Conference Call with Rick Hahn - highlights and quotes
almagest replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 24, 2017 -> 10:30 AM) Interesting to read his thoughts on Basabe. I think people that feel the Sox didn't do well enough in the Sale trade need to take a step back and show patience. While Basabe may only have a current FV of 45, developments in his game can easily push that to a 55 or 60. If he can translate that athleticism to discernible baseball skills, he could be a great player down the road. Also interesting that they seemingly haven't closed the door on Diaz starting, even if he's going to start as a reliever. I think people are concerned about our continual failure to help these 45 FV prospects unlock their potential, but honestly if we can't start doing that this organization will be a failure no matter what. We need to acquire these kinds of players at the back ends of our trades + draft them and build them up to have any chance at being good, otherwise we'll end up in the same place we were last year - a few all-star level players with giant holes everywhere else. -
Steve Stone saying dead arm probably, which is to be expected at this point in spring training

QUOTE (iWin4Ron @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 06:52 PM) Hi guys, I have a homework assignment (for Japanese class) to 'interview' people based on simple questions and report back. This is a language course, so I am not interested in answers that are too deep. I appreciate any input into the answers and discussion here as I will use it for my essay! Thank you. 1. Have you ever been to Japan? Do you want to go? 2. What's your favourite Japanese food? In regards to this favourite Japanese food, how do you like it (meaning: What type of sushi do you like? Or how do you like your Ramen?) Examples: Sushi, Ramen, Udon, Tempura, Tonkatsu 3. Do you enjoy anime/manga? If so which ones? If not, what do you think of anime/manga? 4. Is there any strange opinions you have on Japanese culture and would like to share? 5. Do you play any popular Japanese games? Or Have you? If so, which ones? examples: Kingdom hearts, Final Fantasy, etc 1. Yes and plan to visit again in the next 5 years 2. Yakitori, Yakisoba 3. Not really. Did when I was younger, though 4. Nothing strange; it's an interesting blend of western & eastern cultures, though. 5. Yes. Too many to mention - playing through Yakuza 0 right now.

QUOTE (SmashROT @ Mar 7, 2017 -> 04:10 PM) Watched Japan vs. Cuba this morning. Almost like a soccer match in that dome! They had an entire horn section. Fun stuff!I saw a Tokyo Giants game in the Tokyo dome in 2012 and its like that during their regular season too. They have custom chants for each player.

Burdi is nasty - fastball looks good and he's got a nice slider.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Mar 5, 2017 -> 02:19 PM) What happened? Mark Copyright strikes shut down the channel. Looks like most of these games are gone now, too. Shame.

Skaggs with control problems and Kevan Smith with a 2 run single. 3-0 Sox after 1.

Giolito starting, Matt Thornton doing the color.

QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 04:05 PM) I guess I was expecting the immediate impact of a hitter like Benintendi for Chris Sale. I am not concluding that Moncada was over hyped but I am starting to wonder if he will turn out to be as good of a player as his rating as a number the number one prospect in baseball. http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox...ying_to_be_more If he was ready to contribute at a high level in the pros right away (like Benintendi, Swanson or Bregman) they wouldn't have traded him. Red Sox have a void on offense without Big Papi and I'm guessing if Moncada showed he was ready last year, he'd be playing third right now and we'd be having the same discussion about Devers or Robles.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Feb 27, 2017 -> 01:00 PM) Surprisingly no tv or streaming for this. LameSox vs. Cubs, Moncada and Giolito starting - no TV. Doesn't make sense.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 01:18 PM) Sports on Earth @SportsonEarth 5h5 hours ago Do velocity drops for pitchers matter in #SpringTraining? More than you think. http://oak.ctx.ly/r/5fuz9 Man, this just looks wrong

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 10:03 AM) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/02/jose...ors-astros.html I don't blame them for balking on including Musgrove. They need all the pitching they can get and parting with someone they figure to be in their rotation this year is unlikely. If this is true, not sure why the Sox are insisting on Musgrove.

QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Feb 1, 2017 -> 02:37 PM) George Ofman @georgeofman 1m Hearing the farm rich Texas Rangers are in the mix for Quintana. Oh boy. Well there's something new! Time to go dig into Texas's farm system for 50 pages!

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 27, 2016 -> 04:12 PM) I don't like seeing a team that I think should be competing for world series chances saying hopefully the wild card is available. If you're building a team to get in the wild card game I think you're doing it wrong. Win your division, don't leave your entire season up to a one game playoff. Houston is foolish for valuing prospects over a young cost controlled ace because they assume success from players with short track records and players rebounding from bad years. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 01:36 PM) Holy crap I found something strange in the internet. Check out this entirely reasonable article and comment section from yankees fans: http://www.pinstripealley.com/yankees-rumo...-trade-interest I was expecting proposals like "We'll give them Texiera and Headley for Quintana, Robertson and Frazier" but those are all actually sane. They seem to be thinking the same as us - they've got a ton of hitting prospects and we have the pitching they used to have need. -

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 12, 2016 -> 10:34 AM) Awesome stuff here as always from Brian and Future Sox as a whole. It was good hearing Chris Getz on the radio with Spiegs and Goff last week as well. Is there a link to that interview? -
QUOTE (peppers312 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 04:23 PM) so if you're not looking at what a closer has already done, it seems like everyone's rationale is this how you evaluate a closer... 1. FIP 2. WHIP 3. K/9 4. BB/9 4. Saves 5. ERA ?? FIP is better than ERA for pitchers in general because it takes crappy defensive plays out of the mix entirely. High WHIP usually correlates with high ERA/FIP but not always. It's always a warning sign though that the pitcher was lucky to escape situations without blowing a save. Walks and strikeouts per 9 is also just good for every pitcher. A guy with a high ERA but high K/9 and low BB/9 is a good candidate for a "rebound" season. Saves are like wins for SP - somewhat in the pitcher's control but mostly not, especially because a blown save can happen before the 9th.

Red Sox acquire Chris Sale, White Sox get Moncada+

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:16 PM) Excited to have Moncada, but can't help but wonder why this trade couldn't have been made at the trade deadline this year?I don't think Boston was offering Moncada at the time, or if they were it was him and some filler. I also think the Nationals deal leaking last night pushed the Red Sox to make a move. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 01:13 PM) Yeah, that was when Boston thought they weren't giving away a top player to get him. They literally gave away the top prospect in baseball, plus more. Sure, I get that. Adding a potential perennial All-Star/HOF level talent will open a lot of doors. -

I remember when we were all like "LOL Red Sox we're not trading Chris Sale to you! You guys are idiots!" -
I don't know why you'd non-tender a guy with an .821 OPS last year for a 30 year old former-AAAA player who dominated the Korean league (which is still an unknown as far as actual talent translation), but I can say I'm glad I'm not a Brewers fan. Carter would be a good pickup for the Sox as DH while rebuilding. Hell I'd even think he's a solid addition if they decide to go for it again for some reason (please don't).

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 3, 2016 -> 02:30 PM) Matt Davidson was so fixed in his 4th season at AAA, his OPS was .001 higher than Leuri Garcia. He was better than he had been, but he still sucks. Garcia did hit .313/.367/.426, so that's not exactly terrible. Still you'd like to see higher numbers from Davidson than some AAAA middle infielder.
