QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 14, 2010 -> 12:12 PM) The Twins do not do things like have 70 caught stealing at this point in the season. Nor do they have 136 stolen bases at this point in the season.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 14, 2010 -> 09:25 AM) Actually...I meant the Jets defense/Ravens offense. My fault, wasn't clear. The Ravens offense torched the Jets on 3rd down. It was a combination of the Jets committing awful 3rd down penalties and the Ravens picking on the rookie CB. -
QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 01:36 PM) Aramis Ramirez (33) - $14.6MM player option There have been recent rumors that Aramis is thinking about declining the option and become a free agent. With the season he is having, he would be a complete moron to do that. He would better off exercising it and hoping for a Beltre-like resurgence in 2011.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 14, 2010 -> 08:33 AM) Yeah...that was such a "it worked great for the 2007 Bears" decision. I was actually surprised at how good LT looked against that defense, but the Jets had absolutely nothing through the air. The announcers were correctly screaming at the Sanchize towards the end of the game to stop looking automatically for the checkdown. The Jets passing game was flat out too conservative to win that game. That last drive was awful. He would look down the field for two seconds than immediately look for the dump off. I know the Ravens were putting a lot of pressure on him but come on, you needed at least 50 yards on that drive. Oh, and Dustin Keller, how about realizing where you are on the field? Switch the ball to your left hand and you might have the first down. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 14, 2010 -> 08:13 AM) Hence the concept of "Wins above replacement" where a replacement player = the average production at that position for the league. It's therefore a 50/50 chance whether the Twins would get better or worse production if they just plugged anyone in at that position. Hell, look how some of the AL contenders have struggled with their DH slot by just throwing anything and everything at it. The Rays and the White Sox are the examples there. Knowing the Twins, all of their minor leaguers become above replacement players when they get to the majors, so they probably would have gotten better production than average given their history.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 14, 2010 -> 01:52 AM) I know what you're saying and I even agreed with it to a degree, but in the grand scheme of things, I don't know what this has to do with Jim Thome and using WAR to add and subtract wins to a team. Each WAR is 10 runs and that 10 runs has a meaning. If you were to subtract 10 runs from a team, their Pythagorean W-L goes down by 1 win. So it's not totally incorrect to say that Thome would add 3 wins to the Sox while subtracting 3 from the Twins. True, but you can't just assume that everyone else's stats on the team would stay the same. With Thome in the lineup, Konerko doesn't put up the exact same numbers, because the variables of the lineup change. Maybe he does better because he has more protection. Or maybe he is pitched around more often late in games, because the opposing manager knows they can bring in a lefty to face Thome. Maybe he has to play 1st base more and therefore wears out as the season goes on and doesn't hit as much. How do you know that Thome would hit as well with the Sox as he did with the Twins? You also have to consider who would replace Thome in the Twins lineup. Of course that player wouldn't put up the same numbers as Jim, but he still could be worth at least 1 win, if not more, you just don't know that. I'm not disagreeing that not bringing back Thome is a top factor in the Sox finishing in 2nd place. I just disagree that its as simple to say that -3 wins for the Twins, +3 wins for the Sox = 6 games, therefore if Thome switched teams they would be tied.

QUOTE (IceCreamPants @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 11:52 PM) I am telling you guys right now. The Bears are going to wind up being the luckiest team in the league when we talk about it 16 weeks from now. Its the Rally Calvin charm they hold right now. Not trying to say this because its what I want to happen but I really think its going to be an odd year for my Bears. 2001 redux??? -

QUOTE (ChWRoCk2 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 05:25 PM) Lol, we'll see how optimistic you are after the Cowboys game tonight. Even with the turnovers it is not like the Bears were moving the ball on a crappy Lions pass defense. The Lions are half the offensive team the Cowboys are. Totally. 463 offensive yards is nothing. -

QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 05:16 PM) I'll say this about the Bears. Mike Martz in one game is 100000000000X better than Ron Turner. Not predictable in his play calls, utilizes Cutler (and his weapons) much better, and has a much better feel overall in a game. Nice to see the Bears actually have a legitimate offensive coordinator. Cosign X a million. It turns out that when your offensive line sucks, just keep running your QB away from the pocket. Loved it. -

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 04:46 PM) I'm gonna say it now. Based on what I saw today, if the Bears can play a cleaner game next week, they might have a shot against the Cowboys next week. I agree. As I mentioned before, the Bears definitely have the talent to beat some good teams. They also have the propensity for mistakes and turnovers that will make them lose the easy games too. It should be a very interesting season. The healthy LB crew definitely makes a difference though, as does #90 with the game changing play. -

QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 04:16 PM) The funny thing is... people usually rip Lovie for not having any balls and always kicking FG when were down on the one/end zone, yet most of the time... that decision he should not be faulted on (come on your on the freaking one yard line). However, Stafford was not in the game, Detroit could not move the ball to get a first down since Stafford was in, and it was still about 6 minutes left in the game. I agree with nitetrain, I agree with his choice all in all and the Bears still won. If the Bears actually remembered Calvin Johnson needs triple coverage, maybe there wouldn't even be a cause for such a cheap win. FWIW, from Brad Biggs' Twitter: Huddled with Danieal Manning afterward. The call on the non-Calvin Johnson TD was cover 3, meaning he was free in middle of field. What is amazing is Bears would risk Megatron 1-on-1 vs. Zack Bowman, who had battled cramps during the game. Naturally, Bears went to cover 2 on next down and had help for Bowman on same play. -
If the Reds want to have a chance to win the World Series, then Aroldis Chapman needs to become the closer now. No one will ever win a WS with Francisco Cordero as their closer.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 04:09 PM) Detroit was robbed. But hey, people from Detroit are used to getting robbed. Well played my friend -
The reason the Sox didn't sign Thome was because he couldn't play the field, yet their big waiver wire pick up is basically a full-time DH now too. I still support the Manny pickup no matter what happens, but I just find that funny and ironic.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 03:31 PM) Sure and the record book also shows Galarraga didn't throw a perfect game when he clearly did. LOL, yeah, I know. I agree that it is an awful rule. If somehow the Bears sneak in the playoff race though, it will count as a win. -

Bears win!!!! LOL. According to the NFL rules, that was not a touchdown. Is the rule stupid?? f*** yeah, but I'll take it. 1-0 Bears. My early analysis of the Bears is that they might win a couple games against good teams with the talent they have, but will also blow some games they should win. I'm thinking 7-9 again. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 01:38 PM) Sorry Hurt, my quote button isn't working. I was of the opinion a few days ago that Pena should be starting. He had success starting vs KC already this year, and he matches up better against all their lefty hitters. OK then. I didn't realize that, I can see what you are saying. Either way, their organizational depth, or lack thereof, is the biggest problem with the starter options today. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 01:08 PM) Ozzie thinking he had some new cutting-edge philosophy where the DH wouldn't be important. Ok. But I don't think that has anything to do with the 05 WS title. Most managers in all sports are stubborn as s*** when it comes to the way they run their games and organizations. Stubborn is the word to use not arrogant or egotistical because they have a ring.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 11, 2010 -> 11:48 PM) Both Ozzie and KW still have inflated egos from five years ago. Hopefully, they will finally realize '05 was your classic fluke. Just wondering, what do their inflated egos have to do with the Thome decision?
