  1. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 28, 2018 -> 01:27 PM) Funny thing is, is that if the rumors were flipped and it was reported the Sox had no interest in Machado or Yelich this winter, these same people would be complaining about it. Whiners are gonna whine. One thing ignored is that Hahn has said repeatedly they would continue to seek players that can be apart of the next contender and come with long term control. Yelich fits that and until Machado made clear that he would not sign an extension, so did he. I see no inconsistencies whatsoever coming from Hahn. Machado made it clear he wouldn't sign an extension years ago. The whole trade talk with him is still a major question mark.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 28, 2018 -> 03:03 PM) Here's Bill Maher's list Colin Kaepernick, LaVar Ball, Barack Obama, Eric Holder, “the war widow from the failed raid in Niger” and “the war widow’s congresswoman,” the Central Park Five, Steph Curry, “the UCLA basketball players arrested in China,” Whoopi Goldberg, April Ryan, “the entire NFL,” the cast of Hamilton, the cities of Atlanta and Chicago, Nigeria, Haiti, “and the entire continent of Africa.” Now add Jay Z. Did he make that list before or after his tasteful Holocaust joke?
  3. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jan 27, 2018 -> 04:07 PM) When does a rebuild complete exactly? When that World Series trophy is lifted over your head
  4. Tony is the king of the world right now, lol.
  5. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 26, 2018 -> 03:48 PM) But this is a slippery slope, and the owners know it. Okay, let's say the owners all collectively stop crying and decide to put more into payroll. Does Boras and the MLBPA then start saying, "Okay, I think this is fair now. We aren't going to ask more than we're being paid now"? When it comes to finances, these sides are diametrically opposed. They have to constantly push against each other simply to avoid being swallowed up. If the owner's decide to give them 20% more, it doesn't erase the problem, it just means they now have to fight the exact same battle to avoid giving 25% more. Nobody ever has enough money, so that's gonna happen no matter what. That can be countered with, the owners are worth nine/ten figures, do they really need to raise ticket prices or not sign any free agents? I don't have as much of a problem with teams doing complete rebuilds like the Sox or Atlanta, because they have a plan and a window where they plan to be competitive. It's teams like Pittsburgh and Tampa who kind of compete, but never put in the assets, while the owners are worth so much and will make so much money off the team in the long run, but claim small market.

  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 26, 2018 -> 03:32 PM) They will only do that if it gives them a chance to put a team in the playoffs. Take another example - Detroit. Detroit spent like it was going out of style the last couple years. They started last year with the 4th highest payroll in MLB on opening day. Was Detroit's spending a wise investment? God no. They wound up dumping their best players midseason because they were a 4th place team, after missing the playoffs the last 2 years. Why would I want my franchise to be like Detroit? They tried to do that and it was a crappy plan. After 4 consecutive division titles. I would love for my franchise to be like Detroit. They couldn't break through the playoff crapshoot, but it was still a great run.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 26, 2018 -> 03:17 PM) Then the league needs to take actions to make it possible for teams to compete at mid-levels of payroll. Teams may not be badly damaged by huge contracts in the modern league, but if spending $70 million in one offseason in new payroll like the 2015 White Sox did takes you from 73 wins to 76 wins, then that money was basically wasted. Teams will not spend money if spending money does not give them a chance to earn more. Right now the league is staring up at the Yankees and Dodgers who are spending huge money and developing talent, and saying "The only way we can keep up with them is to do what the Indians and Astros and Cubs and Royals did - amass an overwhelming amount of young talent". And they're not wrong! That's the current path open to a title, either be the Yankees and Dodgers or do a full rebuild. Until that dynamic is changed, then this is going to be the setup in the league. A sub .500 team isn't going to buy its way to competing for a wild card, let alone a championship; their only route to success is to rebuild. Throw in an occasional disaster like the Marlins on top of that and you've got the current league struccture. Or the extremely wealthy owners can stop crying poor and spend at higher levels of payroll?
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 26, 2018 -> 02:19 PM) Bob Nightengale ‏ Verified account @BNightengale 1m1 minute ago More #Brewers GM David Stearns confirms that they have talked to Ryan Braun about the possibility of moving to first base. Against LHP, Braun would be at 1B for Thames I imagine.
  10. QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Jan 26, 2018 -> 08:08 AM) Welp that sucked =) Did I say New York Islanders? I meant New York Rangers.

  12. QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Jan 25, 2018 -> 08:58 PM) Golden Knights/Islanders O 6.5 -115 Always bet the over on the Islanders, no matter how high it is
  13. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 25, 2018 -> 06:22 PM) Should I be happy? Always gave 110% and seemed like a real good guy, but never met him and he played QB, not RB. So, I say yes you should.
  14. Never count Boras out, this is all part of the game. Maybe it doesn't all go in his favor, but all it takes is one team.
  15. Reading the Twitter responses to the Brewers announcement, brought back some great prospect names. Mat Gamel and Matt LaPorta. I think LaPorta was in the CC trade, he was supposed to be a beast, he did completely nothing.
  16. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 7, 2018 -> 08:43 PM) I hope you Northwestern people enjoy your new RB coach. I hope you enjoy your new RB coach
  17. I can't wait until the NCAA concludes their investigation and docks Mississippi Valley State's soccer team 5 scholarships as a final punishment.
  18. Chipper Jones and Jim Thome combined fWAR: 153.6 Barry Bonds career fWAR: 164.4
  19. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 22, 2018 -> 09:16 AM) As we all predicted, Tennys Sandgren or Hyeon Chung will be in the semifinals. And with one quick glance at a Twitter feed, the surprise American hero quickly becomes Public Enemy #1. #Welcometo2018
  20. Best example of a so called team friendly extension that was 100% in the players advantage. I hope Bud Norris has issued him a major apology
  21. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 23, 2018 -> 10:49 AM) If they trade down I'd be fine taking a WR in round 1. I really don't like the idea of taking a WR in the top 10 though, particularly since there isn't a truly standout WR in the draft this year. Yeah, Calvin Ridley is not worth a top 10 pick. Maybe in the 20s. If you are gonna do that, might as well take a different guy somewhere in the 2nd-4th round anyway.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2018 -> 10:12 AM) As bad as the free agent market its, somehow Austin Jackson got a two year deal. For $6 million. Total. That's nothing and IMO bascially negates the fact that's a two year deal.
  23. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 23, 2018 -> 08:17 AM) Was it cramps? I read the heat is pretty awful there now. That's what I assumed in his upper leg, but I had the sound off at the gym. He tweeted that he's getting an MRI tomorrow, so maybe it is something worse. I think it was the Djokovic Monfils match that the on court temp was over 160 degrees and Monfils was going crazy from heat stroke.
  24. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 23, 2018 -> 06:18 AM) Nadal retired in the 5th? Yeah, he was struggling, limping around a lot, getting medical treatment. Cilic took the 4th, then as he broke serve to go up 2-0, Nadal immediately said that was enough and shook hands.
