QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 21, 2013 -> 10:50 PM) Ah, that was me, although on draft day, 85% of the reports that came out questioned his arm strength for the big league level and argued he'd be more likely to ultimately end up at 2B/CF. Obviously, he's worth more at SS or CF than 2B. Maybe he'll have a little Alexei Ramirez in him (starting in the OF, then moving back to SS), minus the brain cramps. Something in his favor is that he's young and his body has yet to fill out, possible that he improves his arm strength as he ages and his body matures, much like a young pitcher who is tall and skinny.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 19, 2013 -> 02:53 PM) I can;t see any way the Tigers would trade us Castellanos unless the package included Reed. I'll always trade 4 quarters for a dollar. Plus, I don't really see any of those guys coming back to hurt us too badly in the long run -
Brent Morel is very quietly having a solid season in Charlotte after a slow start. I'd like to see him get another chance with the big club after we sell off assets at the deadline. He deserves it after losing last season due to injury.

QUOTE (jthunder93 @ Jun 17, 2013 -> 04:58 PM) Well, look at the Bristol roster...7 pitchers, 1 catcher (Ayala...I assume he'll get some solid playing time.), 8 infielders, 1 outfielder, and a DH (Stoner). the DH has a drug problem, well thats just great!

The SOPs for promotion in the sox system is to bring guys up at the all star break unless they are putting up some otherworldly numbers.

Hawkins deserves more than 60 or 70 ab's to show he doesn't belong in Hi A ball. Worst case scenario is he repeats the level next year which still puts him right on track to reach the majors at 22 or 23. Same with Walker at AA. Mitchell, who knows, his speed and defense may be enough to get him a part time gig somewhere. I doubt that it'll be in chicago though.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 29, 2013 -> 06:49 PM) Is he suppose to be a good fielding catcher?? He is batting .320 in AA ball. And he is only 22. That sounds promising. He has a cannon for an arm, he shuts the running game down

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 21, 2013 -> 05:58 PM) I need my Jump to Conclusions mat. It would be this mat that you put on the floor with different conclusions on it that you could jump to...

QUOTE (daggins @ May 16, 2013 -> 05:50 PM) Add a homer to that, his 10th. What the hell has gotten in to Josh Phegley? I hate to be the guy to bring it up, but whenever someone completely breaks out I always have to wonder if he's maybe artificially augmenting his performance if you know what I mean. I obviously hope that he's just finally gotten healthy but still... you never know.

I say we sign him just for the potential to shout VIVA ZAPATA! every time he comes to the plate or makes a play.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 1, 2013 -> 07:00 AM) That seems overly harsh to me. You have to have some perspective here - and understand he's just being realistic. He's going to turn 25 this September, and likely would miss all this season. He'd be 25 when he got going again, with only a partial season worth of play in rookie ball under his belt, and turn 26 during what might be his first full season in pro ball. After two surgeries. To say he'd have an extremely long shot to ever make it at that point, would be an understatement. Also, not to diminish your experiences, but you are not a professional athlete. The situations are very different. This guy isn't giving up on rehab, he's having to make a decision about his career. Im just saying that he has to rehab his knee one way or the other, not to mention the fact that he could have had a top notch team of trainers helping him along the way. Most people, as was my experience, have to take their own initiative when rehabbing and only get to go to physical therapy a few times a week. He could get therapy on it every day if he wanted and come back strong and healthy, his knee is already trashed so take advantage of your situation, build it back up and come back with some toughness about the situation. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 06:18 AM) A little more data on this... the guy was drafted, had TJ on his elbow shortly after, missed all of 2011, pitched in limited action in 2012. Then apparently, this year, on the FIRST DAY of workouts, he blew out his knee. When faced with the prospect of another surgery, another year of rehab, etc., he decided to retire. Can't really blame him. Feel awful for the guy. Gotta have more mental toughness than that. Injuries are just part of the deal when you play sports. I've blown out both knees in the past 5 years so I know what it's like and I'll tell you that feeling sorry for yourself and quitting doesn't help you heal any faster.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 02:40 PM) Well, then you do it after your current, cheaper and somewhat promising options fail, not in advance of it. Besides, who's to say there won't be another Lohse-like player next year? It's one thing to stay ahead of your looming problems. It's another to cause more problems by tying up money when you don't need to. Also, the inability to afford $12M doesn't mean you need to rebuild. That's a non-sequitur. You can max out your budget with an awful team or a great one. There are always Lohse type players available to sign, I think of guys like Carlos Silva, Javier Vasquez, Edwin Jackson, and many more. Guys who parlay a decent season and "potential" into these 10 mil+ per season contracts. They almost never work out, and Id be more than happy to spend that money on a better 3B, a younger catcher, first baseman or any of a litany of other positions where we actually need help as opposed to an older pitcher who may or may not even be an upgrade over who we already have in Santiago/Quintana. Id say that absolute best case scenario Lohse gives you 2 wins more this year than those two. Is that really worth the extra 11.5 million? I think not. Just because you can afford to spend the money doesn't mean that you should.

Being born in Oregon, we don't have any pro sports teams other than the blazers, everyone else around here just adopts the seattle teams but I rebelled against that and had to go out of region to find teams to root for. Then I developed my first man crush with Frank Thomas as an 11 year old in 1992 and I've been a Sox guy ever since.

Man crush on Hawkins. With how quick we moved him up to low a ball I would have been satisfied it he'd just managed to not embarrass himself, but he's been just killing it since his promotion. Good K rates, lots of XBHs. I'm very excited to see what he does in a full season. Seems like he has the ability to make adjustments very quickly and his physical tools are obvious. Havent been this excited about a prospect since Gordon got drafted.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 18, 2012 -> 09:13 AM) Cool name. There's that. Might as well be HamLET, but Hanlet's close to Hanley, so there's hope in that direction. "This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man".

What a surprise, guess the team is finally willing to spend at least a little more on the draft instead of going cheap for so long.
