  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 06:59 PM) Esteban Yan? He actually got a mention in a Simpsons episode. Which one? I'm a big time Simpson's fan and I can't ever remember hearing him mentioned.
  2. Nothing is written in ink yet but it is definitely a good sign that he's fired Boras. It's also good that John fired him too, gives us a better chance at signing him to a good deal to buy out his arb years plus a team option for a couple years after arb
  3. If he's available to sign as a free agent I think that the fact that we already have two cubans on the team with the same agent gives us an automatic leg up on the rest of the MLB. If he's a legit prospect and his demands aren't outrageous then we need to make a play for him. We coughed up almost 5 million to sign Alexi, I don't see why we wouldn't do a similar deal to get this kid.
  4. Rumor making the rounds right now is that his agent told all MLB teams that if they weren't going to give him first round money then he'd just go back to college. Who know if this is true but that's what i heard
  5. If we sign Long I got dibs on his AAP. I'm a Raiders fan and like that whole family
  6. thats too bad, i was hoping that he could figure it out and cut his strikeout rate down a bit. he had some serious power
  7. QUOTE (BFirebird @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 10:36 AM) How many of these later round picks actually sign? I have never really paid attention to the draft and wondered how many sign compared to either go to college or go back to college. it all depends on the player and what he wants. However i can say that if it were impossible to sign any of these HS players contemplating college then no team would draft them. they are signable, just depends on what they are looking for, i.e. right organization, big money, coaches, personal connections, etc...
  8. I've been reading about long for a while now because I like to do a lot of research for the NFL draft and read about his brother. This is definitely a high reward type player who slipped b/c of his signability. He has excellent bloodlines and is super-athletic for a guy his size. I could really see him turning into a feared hitter and honestly looking 5 years down the road I'll be surprised if he doesn't make it to the bigs. He's got fantastic genetics, his dad obviously HOF pro football player, his mom was an olympic athlete I believe, and his brother is an elite athlete. On top of that he's got the same work ethic as his father and older brother. I absolutely love this pick. I know we still have to sign him but this could be the steal of the draft so far
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 07:57 AM) Even though I don't think he's any special, I love the Danks pick. If nothing else, it will shut up a lot of people on here. agreed
  10. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 05:24 PM) If Kenny Williams Jr. ever sniffs the big leagues, I'll f***ing kiss your balls. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!! funniest thing I've heard or read all day long. thanks
  11. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 11:24 AM) I'd guess he neglects the lower half of his body in workouts. He really is a disgusting fat body. Couldn't even run straight in the videos featured on ESPN. that's not how it works. you only have legs like that through pure genetics. you don't get your legs smaller by working them out all the time, in fact, his legs could be so big because he works them hard but it's not just laziness
  12. oakland really overdrafted with Weeks. he's like a 2b version of Juan Pierre, all speed and little else
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 11:18 AM) How is Beckham in the speed department? How does he compare to the NL East shortstops in that sense? his writeup says that he's got above average speed and good baserunning instincts
  14. I'm cool with Beckham though I would've preferred Crow. The only person I really didn't want us to take is Castro. damn commie pinko
  15. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) IIRC, the slotting system was not in existence for the Borchard pick. That said, I didn't follow the draft at that time so I can't comment on that fully. However, after that failed pick the Sox have been afraid of going out and putting out big bucks on a prospect. They can put it down and rationalize it anyway they want, but they have went with the easy sign since that point in time. In there defense, most of the time they pick (which is usually in the teens & twenties) has been at a point where typically guys grade out relatively similarly. not saying that the slotting system was in place but we did pay a very large bonus, equivalent at the time to going over slot
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 10:28 AM) but its well known Reinsdorf refuses to go above slot money (and I have a problem with that approach because I think its fiscally smart to go above smart money because in the long term, with proper scouting, it gives you more good prospects. Not necessarily true. We went well over slot with Joe Borchard (I think we also did with Nevin Griffith) the team's philosophy on this issue is that they'll pay more if the player is really worth it but if they see two players who grade out similarly but one want slot money and the other wants 2-3 million more than slot then they'll take the player who's a little cheaper and more worth the money
  17. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 09:46 AM) Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention. I've just been handed an urgent and horrifying news story. I need all of you, to stop what you're doing and listen. Cannonball! ha!
  18. Walker had some other comments about the situation that I read in an ESPN article Walker met team chairman Jerry Reinsdorf on Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune, and spent much of the day wondering about his employment status. "I've never quit anything in my life," Walker told the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday. "I'll leave it at that. I have too much respect for Jerry Reinsdorf and what he's done for me. He's a good man and a good friend and he wants me to keep fighting, so I'm going to. "There's some things I'd like to say, but I'm not going to say them. I'm going to keep my mouth shut and earn my money he's paying me. And if anybody doesn't like it, tough." I've been thinking for a while that he was a lame-ass and needed to be fired but after reading the comments he made I have a lot more respect for him. Not saying that he shouldn't be fired but I have major respect for the way he's handled this situation
  19. Met lots of football and basketball players when I went to the U of O. Some of the bigger names I met, Haloti Ngata (plays for the ravens) Joey Harrington, Reuben Droughns, Basketball players- Freddy Jones- plays for the Knicks, Luke Ridinour- Sonics , and had a beer with Luke Jackson- lottery pick by the Cavs in '05, now in the NBDL
  20. From what I've been reading Beckham has a serious hitch in his swing and isn't terribly athletic, that's kinda scares me off of taking him at #8. It seems like we might have a shot at any one of Skipworth, Hosmer, Smoak, or Crow. I'd be happy with any one of those picks, my top pick out of the four would be Hosmer. He's got plus plus power potential, has a cannon arm and good athleticism. If he slides to us and we pass on him for someone we can pay slot money to I'll be pissed
  21. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 08:25 PM) Seriously, when does Cook go up to AAA? With his age, we need to start to advance him as much as possible. We can't baby him and bring him up at age 29, it won't do much good. He needs to be in AAA soon, with a September call-up, and a chance for a roster spot next spring. i've been saying the same thing for a while now, maybe the White Sox brass doesn't think that he's a prospect but at least give him a chance, there's nothing more that he can prove at AA
  22. Winson-Salem wins 4-3 Retheford goes yard for second day in a row 11 hr on the season boxscore B-Ham wins 7-4 David Cook homers #11 on season OPS up to 1.080 Link with his 15th save on the season his era is at 1.96. Nice pickup in exchange for Mackowiak boxscore Charlotte wins 8-2 Egbert has a nice game 7.0 1 ER 0BB 4K Russell goes 2 IP and only give up one hit, his ERA down to 1.73 boxscore Kanny loses 7-6 Estill gets his first BB of the season to go with 15K's boxscore
  23. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 1, 2008 -> 05:03 AM) Alvarez could easily be the pick. Not all teams are sold on his defensive ability at third, and could be moved to LF or 1B. i stand corrected
  24. Whoever had TB is an idiot. They just signed Longoria to a 6 year deal and Alvarez wants a major league contract. They will NOT take Alvarez, nothing is more clear than that
