  1. QUOTE (scenario @ Jan 24, 2009 -> 08:10 PM) I wouldn't be so quick to label Cunningham as a 4th OF type. He's only 22 and absolutely destroyed minor league pitching the last two years. Given Oakland's glut in the outfield maybe KW can find a way to get him back. I'd be pretty happy to stick him in left in 2010... after Dye leaves and Q moves to right. He's their 3rd best prospect next to Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson and their top hitting prospect. He likely wouldn't come very cheap.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 22, 2009 -> 10:52 AM) That would actually be a really interesting study. Take a few given years, and look at where the Top 100 prospects ended up, versus all the rest. See which ones succeeded, by some basic measures (games played, years in majors, basic offensive/defensive/pitching stats). I'd bet that if you look at which players, for example, managed to play full time in the majors for at least a few years, that you'd have just as many outside the top 100 as inside of it. But I do not have this data, so its just a guess. Also, I am certainly not saying that the CHANCES of any given player in the top 100 are less or the same as those below. The chances are higher. But its not some on-and-off thing, is what I am trying to say. Player A who is #50 on that list in a given year may have a 70% chance, and some player that would be around #150 may have a 30% chance. And since there are so many players outside the top 100, versus in it, if you add up the partials, the total for the below group might be higher. Actually, minorleagueball.com did this with the 2004 class recently. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2009/1/16/7...ching-prospects http://www.minorleagueball.com/2009/1/15/7...ing-prospects-o
  3. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 06:58 PM) GMAB, its a few weeks. They are going to spend the next 6 months together. Doesn't matter a whole lot, but I think it makes sense to create some chemistry between A.J. and the new guys before the season rather than during.
  4. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 06:41 PM) I don't like Danks being a part of it...not at all. Agreed. I don't like A.J. being a part of it either. He now has no chance of building good relationships with our new pitchers in ST.
  5. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 02:42 PM) Speaking of Beckham... Lots of people hope he'll be an impact player when he gets called up to the MLB. My question is: Do people see him being an impact rookie like Ryan Braun, Jay Bruce, and Evan Longoria? Or is he another first round draft pick that we're hopeful on like we were with Joe Borchard and Brian Anderson? I'm trying to figure out how much of an impact people on this board can see Beckham having, and if people think he might be of the same caliber of Braun/Bruce/Longoria, then that'd be eff-ing sweet. I can see him having a Longoria type of impact in his first full year.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 18, 2009 -> 11:10 PM) Yeah, but I don't think he's made an appearance in the big leagues yet has he? No, he hasn't.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 18, 2009 -> 11:02 PM) Is Marquez on the 40 man yet? He may not have started his arbitration clock yet, that might be why. Marquez is on the 40 man roster. Link

Aaron Poreda Relievers Closer - Bobby Jenks Octavio Dotel Scott Linebrink Matt Thornton D.J. Carrasco Ehren Wasserman Adam Russell Kelvin Jimenez I'm a little surprised that Betemit is penciled in at 3rd and that Anderson is penciled in at CF considering the organization's fetish for Owens. No chance of Marquez as a starter? I know that we still have a few months to go but with the way KW talks about Marquez you'd figure he'd be somewhere on the SP depth chart.
  9. I would have much preferred if we signed Freddy. We've shared more memories with Freddy and he's obviously in better shape. Realistically, neither Freddy or Colon will pitch the entire season (you'd be lucky to get half a season out of either). I can't imagine Freddy was asking for much more than Colon.
  10. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 07:21 PM) Looks like our pitching staff is complete. Starters (5) Buerhle Danks Floyd Colon Marquez Bullpen(7) Jenks Linebrink Dotel (kids from the yankmees) Thornton Richard Poreda I think there is no way in hell the Sox will take two lefty starters and convert them both into relievers in the same off-season.
  11. I'm really surprised that the Twins aren't projected to take first in our division.
  12. Mauer is easily one of the best hitters in baseball. Mauer + Morneau >>> CQ + Dye
  13. 30 teams, 5x5 scoring, prospects, contracts, and it will be free. PM me with possible interest.
  14. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 10:33 PM) i know it's tough for all to get past the pitcherness of Floyd but dont you trade a non-special player for a special one? Roberts' age comes into play, but he's not that old either. i mean, either someone wants him or they dont..and if yr like that, then it means you never wanted Furcal or Hudson either. Roberts still fits in with the core we have... which is Alexei and CQ, guys about to enter the prime years. Pitching would remain the problem that it currently is. Either way we need to acquire SP and count on youngsters steppin up You don't consider Gavin Floyd to be a special player???
  15. QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 07:03 PM) When i read this i threw up a little bit in my mouth. No way would I do that deal, even straight up let alone include more pieces as the article says. Another 3-4 years of Gavin for one of a 30 year old roberts who is about to get really expensive and could start losing his speed at any point now. NO f***ING WAY!!! Exactly what I was thinking.
  16. It'd be fun to see Crede reunited with Rowand. Hell, if we trade Konerko to the Giants (assuming that Rowand isn't part of the return) they can have an nice little fiesta in Frisco.
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 12:02 AM) Getz should be hitting second. I second that motion.
  18. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jan 1, 2009 -> 10:01 PM) And that my folks is an 81-win team at best. There is no way the bottom two of our rotation as currently constructed will allow us to be anything more. I am not pessimistic, just a realist basing off last year's numbers from the two. Marquez sucked in AAA and Richard sucked in the majors. Expecting anything more than 8-10 wins and a 5.00 ERA is foolish. I agree with you on everything except the Clayton Richard part. He didn't suck the entire time he was with the team. He started off pretty shaky, clearly has a lot to work on, but he pitched great in the playoffs. That was encouraging for me to see from a rookie.

  20. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 1, 2009 -> 09:04 PM) I hate Dish Network. I feel duped. I need to find a loophole out of my contract and go to Direct TV. Agreed. When I woke up this morning and remembered that the MLB Network launches today, I nearly cried.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 31, 2008 -> 01:54 AM) Taveras' deal is worth $6.25MM over two years, according to our old friend Hal McCoy. WOW. That's more than we are paying Alexei Ramirez for four seasons. (And I say this keeping in mind how much we've been paying Uribe the last couple of seasons). Maybe KW was sniffing around at some point...but I'm sure he wasn't willing to pony up that kind of money. Interesting (VERY!) move by the Reds to shell out that kind of cash when they supposedly can't afford Jermaine Dye. If that was the option he was presented, even Jerry Owens looks attractive in comparison. S***! I was expecting about $2.25-$3 million over two years.
  22. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 11:25 PM) Agreed, Tom’s an excellent resource, but in no way is he an insider. Any opinion he has is based on informed conjecture so, we here at Soxtalk are on even ground with him. If you're referring to the guy from MLBTR, his name's Tim.
  23. QUOTE (forrestg @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 06:07 PM) .......... sidenote there is some fact that Fidel Castro actually had major league ambitions.. I guess he wasn't good enough.. I guess he has been trying to get even ever since. I heard that Castro wanted to play in the Majors too. I read that he almost tried out for either the Yankees or Senators but was turned down because he sucked. It's been debunked as a myth though stating that he was never good enough and didn't even make his college team at the University of Havana.
