QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 08:09 AM) Based on what? The fact he's never played there before? And it's a good thing we didn't get a "crappy pen arm" in relief then. Based on his athleticism.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Aug 23, 2009 -> 09:18 PM) Much worse? Brandon Allen is a better hitter than Chris Young will ever be, and the Javy deal was a fair trade talent-for-talent at the time. Brandon Allen for Tony Pena seems like a major overpayment to me. I guess we'll have to see, but considering Allen's ceiling FAAAAAAR outweighs that of Pena, it's a major risk. I hate the deal and I hated it the second it was made. Not to mention he could have been a starting 1B/corner OF/DH for us next year. Young, athletic, position player >>>>>>> crappy 'pen arm.

QUOTE (Fotop @ Aug 17, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) Highly doubtful...unless I guess there's a loophole of Boras being his "advisor" and not his actual agent but I doubt the NCAA still considers him an amateur. He'd likely take the Aaron Crow route. I've also heard Japan as a possible destination should he not sign.

QUOTE (JackTalkThai @ Aug 17, 2009 -> 02:44 PM) The Tigers acquire Aubrey Huff. This deserves its own thread. Could be a potentially huge move.

Maybe we just don't have the money to spend on these guys due to us taking on Peavy and Rios' contracts? Who knows.
-
I don't get why Strasburg wouldn't sign. It does no good for him whatsoever. He's not going to get more money in next year's draft, so he might as well just sign.

Flowers voted Southern League's best defensive catcher

Awesome news. -
Porcello is a f****** hothead. He was screaming his head off at the umpires on his way back to the dugout after he was ejected.

QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 06:06 PM) I wouldn't be surprised to see Konerko moved and Dye re-signed at a cheaper rate to play 1b. Send him in a package to SF for Sanchez and Brian Wilson. Sanchez could be either a candidate for the 5th starter or a bullpen arm. Wilson could either allow the Sox to move Jenks or have a lights outs 7-8-9 combo of Thornton, Wilson, Jenks. Konerko's freed up money could be used for Figgins. As for Thome, i think they'll bring him back at a reduced rate as well but i'd rather have Hank Blalock assuming the LH power hitter role. But i can't see KW signing Figgins and Blalock. I think it will be one of those two though. As far as the #5 starter spot goes, Freddy Garcia or another veteran (Duscherer) could be used to fill that spot until Hudson is ready. My lineup for 2010: LF-Figgins 3B-Beckham CF-Rios DH-Thome 1B-Dye RF-Quentin C-AJ SS-Ramirez 2B-Getz bench-Flowers, Nix, Wise, Kotsay SP-Peavy SP-Buehrle SP-Floyd SP-Danks SP-Duscherer RP-Linebrink RP-Sanchez RP-Pena RP-Nunez RP-Thornton RP-Wilson CL-Jenks If Flowers is in the Bigs, he won't be riding the bench.

Can anybody see his release soon? Sure, small sample size of only 9 games at Charlotte, but still already 4 errors and batting .171. His offensive numbers are as follows: AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS .171 9 35 2 6 0 0 1 2 9 2 7 1 0 .237 .257 .494 That is disgusting.

I just realized, how is taking on the Rios/Peavy money going to affect how we spend on the draft in the next few years? I don't want any more low-upside college arms (Broadway, McCulloch) because we have to budget more carefully in the upcoming drafts...

QUOTE (beautox @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 05:24 PM) First thing i would do if i was KW in the offseason is the following. Buy out Dye and offer ARB, chances are he turns it down and goes for one more multi year deal before calling it a career and if not no Harm no Foul. Off ARB to Dotel, the market for relivers this year looks to be thin, if he accepts we keep depth in our bullpen and if not we get potential picks. Sign Jim Thome to a one year deal with a club option for '11 4m for each year with incentives to make it up to 12m with a 500 or 800k buy out If Dye Declines and Bobby Abreu hits the market offer him a two year deal similar to Thomes, If Dye declines and Abreu isn't available offer podsednik a 1 year deal as a stop gap for Danks/Mitchell. Keep AJ and Jenks unless you can get a good return on them. Ideal Line up. 2010 2011 2012 L Abreu LF/RF L Getz 2B L Getz OF R Rios CF R Rios CF R Rios OF R Beckham 3B R Beckham 3B R Beckham 3B R Quentin RF/LF R Quentin RF/LF R Quentin DH L Thome DH L Abreu DH L Danks OF R Konerko 1B R Flowers C R Flowers C L Pierzynski C R Viciedo 1B R Viciedo 1B R Ramirez SS R Ramirez SS R Ramirez SS L Getz 2B L Danks RF/LF L Mitchell OF SP Buehrle SP Peavy SP Floyd SP Danks SP Hudson CL Jenks SU Thornton SU Pena MR Linebrink MR Nunez/Torres LO ? LR Carrasco We have no 2B in 2012, FYI. Why does Danks become a middle-of-the-order guy? He doesn't have much power. IMO, Getz will never bat lead off over Mitchell or Danks. Mitchell and Danks will probably both have higher OBP than Getz at the ML level.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 04:21 PM) It qualifies as one of his worst because KW, quite frankly, doesn't have too many "worsts". I'm not losing any sleep over what we gave up, but Swisher was still a major failure here. Very good point.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 04:12 PM) My top 10, excluding extensions: 1. Jermaine Dye for 2 years, 10.15 million 2. Loaiza dealt for Jose Contreras 3. Loaiza on a minor league contract 4. Acquiring Bobby Jenks off waivers 5. Signing AJP to a 3 year deal 6. Gracia for Floyd 7. BMac for Danks 8. Olivo, Morse, Reed for Ben Davis and Freddy Garcia 9. Aaron Rowand and company for Jim Thome 10. The drafting and handling of one Gordon Beckham. Should be making it's way to number 1 soon enough. Other favorites include Pods both times around, Borchard for Thorton, Aaron Miles for Juan Uribe, and getting Jurassic the 2nd time around (sure he was a terrible three hitter, but he was our terrible 3 hitter for a time on a World Championship team). His worst: 1. Kip Wells, Sean Lowe, and Josh Fogg for Todd Ritchie 2. Ryan Sweeney, Gio Gonzalez and Fautino de los Santos for Nick Swisher Off the top of my head, these would be the only two you could classify as very bad. How would you classify this as one of his worst? Sweeney is always hurt and does nothing when he isn't. DLS is hurt. Gio is still young and has some solid promise. Book's still open on this one though.

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 03:55 PM) Jenks off of waivers. A.J. off of waivers. Loaiza off the scrapheap. I know Jenks was off of waivers but wasn't A.J. signed as a FA?

Brandon McCarthy and David Paisano for John Danks, Nick Masset, and Jacob Rasner. Love me some Johnny Danks.

Just a little Kenny Williams appreciation thread...

I love Kenny Williams. He's got the biggest stones in all of baseball. -
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 01:10 PM) And we will replace them with the youth of Bobby Abreu? Bobby Abreu still plays like he's 28.
-
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 01:49 PM) As far as this year, I am intrigued by the following scenario: Pods starts in RF, with Rios in CF. Dye on the bench. Getz is still your #9 hitter. Come late moments of the game, if a lefty comes in to face Getz/Pods..... you can then sub-in Dye for a PH. Just one thought but ....in a lot of ways...we have lots of flexibility now. And I really like not having to depend on Thome against great lefties late. Dye is not a natural PH but based on his slump and his fielding, I think for awhile now we have to see him coming off the bench a few times a week. Pods simply doesn't have the arm to play RF.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 01:39 PM) Whose our 5th starter? Who will leadoff? If there will only be 15 million left to spend, then to me you have keep Thome because he will be shorter term and cheaper than Dye. If you could get Thome to sign for 5 million- spend the rest of the cash on Figgins. There is no way Figgins will earn more than 10 million/season. Unless a team out there is very stupid. Another area of concern is our bullpen. Tony Pena has show me nothing so far, Scott Linebrink is regressing at a rapid pace, Jenks appears to be slowing down. The only 2 consistent arms out of the pen this season has been Carassco and Thorton. How come Aardsma figured out how to pitch in Seattle and couldn't do it here?!? For our 5th starter I go Dan Hudson. He's cheap and has a lot of upside. Leadoff? Chris Getz. If there's only $15M left to spend, I don't go and spend $10M of it on Figgins when he have a full outfield (if we bring back Dye) and a full infield barring a trade. I think Thome has to come back. We need his LH bat. Use what we have leftover after re-signing Thome and get a solid reliever or two.
