  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 08:52 AM) If Becks had made the team out of ST...he'd hit FA one full year earlier. ding ding ding!
  2. QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 08:34 AM) Minus JorDanks, I agree. The guy and his brother ditched Boras for us and I think that deserves respect. He also will solve a much needed spot in the future. Yes, we have no other CF spects who will be ready to contribue anytime soon. We need him around, mitchell is 2 years away minimum and may not even be a CF.
  3. QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 05:25 PM) that BHam link is to the charlotte game muwahahaha!
  4. Charlotte B-Ham W-S Kanny Bristol Holmberg with 4 scoreless innings so far, game in a weather delay GF game starts at 9 ET
  5. The "final solution" to our misguided drafts of the early to mid 2000's? Is that what you're getting at here?
  6. Can't believe how cheap he was, that's a big surprise. Hopefully he gets down to Bristol in the next day or two and gets his career going.
  7. Depends, if we lose the next couple games and the tigres win, we might trade away a bullpen arm or a backup OF like BA/Wise, maybe one of our extra SP's like Colon, if the oppo happens then we might add a small piece like a 4th OF who can hit better than Dweezy. Either way I'd be surprised to see a big move take place. IMO, we should trade off one of our extra SP's, between Colon, Richard, Torres we have one too many 5th starters/ Long relievers, i'd like to see Colon moved and go with the kids, let them develop.
  8. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 10:30 PM) I'm not saying that Flowers won't be good, but I think we'll miss AJ when he's gone. Unless TF kills it we're definitely going to miss him. He calls a hell of a game, plays good D (bad at throwing out runners but good at the other aspects) hits near 300 with 15hr a season. Not too damn many catchers in the league that can do that. His game calling is very underrated too. Anyone remember how much better our pitchers got when he arrived? He's one of the best catchers in the game and though he is a bit of a character his passion, hustle, and smarts get under the skin of the opposition much more than it does his teammates. The guy is a gamer and I love him.
  9. Video of it on MLB.com, didn't look like a big deal, just some tempers boiling over on a team that is playing bad at a pretty bad time.
  10. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 08:03 PM) It ain't looking good, that's for sure. Minus Mitchell, this draft looks very very weak. Hopefully Thompson is a player. However, two players can make a draft, but it would nice to add to our depth and give us some trading chips. WAAAAAYYYY too early to make statements about our draft like that. we won't know anything for at least a couple years, who knows how Heidenreich, Thompson, Holmberg, Jones(maybe) will develop not to mention several other project players or HSers we drafted. We'll see how these guys are playing in 2011 and then make some assessments.
  11. They could have him working on just sitting next to the coaches during the games to learn about what is happening on the field, i.e. pitch selection, situational plays, defensive lineups etc... to give him a better idea how to manage a game behind the plate.
  12. Cole Armstrong with a walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth. His eighth on the season, his bat is coming around after a very poor start.
  13. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 05:38 PM) At this point I think the Sox are going to let Shoemaker play out his hit streak. He's at 28. Wonder what the record hit streak is to start a pro career. He's got to be close if he doesn't already have it, he'll be a trivia answer at the least if he does nothing else with his life/career.
  14. Charlotte Flowers not in the lineup today, Carlos Torres dealing after his demotion Birmingham loses 4-3 Shirek loses after just one bad inning. W-S Kanny game is in a weather delay Kanny v Rome Dex Carter with the start Bristol Guess who has another hit, a HR to be exact, maybe time for a promotion? G-F
  15. I watched a great scouting video on him from college and his FB had crazy movement and sink, boring in hard on righties and away from lefties.
  16. QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:40 PM) Good article. Answers the question of why he's still in Kanny... With that level of succes and considering his age, 22, Carter would seem like a prime candidate for promotion. By comparison, his ex-ODU teammate and fellow White Sox draftee, righthander Dan Hudson, also started the season in Kannapolis but has already reached Double-A, going 9-5, 2.61 in the process. But the biggest separator between the two is in the quality their changeups. When he commands them, Carter’s fastball and curveball are more than enough to succeed against Sally League hitters. His fastball has touched 94 mph and sits mostly 90-92, and he complements it with a downer curveball that gets some side-to-side movement as well. The changeup is the pitch he needs most to develop further if he’s going to succeed at higher levels. "We’re trying to develop the changeup more," Owens said. "It’s become a pretty decent pitch. We’ve tried it with different grips and whatnot, and I think he’s come up with something that he likes now. He feels comfortable. He’s been able to soften it up." Carter’s changeup was coming in at a firm 83-85 mph earlier in the season, but Owens said they’ve lowered that figure to 78-80 now. Carter has the added advantage of standing 6-foot-6, enabling him to generate a good downhill plane for all his pitches, though issues with staying on a straight line to the plate still creep in from time to time. Given the assets he already has, it’s not hard to imagine Carter having success at higher levels if his changeup progresses, a message Owens stresses to Carter and any other young starter. "You have to get them to buy into the fact that they cannot move on, if they’re going to start, and just have two pitches," Owens said. "In High A, Double-A or Triple-A, if they go to add a changeup then, it’s going to be much more difficult on them than if they can go ahead and develop it here and now. "It’s a pitch they’re going to need. To turn a lineup over as often as a starter is going to need to turn a lineup over, he’s going to need a changeup to do it, to be successful." Thats pretty much what i thought. Don't rush the kid, he's still young, let him develop that change and watch him scoot right through the system.
  17. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 01:16 PM) thanks MLB.tv btw for letting me see that. +1. I live on the west coast, thought i was going to have to just watch the game cast. so glad i got to watch the d wise catch to save the pg, nh, and the so.
  18. QUOTE (tommy @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 03:05 PM) QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 10:12 AM) i'd say more like 1.000 with that pic. Butterface on the left, id still hit it tho
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 10:03 PM) Forgot about Garland. He's throwing the ball pretty well now, but I want nothing to do with him. If KW trades for a starter, it needs to be someone we know is an upgrade over our 5 main guys. Yeah I can't see us bringing Garland back. I don't feel that he'd be any upgrade over Richard/Colon or Torres who pitched well today.
  20. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 12:31 PM) Last season, he struck out 177 times in 127 games (468 AB). THe kids got power, but he's all or nothing. Lets assume he's a future #4 hitter. Projecting out to about 150 games, that's 209 Ks and 31 HRs in roughly 706 plate appearances. That was last year as a 19 year old playing low-a ball with 21/22 year olds. His K rate was 37.8% and BB rate 8.6%, both bad numbers no doubt, this season his K rate is 36.7%, a marginal improvement only, but his BB rate is 15% this year which is a good jump, he's also has a BA that is 10 points higher and has increased his slugging % by almost 70 points. His plate discipline and pitch recognition have obviously improved considerably and given enough time could continue to improve a la Brandon Allen who was a K machine in his earlier days and greatly improved to the point that his plate discipline was an asset when we traded him.
  21. Mitchell with a double, promote him!!!
  22. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 04:50 PM) Jared got a base hit in his first at-bat. Nice. He had a GO in his next AB- I hate him
  23. Charlotte v Norfolk- gm 1 Charlotte v Norfolk- gm 2 B Ham v Mobile W-S has the day off Kanny v Charleston Sauer getting the start Bristol v Bluefield G-F v Ogden
  24. 2 questions 1. Who is Federowicz and what does he bring to the table by comparison? 2. What has Phegley done to make him look good because his numbers aren't so hot right now (not that numbers are everything)?
  25. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 12:16 AM) Disappointing that not only is he not advancing from a year ago, but he is down a level from a year ago. I think that it was pretty evident that he was in over his head in Bristol last season, maybe he'll get to move back up at some point this season though.
