cleared the stands by about 8 feet or so.
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ May 16, 2008 -> 11:11 PM) Who's warming up for the Sox? Boone was warming up last inning.
  23. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 16, 2008 -> 11:08 PM) I don't see why people have been so down on Ramirez... he has so much potential, and he just showed some right there. I don't think people are "down" on him so much as they think it's a complete waste for him to be riding the bench in MLB and not getting at-bats.
  24. Konerko stealing bases, Pierzynski hitting triples... cats and dogs living together WTF
  25. That was a relatively painless inning for Gavin. He's on pace for a QS if he can keep it together.
