Official 2010-2011 NCAA Basketball Thread

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 03:02 PM) That doesn't make any sense. So because Illinois football generally sucks that makes them an elite/potentially elite basketball school? I don't really think that matters at all, not if you have the kind of funding, facilities, recruiting and coaching that OSU basketball has right now. Florida was top-dog for a few years there despite an equally elite football team, and Texas has a pretty solid program despite being a heavy football school. Football is going to top basketball every time anyways if the former goes on a solid run. I get what you are saying. If Coach K or Roy Williams were suddenly jobless and had the choice between MSU & OSU, I think that they may pick MSU over OSU, simply because they know they would be the top dog on campus. I just believe that is a factor when selecting which jobs are on the top of the list. -

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 02:57 PM) I think there are a fair number more than that. Schools like UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA and Indiana have been considered elite for quite some time, there are other ones that one great coach has made elite like Duke, Syracuse, MSU and UConn, and there are others that cycle into the elite bracket from time to time (OSU right now, Florida 5 years ago, Memphis before Calipari left, Michigan 20 years ago, ect). Discussing elite programs is different than elite jobs. Yes, Calipari may have made Memphis an elite program for several years as a #1 & #2 seed consistently, but it was never an elite coaching job. It's not like any big names were jumping at that position when he left. -

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 02:47 PM) I would second that. I would argue that it's 4th in the Big Ten behind OSU, MSU and Indiana (though obviously that last one is going through a rough patch), much less programs like UNC and Kentucky. I would have to disagree that OSU is the top job. Yes, Matta has shown how successful you can be there, how many good recruits you can get, and of course the athletic dept. is loaded. However, no matter what you win, you are always gonna be second fiddle to OSU football. I just think that a top basketball coach would rather be the #1 attraction on campus, not always be in the background to Sweater Vest. If you look at all the elite jobs, none of them have a top football program to compete with. -
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 10:38 AM) Has anyone on here ever gone to a Super Bowl? I think it would be cool, but tickets gotta be like 1000 bucks, Face value on the cheapest tickets alone is $500-600.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 01:38 PM) Was in the trade that landed the White Sox Ozzie Guillen, right? Todd Ritchie for Kip Wells & Josh Fogg was an awful trade from Day 1 Chris Widger

The fact of the matter is, as much as we like to b**** about Weber and talk about firing him, he presently has a contract through 2015. Knowing Ron Guenther, no way he fires him before like 2013 unless it gets way, way worse than this. Weber is gonna have to figure this out, one way or another. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 12:17 PM) Way before my time! Ron Kittle HATES Barry Bonds Greg Luzinski

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 11:17 AM) LMAO, you better check your dates here Jeez, he wasn't even on that 2000 team, WTF was I thinking???? I got my pitching rotations from the 1993 & 2000 teams all mixed up. I was right that he was young on a division winner with Alvarez & Fernandez, just screwed up the year.

QUOTE (Disco72 @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 10:31 AM) They actually send you three photos, each one is one second apart. Also, you can go online and watch the video of the event. This. I got a ticket for turning right on a red and not coming to a complete stop. I watched the video of it online, I was about a split second away from reaching a complete stop, but I was definitely moving the whole time. There went $100 to the citizens of Franklin Park from LittleHurt05.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 27, 2011 -> 06:56 PM) But...they were missing that scary long-haired safety for a chunk of the year. It's usually tough for any non-QB/RB to win the MVP award, but if there is anybody who deserves consideration, it's that scary long-haired safety. In the games he misses, there is an extremely noticeable decline in that defense.

I'm sure ESPN is so excited for that ILL/MSU College Gameday matchup in East Lansing in late Feb. (Don't laugh, I have tickets to that game. I'm also going to the ILL/NW game in Evanston, that will probably be court storming #3) These kids need to stop with this court storming s***. Illinois has been ranked around 20th and hasnt won a NCAA tourney game in like 5 years. Penn St. has won 3 of 4 in State College vs. them. I realize how down Indiana has been, but all the fans talk about is how great their program's history is, and then they rush the court for a win like that? Come on now. I haven't been one to jump on the Fire Weber bandwagon, but somethings gonna have to change soon. -I think he missed the class on how to play against zone defenses, cause his teams always look so f***ing perplexed when one is thrown at them. It began against Providence when Dee/Deron were around and hasn't changed. -This year I count at least 5 times that Illinois has had a chance to tie or take the lead in the last minute, and they turn the ball over without even getting a shot off. -Illinois is obviously not gonna compete for a title every year, but they should be at least winning a game or two in the tournament consistently and thats not even happening. -Early on he had some recruiting issues & the Gordon/Jamar situations, but at some point you have to be successful with your own players and its not happening. The inconsistency of these teams is maddening. -
The June 24-26th series between the Mariners & Marlins, scheduled to be played in Miami will be moved to Seattle instead. The Marlins will be the home team and no DH will be used. Reason??? U2 is playing at Sun Life Stadium June 29th and needs the time to set up. Baseball still means little in the state of Florida.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 27, 2011 -> 04:22 PM) It's just my opinion, but Gallardo could still very well be that team's ace, at the very least their number 2.. His stuff is beyond electric. I watched all 3 starts of his starts vs the Cubs last year and I thought immediately that this guy could challenge for a CY in the very near future. I agree 100%. I'd rank him above Greinke. He got tired at the end of last year, which skewered his numbers a bit, but he definitely has ace stuff and is only gonna turn 25 next month.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 27, 2011 -> 04:36 PM) Pittsburgh's defense, especially run defense, is head and shoulders above the rest of the league. 5th best of all time by yardage

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jan 27, 2011 -> 02:39 PM) I must be retarded or something because I can't find Colon's numbers against the Sox. I seem to remember them hitting him pretty hard when he was with the Indians. 9-6 in 19 starts, 4.15 ERA, 1.35 WHIP. Sox had a .261 average with a .739 OPS

To be fair, if Wood could have stayed healthy, he would have been on whole another level above Mark as a pitcher. That being said, what makes Mark so good is his ability to churn out 200+ innings year after year.

White Sox have interest in Freddy Garcia
LittleHurt05 replied to justBLAZE's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I'd be fine with that. Use him as a 5th starter JFP comes back or if someone else gets hurt. Use Sale as the closer for another year, before he gets his chance in the rotation. If they end up with 6 starts when Peavy is back, I'm sure they can figure something out with Freddy. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 27, 2011 -> 12:33 PM) To be dating Oney Guillen, she probably has to be. That, or a gold digger. But then again, a gold digger is most likely a c***. That's easily the best summary of the entire Oney Guillen situation I have ever heard. Well said my friend.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 27, 2011 -> 02:07 AM) This is a great thread. You never hear these kind of stories. I pity you guys cause there was a time baseball was very very cheap to go to. And it was still entertaining white sox baseball many of those years. There was no reason for this wild escalation of salaries and ticket prices and parking except for owners' greed. Unfortunately now it's way too expensive for many hard working southsiders to go to games. There are still are enough people and/or corporations that can afford to go that lets the owners keep the prices where they are. The fact is people still go, so they don't have a reason to lower them. It sucks for a lot of people that can't but in the end its still a business.
