Hopleaf in Andersonville. Good food, absolutely amazing beer list.

Zito showed tonight why any team should be happy to have him... NOT! (LOL) Gave up eight runs in three and a third.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 09:38 AM) The White Sox could be trading a reliever. Everyone needs them and teams will overpay. Hawk and Stone were talking about it the other day saying teams would have to pay double to get a good reliever. Maybe they were hinting at something.I was thinking the same thing. I really wouldn't be surprised at all if Jenks were traded.

QUOTE (beautox @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 02:13 AM) one of my favorite games. I'm really excited about ffxiv all though ffxi took a ton of my time away.I didn't much get into xi, but I'm still very much looking forward to xiv. Also been playing Final Fantasy IV:The After Years, which just came out on WiiWare. Sequel to my favorite SNES game of all time (Final Fantasy II/IV).

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) 2 for last 49 with RISP. This is eerily similar to our stretch of 0 for against relief pitchers in 2007.That's absolutely amazing. -
Suggesting that the Sox need to hit MORE homeruns? Someone here is going to have an aneurysm.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) I was going to make the comparison between hitting guys we've never seen before and winning in Minnesota. Both have become mental issues it seems.I'm inclined to think it's a mental issue, since it's much harder to believe that the Sox scouts are simply unable to provide a decent report on opposing pitchers, and no changes have been made if this is the case.
-
I blame the shutouts on injuries, and having guys like Lillibridge, Betemit, Miller, Ramirez at the beginning of the year, and Fields during his horrid stretch in the lineup. I imagine Walker will be fired at some point this year if this continues, though, since someone has to take the fall. I also wonder if it's the scouting contributing to this inability to hit pitchers they've never seen before, or if it's a player mindset, like "we can't win in the Metrodome"?

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 02:49 PM) His ERA coming in to the game was still around 5.60 thoughHe's been up and down this year -- pitched well vs. Texas, Tampa Bay, and Seattle, poorly against Anaheim, Detroit, and Texas. -

It'd be nice to see an aggregate ERA for pitchers making their first start in the majors, and first start against various teams. I wonder if other teams struggle as much as we seem to. -

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 02:28 PM) It lead to a three run homer after the walk. They put pressure on the pitcher especially in a 1-0 game as oppossed to stepping up and swinging at the first pitch (i.e. AJ) and popping out or grounding into a DP. This team has scored 4 runs in 27 innings against these pitchers and have yet to have a rally. Anyone have AJ's numbers when he swings first pitch? So Buehrle walking the leadoff batter, the third batter, then giving up the home run didn't lead to a 3 run homer, the sacrifice bunt did? That was the key to the inning? Really? Okay... whatever you say. I'm not continuing with this absurdity. -

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 02:21 PM) So Beckham is going to step in save the team with his offensive prowess got ya. The bunt there did not manufacture a run it manufactured three. Sacrifice bunts are also three run homers. Got ya. -

QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 04:02 PM) WHAT point? "But we win games!" "But there are other bad managers, too!" "But... no! You're just WRONG!" "But... he won us a WS 4 years ago!" Please tell me how any of that is relevant, much less a valid POINT. I mean, come on, it's just ignorant. As I said earlier, winning doesn't always mean you played it right. That's really just common sense. Isn't winning the overall goal, though? We've won 83, 99, 90, 72, and 89 games during the regular season with Ozzie as manager. We've outperformed expectations every year but 2007, when the predictions were dead on, and 2004 (IIRC, couldn't find data), when everyone was hurt. If you want to say that has nothing to do with the quality of a manager, that's fine. Maybe it doesn't, but then how in the world would you judge a manager? Anecdotal evidence from a select few games you remember? Overall, the White Sox have been successful, so Ozzie is going to be the manager. If we have a bad season or two, he'll be gone. That's how it works. Also, you do really need to stop with the personal attacks, if you want to keep posting here. It's REALLY hard to get banned from Soxtalk, from what I've seen, but it can happen. We're all on the same side, and while you do have some valid points, so do other posters. Remember: , not .

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 03:06 PM) Wise isn't as bad as I thought he'd be out there but he sure does a fine job of making his fielding of routine fly balls look pretty.Wise is pretty rough out there and at some point he's going to misplay a ball in a bad situation and cost us at least a couple of runs. He's better than Podsednik, though. I do wonder why we don't give BA a chance to play everyday and finally see what we have with him, since he's currently better defensively than Wise, at least equal on offense, is younger, and has a higher ceiling. Eventually it'll shake out though. Like other people have said in this thread; it's really not worth worrying about. Either Ozzie is incredibly stubborn and short-sighted, in which case there's nothing anyone can do anyway, or he knows something about Anderson we don't. Also these BA threads are absolutely hilarious. Great entertainment for down time at work. Thanks guys!

If we're going to DFA Wise, why is he playing? We know when Quentin will be back, Pods is already in the lineup so at least we have "speed", and Anderson can at least play good defense in CF. Why even give a player who won't be on your roster in a week at-bats?
-
Career vs. Righties, Wise hits .215/.256/.386/.641, with 21 BB/82 K. Clearly, we need to make room in the lineup for him.

Derrick Rose's High School Grades Were Altered
almagest replied to maggsmaggs's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) My point is guys who don't belong in college shouldn't go to college just because they can put a ball in a basket. The fact that he had to cheat to even do that shows a bigger problem. If going to college increases his chances in the NBA draft, then the player should have to take his academics seriously enough to be eligible to play. Just like everyone else in school needs to maintain a certain level of academic abilily in order to land a job of their choice. Rose didn't do that. He had no business being in college. Like it or not, athletics is a huge part of college (and high school). Schools make tons of money with their athletic programs. Athletes get preferential treatment. That's not going to change. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) Its not his fault the NBA won't let him into their draft out of HS. It may not be his fault Simeon changed a grade. It may not be his fault his brother took money. It is his fault someone took the test with his name on it.Okay. What's the punishment? -
Derrick Rose's High School Grades Were Altered

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) If its no big deal for Derrick Rose to do what he did, why would it be a big deal for a guy who isn't an NBA prospect, but equally unprepared and unqualified for college to do the exact same thing? Why should anyone competing athletically in college have any business being a college student and have to show some sort of aptitude to be able to actually make progress towards a degree? This isn't a very good example. Kids who have no interest in academics or athletics don't go to college. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) Who really knows how all these guys are going to pan out. The Flying Illini's most unheralded recruit was Kendall Gill. Have you ever heard him talk about the recruiting visit he took when Bardo got all the attention and he was basically ignored? He turned out to be their best player. Rose had stardom written all over him, but what if he broke his ankle the first day of practice? So what's your point? Colleges shouldn't recruit star players because said player might break his ankle? Or colleges shouldn't boot a walk-on player off their roster for a player like Rose because the walk-on might be better than the star recruit? That doesn't make any sense at all. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 01:47 PM) So? I mean, I agree with you, but the point is that they have options. I'm just tired of seeing people blaming the big bad NBA/NCAA for "denying their right to make a livelihood" (which has been mentioned by two different people). I never said that, at all actually. I was just pointing out an example of someone who took another route other than the NCAA. And anyways, since he was essentially the first to do it, there really is nothing to compare. Sure, they technically have options, but realistically they have to go to college. The only other even semi-realistic option is to play in a good European league for a while, but that denies them a lot of local and national media coverage, as well as opportunities to be seen by scouts. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 29, 2009 -> 10:13 PM) If Derrick Rose can't get a 900 on the SAT, he should be drooling on himself. Seriously. If you saw the curriculum at some of these schools, you wouldn't be surprised at all. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 07:31 AM) Upon graduation of HS, players hoping one day to play in the NBA can either 1) Sit on their ass 2) Join AND1 3) Play in Europe 4) Play in Asia 5) Play in Australia 6) Play in South America 7) Play in the NBDL (i think) 8) Play in the USBL, CBA, ABA or any other professional league in the US or Canada 9) Go to college 10) Go to junior college 11) Go to a trade school 12) Join the military None of those options are better than playing for a high-profile D1 college team, and please don't tell me you're trying to argue that a player's draft position isn't improved by attending a major college program because of one player who *might* be a top 10 pick this year due to a pretty weak draft class. I work with a guy who taught at Harper HS in Englewood for 5 years. He's not at all surprised about this, because he faced severe pressure every year from administrators to boost grades for seniors so they could graduate, so the school could meet requirements, and to get the kids out of what's generally a pretty unsafe environment. I really don't think some of you understand what an education from CPS is like. Most of the students don't care about school, their parents don't care, and a large number of teachers don't care (my co-worker often talks about a math teacher who barely covered the curriculum, instead mostly talking about how important it was to free Mumia Abu-Jamal). It's not hard to see why one of the few teachers who does care would alter Rose's grades, to get him out of the school and onto the path that lead to him making almost 5 million dollars this year. It's also not hard to see why a teacher who doesn't care would alter Rose's grades, to continue to pad Harper's reputation as a premiere basketball school in Chicago. I think the desire to see honesty and morality win out in cases like this is admirable, but misplaced. I also wonder what a proposed "solution" to this would be -- make Rose retake the course? He technically passed, so I don't see how that would accomplish anything. Declare his year at Memphis to be void? Again, doesn't really accomplish anything, unless Rose decides to finish his Bachelor's there. Declare Rose ineligible for next season? What "punishment" works here?
