QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Feb 25, 2009 -> 02:05 PM) AJ hitting 1. In-play, no outs Owens on 2nd, AJ on 1st. TCQ didn't move the runners along and proceeded to destroy the dugout. He'll miss the rest of ST.

-I think Gordan and Dayan will be playing for this ballclub by late June Neither will sniff the bigs in 2009 until Sept, if at all. Curb your enthusiasm.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Feb 7, 2009 -> 04:57 PM) I think that's more of a product of knowing what is coming and cheating a little bit. Yeah. That could be it. Good call. Bad habit, though.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Feb 7, 2009 -> 03:06 PM) I like his swing A LOT. He doesn't drop his hands much, which shows me that he should be able to catch up to the major league fastball. His bat speed wasn't magnificent, but it was BP. What stood out to me most was how well he stayed back on the ball and than attacked with his hands first to the ball. He's got a strong swing, no doubt about that. He stands a bit high in his stance, but I don't think it'll be a problem at all. It was nice to see him go the other way too, which a lot of guys don't do in BP. It also looks like he has good overall balance. I'm impressed. The guys is a mammoth. He doesn't stay back nearly enough to handle a breaking ball. His head travels way too much. Watch the side angle.

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Feb 3, 2009 -> 07:04 PM) 2nd half & playoffs, the Sox had barely any speed in 05. And no, Timo doesn't count. Outside of Pods, Iguchi & Rowand each had 15 & 16 SBs, respectively.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 3, 2009 -> 01:16 PM) I feel the same way. I also like my 7,8,9 hitters to work a pitcher out and not be easy outs. The best way to get an opposing Pitcher in the groove is to give him a few easy outs in a row. Also, just about every other hitter in the lineup from 3 on down will have a better OBP than Alexei for the most part so I like them in front of him. Hey Rock, is this deal gonna happen or are we getting ahead of ourselves? Levine (ESPN) reported it's not close and probably not gonna happen. Although, he's almost always wrong.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 3, 2009 -> 12:55 PM) I personally think Abreu could hit 3 and Q 4. 1. Someone 2. Getz 3. Abreu 4. Q 5 Thome 6. Konerko 7. AJP 8 Fields 9 Alexei-this is where he has performed the best 2.Getz 3.Abreu -Ozzie would have to break up the leftys. If Owens leads off, that would be 3 in a row. He'd NEVER DO THAT. That's why Lilibridge has such an advantage as a lead off hitter. He's RH.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 3, 2009 -> 12:06 PM) I would say the complete opposite, that you arent taking into account the type of power hitters we have. Thome is a strike out machine and Konerko is a DP machine. This team needs runners off of first base and in scoring position as often as possible, and with high avg hitters like Q, Konerko (maybe) and Dye behind them, they need to be able to move from first to third and score from second on a hit. Speed in front of these sluggers is very important. If you put Thome at the lead off position and he was station to station, would you think it wouldnt matter if someone with speed was in that spot? Speed isnt always stealing bases or bunting like you seem to picture. Its being able to move up a base on a wild pitch or a bobble. Its being able to move into sac fly position with 1 out, going from 1st to 3rd on a bloop and being able to take dp's out. THATS the kind of speed we need. SPOT ON. GREAT POST!

KW ranked in "second tier" of five (MLB GM's)
macsandz replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jan 31, 2009 -> 11:15 AM) EXACTLY. Carlos Lee + some $ = Pods, Vizcaino, AJ, Iguchi & Hermanson = World Series Champions. Just like Swisher = Viciedo, Betemit, Marquez & Nunez. -
KW ranked in "second tier" of five (MLB GM's)
macsandz replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (3E8 @ Jan 31, 2009 -> 10:45 AM) According to FanGraphs, Carlos Lee's worth in dollars for '05 was $6M. The dollar worth of Scott Podsednik + Luis Vizcaino for '05 was $5.4M. So without considering their actual salaries, Podsednik + Vizcaino was almost equal to Lee alone. Yet the Brewers paid $8M for that $6M worth of production, while KW paid $2M for a $5.4M value. Which of course enabled him to sign AJ, Iguchi, Hermanson while insignificantly increasing the budget and adding several more wins EXACTLY. Carlos Lee + some $ = Pods, Vizcaino, AJ, Iguchi & Hermanson = Word Series Champions. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 10:36 AM) Judging by his skill set, I could love to see how Lill reacted to CF. He was an excellent CF in college. He won the equivalent of a Gold Glove out there. I think he contributes more as an amazing IF, myself. Don't look for him to hit much, though.
-
QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 11:02 AM) This. I would rather have Getz at 2B if he is healthy and try lead off. By mid-April,... Getz will be the fulltime 2B and leadoff.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 28, 2009 -> 10:23 AM) Im sorry but 2 weeks of training isnt going to drastically improve your defense. Yes it can. With the right instruction, one day can make all the difference once you get the footwork right. It becomes about repetition. As a corner IF position, there are only so many hops a baseball can take at 3B and stay fair. You just have to learn how to anticipate off the bat. Confidence is EVERYTHING and it sounds like he's getting it. Good for him and the Sox.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 11:00 PM) Kenny has talked about how some details of potential moves slipped out and hurt him last year, but I don't buy any of that. Kenny missed out Rowand because he didn't offer a fifth year. Kenny missed out on Fukudome because Fukudome wanted to be the first Cubs Japanese player, and thank god for that. Kenny missed out on Miguel Cabrera because the Marlins liked Miller and Maybin more than Fields and Danks/Gio. And, Kenny missed out on Torii Hunter because the Angels came in last-minute and offered a ridiculous contract that no one was going to match. The media didn't hurt him at all. Good post. It's not that Kenny's candor blew any deals, (though at the time he was humiliated and on the defensive when he said that) it's more that the web media would leak an interest and force leverage from the player's side which is bad for business in the front office. The gag order came down from Jerry this year. Kenny' saying he's not "talking but listening" in Vegas next week on the call today was an inside joke to Jerry.

QUOTE (gosox41 @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 10:23 PM) Do you know anything about this for a fact or is this just opinion? Since the season ended, KW has cut $36 mill in pay roll. While I'm well aware of the economic situation and that some players are due raises, I have a hard time believving payroll will be cut 33%. I have no inside info right now, but the team won a division last season and drew well. Season ticket prices are going up, not staying the same or decreasing. I just don't see payroll remaining at this level. I may be wrong but logic tells me othewise. KW has to know this team can't win a next year the way it's currently set up. If you're going to rebuild, you trade Jenks and Dye (and PK and Thome if possilbe) not keep them and hope Richard and Marquez win 15 games each and hope Anderson learns to hit, that one of the 42 second basemen KW has picked up become starts and that Fields hits and fields better. too many quesiton marks. My wife's maiden name is ...Hahn.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 09:27 PM) God, I don’t know. Maybe it’s the legitimate Dye trade rumors going around, and the fact that Konerko’s going to remain a fairly valuable commodity to a team that might be out of the race in September (though I hope not). Tell me why you think any different? Your post implied there would be drastic roster moves that would gut the team. I don't think there will be. I love a trade as much as the next guy, but expecting KW to bounce these guys is not realistic. Williams has a huge ego and this is his time of year to get the spotlight. He's screwed it up with his bravado last year and he's playing it close to the vest right now, but again, I think minor moves from here on out. This offseason is more about subtraction than addition.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 08:32 PM) Gobble? Only if it's to throw batting practice against Konerko. Good call. Nothing like a rainy walk-off.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 08:30 PM) It’s starting to look like the only members of the old offensive core that are gonna be here in late September are Thome and AJ. I still think AJ’ll retire as a Sock. At least I hope so, but he has many years left to go before we find out. No it doesn't. Tell us how it looks that way at all....

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 08:15 PM) If that's the case, then JD won't be the only one moved. Prepare for EXTREME TEAM MAKEOVER:WHITE SOX. Prepare to be dissapointed if you think there is some major overhaul coming. The Sox are cutting costs for economic purposes...like EVERY OTHER BUSINESS right now. The fact that Kenny moved on the Vazquez deal now and didn't wait a few more days for the meetings tells me he has nothing really going on the market. He's not gonna move Dye or Jenks or any other key player and you don't want him to. We need a damn RF that produces like Jermaine and we need a damn closer the likes of Bobby. He knows that. He tried to create a market for them earlier and will listen if he's approached, but I'm telling you aside from some secondary moves like a Broadway-Taveras deal and maybe a free agent 4th starter & catcher signing, this team is pretty well assembled for 2009. Like it or not.

ORLANDO HUDSON should be the next target
macsandz replied to macsandz's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Dec 17, 2007 -> 11:53 PM) We don't need anymore free-agents-to-be. Not a bad position to be in. It gives us flexibility. If we want to resign OC, we do it. If we walks, the Sox then own two first-round draft picks in 2009 and a sandwich pick. I'll take it. -
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 17, 2007 -> 02:31 PM) Good news Soxtalk, I could s*** bricks of gold Your Photoshop work here just made me throw up in my mouth...

This web rumor suggests the D-Backs may start shopping Orlando Hudson after the pick up of Haren: mlb-rumors.blogspot.com/2007/12/news-and-notes-prior-to-get-big.html (scroll down) He's cheap by recent standards, has one year left on his deal and AZ isn't gonna pay out for him. This guy would be a serious upgrade for the Sox. He is an '05, '06 & '07 Gold Glove winner at 2B with some serious plate stats to boot: Switch hits - 2007 - AVG .294 | HR 10 | RBI 63 | OBP .376 | SLG .441 The Sox obviously have a great trade relationship with AZ (Javy, Richar, Quentin) so make the move Kenny and we'd have a sick all Orlando DP combo next year! AZ just picked up Burke from Houston. He's also a 2B. The walk year is why Hudson may be available. This would give us leverage in any trade. The Sox have had success in one-for-one deals with AZ, but in this case I would think it might take more. I would send Uribe, Sweeney and Oneli Perez. DO IT KENNY!
