I'm sure there's a pretty substantial cross-section of people in this country support stuff like stop-and-frisk but they will freak the f*** out about electronic surveillance and the Patriot Act (which actually have far less direct impact on your life individually). Kinda sucks when that shoe is on your foot right? (I didn't name anyone's name on purpose, but a dog tends to holler when it's hit and so on.)

What's with this "get a better job" stuff? People (generally Baby Boomer types) say this all the time to people who didn't expect to be unemployed as long as they are or work at s*** jobs below their skill level. It's like... gee why the f*** didn't I think of that before? That's a brilliant idea. I'll just go get a job that pays me more and doesn't suck!

He also rescued a baby from an orphanage just before it collapsed and then because he had some extra time he rescued a kitten from a tree.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 01:50 PM) My most sincere apologies to TNC and all his fans. The point I am trying to make is that there needs to be more action taken and less pontificating. There are too many commentators on the left who think they know everything and express as much in constant television appearances and in columns for various "intellectual" publications. I understand there is a need for there to be intellectual debate, and I appreciate that. But there is often a level of pompousness in these writings that really bothers me. I would like to see these same folks do a ride along in some of these inner-city neighborhoods and then lecture the officer on how he is profiling...I think there is a disconnect between many of these commentators and those in the real world trying to deal with some of these issues, and I find it a bit unfair to sit up on your pulpit and criticize others, when let's face it, many of these intellectuals don't know jack s*** about the realities of what or whom they are criticizing. I'd like to see many of them do less lecturing and more doing, or else just shut the hell up. That's politics in America, man

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 01:27 PM) Well, I don't think I am "concern trolling" then. It is altogether different to suggest there needs to be an emphasis placed on getting off the sideline and taking action rather than writing fancy articles in the Atlantic Monthly that only your other friends that write in the Atlantic Monthly understand. And if you don't have the energy to actually do something about it, then maybe you're a bit of a hypocrite for spending so much time crying foul about it. Ok with all due respect this makes no sense at all. Ta-Nehisi Coates is a writer for the Athantic Monthly (or senior editor, something like that). What's he supposed to do, NOT write for the Atlantic Monthly? You just admitted you don't even know who he is, how do you know what other action he takes in addition to writing articles, i.e., doing his job?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 01:04 PM) Honestly, I can't keep up with your internet lingo. Not trying to put myself into this particular argument, but "concern trolling" has a specific meaning to it and intent behind it. When Rush Limbaugh brings up Chicago's crime rate on his show, he has no intention whatsoever of actually suggesting anything to help, he only brings it up as a means to stifle a topic of debate he doesn't like. Another example (one that I do sometimes) is a liberal talking about how Republicans shouldn't elect someone like Sanford because it undermines their "family values" platform (when in reality, they don't give a s*** and actually get off on that kind of flagrant hypocrisy).

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 12:59 PM) "political will" is sort of a irrelevant here. It was a policy enacted in NYC by NYC. It has nothing to do with Washington Democrats. NYPD can end this terrible policy at any time. And really, yeah, in THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE it's as simple as that. If you're a mayoral candidate you probably make this part of your platform.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 12:51 PM) This is oversimplification and probably the main reason why the Dems often have the better ideas, but the inability to place them into reality. So what you do is elect people at various levels who will put this agenda into a law, and for the Dems in 2006 this worked fine, in 2008 it worked even better, until the Great Sad of 2010 when they got pissy, blamed themselves as left-leaning voters tend to do, and let the Epic Conservative Freakout take control of everything, everywhere. That's the "do" part you're talking about. In the meantime, since we can't, because the average member of the House doesn't know which hole to s*** from, we talk about what we want our choice of leaders to address come the next election (for NYC, that time is not now since Bloomberg is still in office and weaseled his way into another term in the past election)

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 11:39 AM) Unclear as to the reason since it's on appeal but Von Miller is facing a 4 game suspension (I do note that's the "PED length). So it'll probably come out that he got suspended for Adderall, because the NFL has the most advanced testing regimen for Adderall and a severe Adderall abuse problem.

The radical left-winger in me says "doing something" about crime is about more than just having more cops.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 11:47 AM) But Cohen says this...he points out that there have to be other factors involved...and don't get me wrong, I don't really agree with Cohen and I said as much last week...but the article SS posted today, and many articles that these intellectuals on the left write, are fantastic at pointing out inadequacies, but not so much at bringing real, workable alternative solutions to the table. Yes, we'd love to approach crime in a manner which never suspects or inconveniences or violates anyone simply because of what others that might share something in common with them have done, or because some folks are just downright racist...but we still have to keep our streets safe, do we not? Ok, how should we do it better? Well, I think the media (god I hate invoking that phrase) tends to repeat this theme of urban blight where big cities are deteriorating centers of unmanageable crime, and the major cities like Chicago and New York are like what Detroit looked like in Robocop. So the outdated 80s era perception of everything "getting worse" seems to be what people visualize and they think we need some kind of new, innovative solutions to stop the flow of rising crime (that is actually falling). Not that I'm trying to claim there aren't problems that need to be addressed but we have to keep this in its proper perspective.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 11:29 AM) That is all fine and good...all that fancy language to describe how wrong Cohen is...tell me how to approach crime in an alternative manner! This is my issue with the far left...always pointing out the inadequacies but rarely coming up with realistic solutions...it's not enough to always point out how wrong the rest of us are if you never provide a realistic alternative... I don't think objection to "stop and frisk" is really limited to the far left - you can't tell me there's not an easy-to-see line between "common sense" which is knowing the suspect of a crime is probably black and the police responding accordingly, and treating every black person you see like they're a potential criminal. The latter is an invitation to all sorts of court-sanctioned f***ery.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 04:20 PM) If they can't file for bankruptcy... they just stop paying service on their debt. And they go into a series of ugly defaults. Loan companies sue to get their money. Detroit says, sorry, can't help you. This goes on for a while. If the state or other entity doesn't give them piles of cash (which they don't have, and it would be stupid anyway in that circumstance), then essentially, Detroit becomes a deadbeat business entity. But amazingly, since they are not a business per se, they will still keep getting revenue from taxes, and theoretically keep some services running ad infinitum. However, after some period of time, debtors will start claiming property. So Detroit starts losing physical assets, like let's say, buses and fire trucks. This just keeps going in a seriously ugly cycle, until one of the following occurs: --Fed or state government steps in AND is able to fund the city during a turn-around --Private investors "buy" the city's management and services, which I am not sure will fly legally anyway --The state of Michigan amends its constitution (the most sane option) to get rid of the absolute pension protections --A federal court finds the pension protections somehow improper or in violation of federal laws --The City of Detroit empties almost entirely, eventually leaving no city government at all, putting all that burden on the county and state There is no good ending here. The state government has had multiple opportunities over the past couple of decades to get into some sort of revenue-sharing or regional system that would've helped stop Detroit's downward spiral, and they've refused each time because they felt like Detroit wasn't their problem. Well, problem is that the bond markets are going to adjust and Michigan's rates will go up because they know Michigan didn't bother doing anything about Detroit when they had the chance. That'll be felt in their budgets. Kind of like how stupidly letting the US government default for no reason would get the US credit rating downgraded and make the rate on bonds go up.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 03:57 PM) if the bankruptcy is denied, but they literally have NO money, how will they pay the pensions? Try to get a loan? Sell junk bonds? I don't see how it would end. Anyone know? No idea. If you're working for a company when this happens you're basically f***ed. Which is why my dad has nothing to show for any of his jobs in his adult life until his 50s.

Michigan courts order the bankruptcy filing withdrawn because it's against Michigan's constitution. Next stop feds?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 03:35 PM) I just want to keep repeating it over and over and over until somebody notices! But I'm saying there should NOT be the demand. I keep reading about guys who are "untradeable." These guys are the ones fans and owners were drooling over shortly before they became untradeable. JUST SAY NO. Don't sign guys to long-term deals and maybe I can go sit in a box seat for 20 f***ing dollars and not have to pay 20 bucks to park!!!! And not pay 15 bucks for an All American hot dog and beer! Baseball was not invented as an elitist game, folks. I'm saying Israel and the Palestinians should have a peace deal, and Congress should work on the economy and address the deficit in a way that's fair to everyone, and we can buy stuff made in America and stop buying Chinese stuff, and work on terraforming Mars, and a list of a whole bunch of other things that are never going to happen

Does anyone even know what the status quo actually IS? The last time we saw this team performing at or near its peak was Game 1 of the playoffs in 2012, and the 2012 season itself was full of lockout-related anomalies.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 07:56 AM) A friend of mine linked to this story on his FB page and noted the part about the odds being 1 trillion to one to catch four foul balls in one game. I commented, "So the same odds as any fan catching one foul ball in a World Series game at Wrigley?" Not really since that wouldn't be 1:1000000000000, it'd be 1:0, undefined, you can't divide by zero

That trade probably doesn't make the Bulls any better. I guess you put Aldridge at C but that's pretty much a lateral move and now you have another hole at SG and you're forced to re-sign Deng whether you want to or not.
