League adjusted to Phegley. -
My grade for this thread:

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 11:44 AM) She's never exactly been known for her hitting. Even in softball. Most people simply don't realize how difficult it is to hit a softball coming in that fast at that short of a distance. They just see this little blond girl pitching to guys that they've seen hit baseballs 400+ feet. Pitting her against RJ they would say, "of course he's going to strike her out. Look what he did to major league hitters." It's not quite the same thing. Also based on the study I'm not sure a few days would be enough time. It might take them weeks/months and maybe even years. You have to remember that she was really good at making other professional softball players with many years of experience whiff at her pitches as well. I think a better comparison would be a great fast-pitch hitter and Randy Johnson Chris Sale.

How could Keppinger slug over .500 against anyone, ever? Even with a metal bat? Or in 12" softball? All he seems to do is poke singles into right field on outside fastballs, or hit weak grounders.

The Soriano deal is terrible. Instead of overpaying for slightly above league average production, they're overpaying for this production for another team. All they have to show for it is a low-end pitching prospect, and Junior Lake. I guess I understand the need to get rid of Soriano, but please don't refer to this as a "win" for the Cubs by any stretch.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 02:35 PM) To be fair, gameday has the slider coming in at 92 mph. Fastball was 98-99 and up, though. Slider was down and 92.

Tigers announcers talking about how Verlander had no business throwing a slider to Flowers because he couldn't catch up to his fastball.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 01:34 PM) Why? What happened?Fielder clearly safe on a nice try by Gillaspie.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 21, 2013 -> 02:48 PM) He has to be replaced this offseason with a back-up to Phegley.I think he'd be okay as a backup, considering what we've gotten from our backups in the past few years.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 12:44 AM) I never said anyone was an idiot. Strikeout with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs is really bad. Most other situations it does not hurt you anymore than a different kind of out would. There are many people on this board who know a hell of a lot more about advanced metrics than I do by the way but I'll be the saber god if you want me to be.How does it hurt you more than a grounder to the pitcher? A lineout to an infielder, a pop out or short fly out, or any of the hundreds of other scenarios where the run won't score? I'm sure you've seen all the inventive ways we've failed to score that runner. How is a strikeout worse than any of those?

Less likely: Konerko is out for a while and the team needs a backup, or Dunn is on his way out. More likely: Minor league filler. I think the AAA first basemen aren't hitting very well.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 09:53 PM) What the hell happenedPop up on the infield, was Gillaspie's ball all the way. Beckham charged in out of nowhere and ran into Gillaspie, and the ball dropped.

Ahahahahaha that's the White Sox. This is a hell of a season.

Keppinger is an .864 OPS player against LHP, .680 against RHP. Pretty clearly a platoon player. Hannahan would be an ideal platoon partner if he didn't suck so badly against both. Would've been nice to sign Chavez as well, but hopefully we can find a lefty 3B who can hit righties decently - any candidates out there?

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Oct 12, 2012 -> 11:17 PM) Pathetic effort by Drew Storen tonight. Terrible pitching with 2 strikes and you simply can't walk two batters in the 9th inning with a 2 run lead.2 strikes, nibble nibble nibble, walk. Painful to watch and I don't even care who wins this series.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Oct 1, 2012 -> 10:00 PM) Tough crowd tonight. Forte is worthless? Defense is awful? C'mon guys. This has been a really good game for us.Bad defensive line play. Lucky Bryant can't catch anything. The secondary is playing fine, though. Yet another interception.

The turnovers are nice, but man the Bears are playing some bad defense right now.

9/17 Tigers at White Sox
almagest replied to Swingandalongonetoleft's topic in 2012 Season in Review
Yeah, even against a team that struggles as bad as we do against the Tigers with RISP is going to put up some runs if you load the bases two innings in a row with 1 out. -
It's tough to close when you only have one pitch, and that's what Reed has shown. He can't get his changeup over, and hitters seem to recognize it, because they rarely swing at changeups that are close (from what I've seen, anyway). Reed's fastball isn't good enough to put hitters away unless he makes a perfect pitch.

Return of an All-Star: Sale vs Royals
almagest replied to Steve9347's topic in 2012 Season in Review
I don't know why you throw Franceour a fastball ever, except to keep him honest. It's the only pitch he can hit - any time I've seen him get a hit it's on a fastball, and it's to the opposite field. Get ahead and throw him junk and you'll get him almost every time. Nice win, though Reed sure is scary sometimes. -

I know they keep harping on the play at the plate, but it was incredibly close, and in fast motion I can see why he was called out.
