  1. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 01:36 PM) Name the four men who have been Manager of the Year and MVP. Kirk Gibson?
  2. Olesz placed on waivers. If nobody claims him, he will probably be sent to Rockford. Hawks will still be on the hook for his $3m+ salary, but it won't count towards the cap.
  3. Once the Red Sox collapsed, the AL vote was over. I do think Manny Acta should have finished higher though. Roenicke was my preseason NL pick, but once the D-Backs went from last to 1st with a new manager, that vote was a given too.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 08:39 AM) JoeCStrib JoeChristensen #Twins express interest in Doumit, Willingham: Willingham could be a great pick-up for someone. I think he had like 25+ homers the last few years playing in that cavern in Oakland. If I were him I would stay away from Minnesota and finally go to a hitters park.
  5. 3 yrs - $36 million. And some kind of mutual option for the 4th year.
  6. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 08:39 AM) Aren't the Bears 6-3? You guys should be more happy about the Bears right now. Sure they aren't as good as the Packers, but 6-3 is nice. From what I can tell, I think everyone is pretty excited about them, they are the frontrunners for a wild card spot after the 2-3 start. It's just one person that insists on giving Lovie Smith zero credit for anything that has happened the last eight years that is getting everyone worked up.
  7. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 05:03 PM) Did they move B&B to a different station or timeslot? Since last Monday all I hear from 1-6 is the Jerry Sandusky Show. Bernstein has been all over the case on Twitter as well. They have done a good job covering it IMO, but it definitely has been a bit overload.
  8. Seabrook is not practicing today but he made the trip so the injury can't be too bad. Luongo has a minor injury, so it's Scheneider in net tomorrow.
  9. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 03:47 PM) When is the last time someone won unanimously? There are usually a few jerks who throw it off. Halladay last season. In the AL, Johan was the last one in 2004 & 2006.
  10. QUOTE (SnB @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 11:05 AM) "Rumor: Ron Zook out at Illinois" http://www.illinoisloyalty.com/GoIllini/20...out_at_illinois I understand why they want to get rid of him, personally I'm indifferent to the move. He makes Lovie look like an in-game genius with some of his decisions, but he has gotten some talent to Champaign the last few years. Ron Turner left the program in absolute shambles and he did manage to get it somewhat turned around and occasionally relevant. Plus, it's Illinois football. It's not like Urban Meyer is begging to take the job.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 01:12 PM) For what it's worth, Ditka "only" had 3 HoF's on his roster - Hampton, Payton and Singletary. I think Lovie's got 2 with good shots (Urlacher and Hester) and maybe three (Briggs, though probably a stretch). Richard Dent
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 11:09 AM) Tigers close to acquiring Prado for Delmon Young....ugh! Prado's a real good hitter and would be another good bat in that lineup. @JonHeyman Jon Heyman Don't see braves doing prado for delmon straight up. Sounds like bad idea to me.
  13. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 12:27 PM) Ditka took a crappy team and molded into one of the greatest teams ever (if not the best). He's always going to be loved for that, though I do think the praise is a bit much. He pretty much flamed out the last few years. Speaking of, the NFL Network's special on Ditka was great, if anyone hasn't seen it. And he only managed to make one Super Bowl appearance with one of the greatest teams ever. There was no excuse for not winning another NFC championship at the least.
  14. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 12:23 PM) This Lovie "love" is freaking hilarious. The guy is incredibly average at best. His in-game decisions are right up there with Andy Reid. Remove Devin Hester and a top 5 defense for the majority of his tenure and this team misses the playoffs every freaking year. Lovie is the luckiest coach in the league, no one else is even close. Look at some of the impressive wins this year against Atl and now Det. Defensive TO's into points and special teams. Fluke, fluke, fluke. That's the story of the Bears' success during his tenure. That's true for the SB run (mostly fluke) and last years NFC Champ run (all fluke). So Lovie gets no credit whatsoever for producing a top 5 defense? The guy emphasizes special teams more than nearly any other coach in the league, but gets no credit for when they succeed? What's your opinion of the Ray Lewis led Ravens of the past 10-15 seasons? They only win because of their defense, do you consider them a fluke? All those defensive touchdowns Ed Reed scored, just a fluke?
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 11:22 AM) He won't get that kind of money. He won't even get the 4/56 he got in the last contract, I'm willing to bet. And I'm also willing to be he'd come back to the Sox for a little less than other offers he might have. Not a LOT less, but a little. You don't think so? If this many teams are truly interested, I would think his price would get marked up like that. It's not like there are tons of FA options out there, I guess we will see.
  16. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 11:10 AM) Jerry Crasnick Roy Oswalt's agent Bob Garber expected to meet with #Royals people today or tomorrow in Milwaukee 11 minutes ago Would be a pretty nice get for KC. I like it. That's interesting. Everything I had heard made it sound like Oswalt only wanted to play for a contender or he might retire. I realize the Royals have the best farm system this side of Theo, but they still aren't close to major playoff contenders.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 10:48 AM) KW in a tough place right now, by his own doing. We all know the background, no need to rehash how we got here. Thing is, I believe he wants to move Quentin and probably Thornton, possibly AJ... and either sign MB or extend Danks. But my guess is, he isn't allowed to do either of the latter things, before first clearing payroll via the former things. The other teams know this, and are making it a tough sell. KW is then making it sound like he doesn't have to do any of it. If the other teams call his bluff, and/or if he can't find a way to have MB or Danks signed/extended... we may see an ugly team next year. I hope Kenny can move some of those guys for decent compensation, and soon, because I still think that signing MB, at the money he'll likely get, is smarter than extending Danks for what that would cost. And doing neither would REALLY suck. It may be smarter than extending Danks, but it still doesn't mean it's a good move. I really want Mark back, but at 4 years, $60 million? No thanks.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 10:36 AM) I go back and forth on this, there are qbs that have been amazing and started from day 1, there are qbs that have been amazing sitting on the bench, I think it really just comes down to there are good Qbs and bad qbs. I doubt Aaron Rodgers learned accuracy and his great pass selection from Brett Favre. Watching Favre he probably learned where/when to NOT throw the football.
  19. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 09:24 AM) Mike McCarthy is part of the reason why Aaron Rodgers is as good as he is. I think McCarthy is top 5 coach in the NFL. From his play calling to game management. He is really good. That wasn't a dig on McCarthy, it was more of a hypothetical comparison. I'm sure he has helped Rodgers a ton, but Kyle Orton & Matt Cassel wouldn't produce the same results with similar coaching. You need the players to win, no matter how good of a coach you are. Having Urlacher has helped Lovie, but Lovie has also put him & the others in positions to succeed, which is important for a coach. (As opposed to Ozzie for the last two seasons, who seemed to put half the team in a position to fail).
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 09:30 AM) JoeCStrib JoeChristensen #Twins keeping dialogue going with Capps: Nice. I hope they re-sign him.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 07:55 AM) My one long-term worry re: Smith is that all of these things are able to happen because he also happens to have been gifted the single most perfect possible player you could imagine for his system. Without that advantage, I wonder... You can say that about a lot of coaches. Is Mike McCarthy a good coach? He happens to have the best player in the entire league running his team, what would happen if Flynn was starting every game?
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 11:51 PM) He's an excellent coach. He's extremely solid at pregame preparation. His defensive theories are sound, and his teams always are in the upper echelon in the league in terms of takeaways. His issue is in-game coaching and making adjustments on the fly. He makes dumb challenges, he takes ill-timed timeouts, and his halftime adjustments often leave something to be desired. Overall though, I think he is one of the better coaches in the league. Well said shack. I don't think he gets the credit he deserves, partly because of his questionable in-game decisions. We all complain about Angelo's awful drafting, yet somehow Lovie has them set for their 4th playoff berth in 7 seasons. That includes 2 berths in 4 seasons of Rexy/NeckBeard/Griese at QB.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 04:48 PM) I can't stand watching the first 6 innings of an NL game where the pitcher batting helps bail out the opposing pitcher. I concur. I would have no problem eliminating the DH if the pitchers weren't so f***ing bad at hitting. So many rallies in the NL end because the pitcher, batting .135 on his career, is due up.
  24. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 06:57 AM) It may not happen in time for 2015, but at some point, the NL will finally adopt the DH, at which point MLB will eliminate the AL and NL and realign the teams into divisions geographically, which would allow any two teams to meet in the World Series. How would that work?? Every other pro league in the US also has teams split into geographic divisions, yet you can only face a certain amount of teams in the finals.. Chicago can't play Detroit in the Finals in any other league because they are in the same division.
