  1. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 02:12 PM) They sucked because of 2005? Pretty much. 2005 over-inflated Ozzie's already gigantic ego to epic proportions, leading to his teams' repeated underachievement over the years.
  2. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 01:11 PM) When Danks is 100% healthy, he's an above average (damn good!) SP. Any staff in baseball would love to have him. When VMart is 100% healthy, he is THE best DH in baseball. A dangerous hitter, that would be welcome on any team in baseball. IMO, every day ballplayers are more valuable than SPs. The best SP can only help you win once every 5 games, whereas a position player, even a DH, can potentially help you win every game. Does this make sense? There is a large Dominican man in Boston who strongly disagrees with that statement.
  3. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 12:49 PM) I wonder why the 2012 Marlins sucked so much. 2005!
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 12:39 PM) It's the same principle. Just because he's going to leave early doesn't mean he won't care about the education there. The engineer is using his education to help start his business. The basketball player is using what he learned on the basketball court to further his career.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 12:24 PM) How would you know what's in his head? How do you know he's not going to keep a relationship with the school and graduate at a later time? When an engineer leaves school early to start a business nobody claims he doesn't care about an education. There is still a lot to be learned in 1-2 years of college, and going to a program that demands performance in academics may well have been important to him. This kid is poised to make millions in the NBA and risks it all by going to play for college, and yet instead of going to Kentucky or Florida, he entertained some very good academic schools for athletes. It is a ridiculous statement that you don't have much to back up. His profession is basketball, not engineering though. He is going to Duke to hone his craft to improve his chances in the NBA, which forces him to attend college for at least one year. Read the SI article about his recruitment. It was all about the basketball coaches, not philosphy professors. If it was truly about academics, MSU & Florida would have never made a list with Duke/Stanford. (And this is not a criticism of Parker, this is the correct thought process IMO.)
  6. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 11:22 AM) everyone can simply be issued their own personal armed guard. Can Steven Segal be mine?
  7. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 10:45 AM) Then the armed teachers will get him Duh. And if he gets past the teachers, Little Jessica will have Daddy's handgun in her backpack and will take the shooter out with military-like precision.
  8. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 10:28 AM) LaPierre calls on Congress to immediately appropriate money to put armed officers in every school in America. The conversation on this idea has to start immediately. He says the NRA has 11,000 police training instructors willing to help out. Someone should ask him "What happens if a crazed gunman ambushes & kills the armed officer? Then what?"
  9. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 10:25 AM) Wayne LaPierre of the NRA: "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." America!!! f*** YEAH!!!!
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 10:08 AM) This is a really ridiculous statement. How so? The "student" part of student-athlete disappeared a while ago, especially with the top players.
  11. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 09:33 AM) I wonder if Texas is planning to use him as their everyday catcher. Sending him out there in that heat every day is going to be tough. They already re-signed Geovany Soto, so they will be in a L/R platoon I assume. There is talk that they will use AJP as DH sometimes too.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 09:26 AM) By height. And by cup size
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 08:30 AM) He won't do that again. Tom Seaver was a pitcher. He isn't one anymore. Besides, AJ signed before he did anyway. You are just gonna ride the technicality of Napoli not signing all the way to the end, huh?
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 08:02 AM) More AJ isn't any good and nobody wants him hyperbole. The catchers who signed were back ups like Laird and Ross. The only starting catcher who signed I believe, was Russell Martin. Napoli, who isn't really a catcher, has not signed. In exactly 2/3 of the games that Napoli appeared last year, he played catcher. How exactly is he not a catcher?
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 07:40 AM) Yet, AJ floundered for how long on the sidelines of free agency while other catchers were signed to multi-year deals. AJ was such a perfect fit for the Yankees, yet they didn't even offer him a contract.
  16. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 07:49 PM) Anyone got the video of that HR? Stupid ass MLB and their asinine video strategy. Here you go
  17. It was always nice to have a "-ski" on the team. Thanks for 2005 and all the other good games AJ. Special thanks for pissing off Cubs fans so much. Good luck in Texas.
  18. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 03:59 PM) Yup, I'm there. As much as no season would suck, it would get rid of my ever-so-small optimism that they'll figure it out and we can have hockey. Just f***ing rip the band-aid off and let me stop worrying about it every day. Agreed. We all know it's not gonna happen, so just get the nonsense over with and cancel the whole thing so we can move on with our lives.
  19. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 04:03 PM) That may or may not be true. But its one thing to knock a kid for going to Kentucky, its another to knock someone going to Duke, Stanford, etc. Those top notch schools and it would make total sense for a kid like Jabari to actually care about education. It's hard to believe that "education" matters to a kid who probably won't stay in college longer than a year or two.
  20. QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 02:39 PM) Cubs signed EJax for 4 years, $52 mil Considering the current pitching market, that's not an awful deal for him. But it would look a lot better if the Cubs had some good young, cheap arms surrounding him in the rotation (like the Nats), which they obviously don't.
  21. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 02:58 PM) He got an NTC in this deal. Who said that? Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS edwin jackson gets $52M for 4 yrs. no no-trade clause. #cubs
  22. The Lansing State Journal has taken down the article. Oops.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 02:09 PM) Glad to see him stay in the Big Ten at least. Actually, his announcement isn't for another 45 minutes. I think someone at the Lansing Journal jumped the gun on the "publish" button. They better hope he is choosing MSU.
