Horrible pick. We'll be regretting this in a few years when Smoak is tearing it up.
-
Could you imagine Hamilton AND Smoak in the same lineup?

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:47 PM) If we take Beckham I'm going to throw-up all over my keyboard. I honestly think I might too.
-
Damnit....question is, do we take G-Beck or Smoak now?
-
YES! Smoak likely to fall to us now...
-
Hosmer #3 to KC.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:26 AM) One time. You are correct.

QUOTE (JDsDirtySox @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 10:32 PM) Former White Sox OF Daryl Boston. He is the Sox Roving OF Instructor and has been with the big club for a couple of weeks now. Harold probably got tired and went home. Boston was there yesterday as well.

Who's #17 filling in for Baines as 1st base coach?

QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 05:30 PM) BP has a mock up. Take a look: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=7615 8. Chicago White Sox The White Sox would love to get a shortstop like Gordon Beckham into their system, but with him off of the board, they’ll turn to one of the many slugging first basemen from the college ranks. The obvious candidates are Alonso and Smoak, with the longstanding rumor about Arizona State’s Brett Wallace as a dark horse beginning to die out over the last week. Currently there is a split in house as to which is the superior prospect, Alonso or Smoak, but perhaps what is most telling is that during last weekend’s conference tournaments, Kenny Williams went to the SEC games to see Smoak, and not the ACC to see Alonso. That could mean nothing, or it could mean everything, but the general consensus in the industry is that Smoak is the better talent. Selection: Justin Smoak, 1B, South Carolina I would absolutely love that pick.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 05:07 PM) I have a bad feeling we'll pass on Crow. I hope the only reason we would pass up Crow would be to take one of the following if available: Smoak, Hosmer, T-Beckham, Alvarez, Skipworth, or Posey....but knowing Kenny we'll pass up Smoak, Skipworth, and Crow to grab future HOFer, Jason Castro.

per Johnathon Mayo http://draft.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/06/latest_buzz.html
-
In his entire high school career, how many times did Joe Mauer strike out?
-
Looks like the Reds won't be taking Crow. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, they've narrowed it down to: Matusz, Posey, G-Beck, and Alonso. http://beta.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/s....cincinnati.com

1. Hosmer/Smoak 2. Posey/Skipworth 3. Alonso/Crow

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 10:52 AM) The Beckham pick is based on need, and really there isn't a whole lot of difference b/w the likes of Beckham, Smoak and Skipworth. So that's the main logical argument I can think of, but I would be annoyed if we didn't take either Skipworth or Smoak if they were still on the board. Maybe the Sox think Beckham can rise quickly through their system and be ready to contribute in 2010 at some point? Wouldn't a Smoak pick be based on need as well? If Thome retires after this year or when his contract runs out after next year, and Crede leaves, who would we have to fill the 1B/DH type need? We already have Alexei as a possibility at SS when O-Cab leaves, Getz, Richar, and Ozuna as other MI options. IMO, Beckham will never do much. I also think the #8 pick is starting to become a curse. Check the #8 picks since 2000, no team changing players in there.

QUOTE (Steff @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 10:47 AM) Just signed to a 1 year deal. Can he catch lightening in a bottle twice... Link?

Johnathon Mayo's most recent mock: What I don't understand in his mock is if he has Skipworth AND Smoak being chosen after us, why wouldn't we take one of them instead of G-Beck?

Juan Uribe - After a Sox game that he didn't play in. He was driving next to us in his black BMW and we saw people yelling at him so we moved to see who it was and what do ya know, Juan Uribe. I take it he was driving to the airport.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 12:36 PM) You wouldnt move Contreras for the right piece? He keeps going like this, he'll have some serious value at deadline. And the youth movement would remain intact. And the guy leaving is turning 50 soon. No I wouldn't trade Contreras. He's the best and most consistent starter we've had this season. He's got huge value right now, sure, but why would you trade our top starter right now, seeing as we're still in 1st?
-
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 12:30 PM) I'm not talking about acquiring a savior. Trade a starter for an OBP guy. Solidify the top of the order. Get someone who can hit in situations. Before magma erupts out of my brain. I think teams would want Floyd, I'd be interested to see how much. Between him and Danks there's no question who I'd rather let go of. I wouldnt be opposed to trading one of the setup guys for a hitter, if that kind of weird deal were somehow made possible. Why on earth would you want to let go of any of the starters except MB? Don't fix something that isn't broken...the pitching isn't broken, the offense is. Trade a vet slugger or package of minor leaguers for at least some half-way decent.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 12:16 PM) I see so many people suggesting that calling up Getz or releasing Uribe is the way to go. Unless our two "main" players get it going, I can't see this team making the playoffs. I don't think KW or Ozzie will stop playing those two guys. My problem with releasing Uribe is that he's still set to be a Type B FA after this season. Why not just keep him on as a bench player seeing limited playing time, and pick up another draft pick next year?

QUOTE (fathom @ May 31, 2008 -> 03:46 PM) As of yesterday, the Rays are leaning towards taking T. Beckham. He's got a pretty arrogant father though. He said that there was no way his son doesn't get picked within the top 2 picks. That can easily change though, if Posey went to Tampa and Alvarez to Pittsburgh.
