  1. For having the worst farm system in the history of baseball, the Sox sure got some nice contributions last night from Axelrod, Tank, & Reed.
  2. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 04:40 PM) Arguing about what FIFA does is pretty futile. I agree there are better ways, but FIFA really doesnt seem to care what us Americans think. That's because we don't offer them enough money. Qatar knows how to do it.
  3. That sucks man, sorry to hear that.
  4. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 04:00 PM) Johnson is more deserving of an opportunity than Axelrod. He should replace Hudson at least. You really want Johnson to start tonight instead of Axelrod?
  5. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 03:43 PM) Right, that's the main thing. It's just a different animal. Penalties aren't always fair, but they're always entertaining. It's the most tense moments and condensed drama in sport. I can understand people complaining about them, but as a fan they're great fun to watch. A HR derby would be fun & entertaining too, but there's a reason why they don't decide the World Series via one.
  6. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 03:05 PM) Hockey players can rest. The problem in soccer is once you are out you cant come back. So with limited subs, some of those guys are playing 120 minutes, with no time on the bench except for between halfs, ot. That's why they should make a longer break before the OT period to get some rest. or add an extra substitution or two as the game goes on.
  7. Nadal goes down in the 2nd round to #100 Lukas Rosol. Wow.
  8. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 02:35 PM) f***in Mario Balotelli... It would only be fitting if he got a hat trick and another yellow on the celebration Which would suspend him for the final
  9. Dude, remember that time I ran into the wall? That was awesome brah.
  10. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 01:54 PM) I think most posters would say I've said enough on Ozzie. This "quit on the team" stuff is tiresome. Did Rios quit on the team? Did Dunn? It's easy to spout such a simplistic phrase. Do grown men and women really think Ozzie Guillen quit on the White Sox? Probably. No. Yes.
  11. For all the NHL fans: darren rovell ‏@darrenrovell Head up: Doc Emrick is calling Water Polo for NBC's Olympic coverage.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 12:45 PM) Things that should never be on a pizza for a thousand, Alex. I'd rather eat NY pizza for the rest of my existence then eat crap like pineapples on a pizza. Chicago and New York are kind of cousins when it comes to pizza. Same idea, different look. California pizza is like the crazy uncle who yells at pigeons. And a hot dog should never have ketchup on it, blah blah blah. In no way am I saying that the California pizza is better, but a little variety never hurt anyone.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 01:28 PM) Why is dan Johnson in the Sox system? If he has 18 hrs the Sox should trade him for scraps to somebody who will play the guy. Because there is nobody who will play him. He has 260 major league at-bats since 2007. There is a reason why the Sox were able to sign him to AAA.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 12:06 PM) Word. I guess it could be worse... It could be California pizza. Whoa. Whoa. How dare you speak badly of the California Pizza Kitchen?
  15. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 11:36 AM) Vin Parise ‏@VinParise According to league sources, the Chicago Bulls are drafting Tyshawn Taylor from Kansas tonight with the 29th pick -- backup for Derrick Rose Interesting. I hope the other teams see this Tweet, so they don't try to draft him with any of the first 28 picks and realize he is already gone.
  16. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 11:03 AM) Where did I say the NCAA shouldnt have wild card spots? I havent said that at all, I personally think if you are going to call it a "Playoff" it needs to have more than 4 teams. I am trying to come up with ideas to get more teams in the playoff, and a good place to start is to have a conference championship game in every conference, that way you eliminate teams to start. Also I think the WC in baseball would be irrelevant if the AL East had a AL EAST Championship Series, where 1 and 2 played for the right to move on. 2. You brought up baseball, I said football was a BETTER comparison. There is no actual comparison, the other football division in the NCAA has an entirely different playoff, and I believe conference champs get a bid in the other division. The problem is that there are 4 teams, not 8, and that won't change anytime soon. And if you just choose conference champions, then you are still subjectively deciding which conferences are better, same thing as selecting 4 teams.
  17. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 11:04 AM) I think Theo is a fantastic GM and has a great track record overall. However his performance since 2007, with the resources and assets that the BoSox have, has been mediocre. Many, many GM's have outperformed Theo in that span. But the same nuthugger pundits that built his reputation in the first place, can't find the cajones to criticize him when it's warranted. Call it the "Tony Romo" effect. Excellent post.
  18. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 10:34 AM) Life isnt fair. The system rewards certain conferences more than others. How do we know BSU wouldnt have won every BCS if only they had a chance? Plus baseball is 162 game schedule, every team plays every team. Its not a good comparison. A better comparison is NFL where the division champ gets an automatic playoff spot, regardless of how bad their conference is. See the difference, in this system a division champ wont even potentially have a shot. So the Giants wouldnt have been super bowl champs, because they werent 1 or 2 in the NFC. And last year GB wouldnt have even been in the conversation, because they were #2 in the NFC Central which was considered a weak division. Football is not baseball, its not basketball. And regardless any system you bring up, the conference champ always gets an automatic in. Baseball, football, basketball. 1. the NFL has wild card spots, which you don't think the NCAA should have. 2. It's an awful comparison anyway: NFL: 6 playoff spots for 4 divisions. NCAAF: 4 playoff spots for 11 conferences.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 10:29 AM) Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger Expect the Penguins to announce Sidney Crosby's contract extension on Sunday. Over $100 million dollars with an AAV of close to $9 mil per. Wow. That's a lot of salary cap room to spend on a player with serious concussion issues in the past. Of course, if he stays healthy, it's worth it. edit: I didn't realize he already made that much, I thought his current salary was lower.
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 10:21 AM) Illini, And what I am saying is its hard to argue you are one of the 4 best, when you didnt even win a division in your conference. The only way they are not playing in the conference championship game is if another team in their own division has a better record, and that almost always means that they lost to that team. I think it is far harder to win a conference + CCG, than to just be second in your division with 1 loss, especially if your division only has 1 other good team. So you beat a bunch of nobodies, have 1 loss, and you get rewarded because other teams who won conference championship games had 1 more loss? What about the fact they had 1 more win. There is no way to objectively determine who the top 4 are. Its merely guessing. So I would prefer a system with less guessing. How do we get that system, bar anyone that is not the conference championship game winner. That is fair and equal to all. If OSU f***s up in the CCG they are out. If Wisconsin f***s up, they are out. There are consequences, it makes sense. Otherwise every conference would be smart to get rid of the CCG. You might as well have undefeated Michigan and Wisconsin not playing each other, because that way they are both likely to make the top 4. Dont we want to encourage Wisconsin/Michigan to settle it before the playoff? Doesnt that actually increase the number of teams involved if you consider the CCG to be the first round of the playoffs? Now instead of 4 teams, we have at minimum 8 teams in the playoffs. Then you are rewarding teams that win a s***tier conference and penalizing teams who are forced to play in a tougher conference. It's why baseball started using the wild card.
  21. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 09:12 AM) I'd be in favor of adding a second extra time which was golden goal, but there comes a point when you finally just have to go to penalties How about you add another 15-20 minute break after extra time? Or allow for an extra few substitutions during OT? The option of penalties leads to many teams playing way too conservative. If that option wasn't there, I think teams would be more likely to attack and break the tie.
  22. QUOTE (balfanman @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 08:53 AM) Very true, particularly later on. But how much of Podsednik, Igutchi, Pierzynski, Uribe, etc acquisitions, and the Lee, Valentin, Ordonez, etc subtractions were K.W., and how much was Ozzie wanting it to happen? How many of those deals were strictly based on financial restraints? The latter players cost far more money than the former.
  23. QUOTE (balfanman @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 08:41 AM) The point being that K.W. & Ozzie were on the same page too, once upon a time. The Kotsay/Thome decision is when that whole thing turned, and we all know what the right decision should have been.
