  1. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 11:13 AM) Have we discounted the theory that he's abandoned Walker's talking to him and just decided to do something on his own (maybe thinking there is no way Walk will be back next year anyhow?) He's finally turning and burning, that's a good thing. He was a sally the first 5 months however... Or maybe he refused to listen to Walker for the 1st 5 months and just suddenly decided to follow Walker's advice in September?
  2. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 24, 2011 -> 05:23 AM) That Brandon Saad kid is fun to watch. Might turn out to be one of the biggest steals in that entire 2011 draft. If he keeps it up, there's a chance he can make the squad as an 18 year old.
  3. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 06:50 PM) We're not in the top half of the Big Ten? Again, we're talking THIS year. Of those 6 teams you listed, I'd say 2 are clearly better than us, that's about it. This year, Penn St, Iowa, OSU, and Michigan are not even close to "definitely ahead" of Illinois, if ahead at all. If we can set up for that yeah. But we'd have to avoid the "wtf loss" before that. We'd have to be at a max of 1 big ten loss. And with Ron Zook as your coach, you can always expect the "wtf loss"
  4. 1-4 with a homer. Tied Albert for the lead in homers with 37. 6 more RBIs than Howard/Fielder. Still trailing Reyes/Braun by .003 in batting average
  5. QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 01:54 PM) http://blog.pictopia.com/wp-content/upload...ber-453x550.jpg Is that seriously the entire issue? Or is it just the cover?
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 12:41 PM) There are plenty of guys who are in the HOF without the gawdy stats, but because of their contributions in other ways. A guy like Ozzie Smith comes to mind right away. He is on the list of all-time great defensive players. I never said it's just about the stats, it's about the best at playing the game of baseball.
  7. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 12:23 PM) Lillibridge is a GIANT among men. I think our season really went south on us when he got hurt He was healthy in April & May and they were 8.5 back with 20 to play when he got hurt.
  8. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 11:20 AM) Holy s***. I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more pub. I didn't realize how close he was to leading all three categories. No s***. I had no idea either. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 11:54 AM) I would imagine that a 4-point jump in average is really, really difficult at this point in the season, especially when it's already that high. Probably near impossible. 6 games left, say 24 ABs. If he went 10/24, he would be exactly at .330.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 10:12 AM) I get what you are trying to say, but it is this very mentality that is sucking the fun out of the GAME of baseball. It isn't just about what statistics a player puts up. If that were really the case, it would be easy to write an algorithm and let it decide who should be in the HOF. Once you started paying players $10-20 million a season, baseball stopped being a GAME. I'm not saying you can't celebrate guys like Mark. There just should be some exclusivity to the Hall of Fame, as there has been.
  10. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 05:29 AM) Tough to celebrate guys who achieved because of cheating, well for most people it is. So at the end of his career. and he'll need many more years of 12-15 wins, would you rather visit the hall and see a video of Mark's no hitters and him sliding on a tarp, pitching in a World Series, smiling, or Clemens, Bonds, Sosa, etc etc? Which promotes the game of baseball more? It should be a celebration, but is it when this era produced so many dark moments? That's also a reason why I believe the hall needs Frank in on the first ballot. So now we should induct players based on how much fun they had? I get your point, and I'm sure there are exhibits showing how much fun baseball could be. Mark probably already has a place in the building with his perfect game. But we are talking about inducting the all-time best players into the HOF, not just guys that were friendly, nice, or likeable. And if guys became the best by cheating, then that's a whole different argument too, I'm not saying we should all worship them either.
  11. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 08:31 PM) Matt Moore with 11 Ks in 5 innings against the Yankees. Ladies and gentlemen - meet the AL version of Clayton Kershaw. I saw a stat yesterday that he was the first pitcher to strike out 11 Yankees in 5 IP or fewer. Ever.
  12. I tried to watch the Hawks game last night, but it was almost as bad preseason football. Carcillo looked like a 1st-liner out there. I don't if anyone is using our season tickets tonight, but I sure as hell don't have much of an urge to go.
  13. QUOTE (danman31 @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 11:32 PM) That wasn't a shot at Illinois. It was a realistic statement. I don't see Illinois winning the Big Ten as long as Ron Zook is the coach. I would think many Illinois fans would agree with that statement. However, if you doubt Illinois is a bottom feeder, look no further than their conference record. In the last 9 seasons Illinois has one winning season in conference play with a record of 21-51. Do I expect Illinois to win a Big Ten title under Zook? No. But I would never say it's unimaginable. With the right combo of talent and scheduling, they have shown they can grab a title or two occasionally. They have a sophomore QB who has already shown tons of ability too. In the last 4 seasons, they are 15-17 in conference. Ron Turner turned the program into a joke and its been a long battle back out of that mess.
  14. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 06:14 PM) Double 6-6, bases loaded, still one out. Ouch Wow. If it wasn't for the bullpen, they would have the WC and might be close to the BrewCrew. Motte had actually been awesome the last month or two
  15. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) Cardinals off to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning. Could be one back with 6 left, and a cake schedule. If they do win the WC, the Edwin Jackson trade will probably be what gave them the extra win or two they needed, lol.
  16. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 12:27 PM) I realize that. I was talking just this year. From '07 to '09, Drew produced an .875 OPS and sound defense. He's been hurt the last couple years. Yeah, they're paying for him. But he's not one of the reasons their offense is as good as it is. Ortiz: $12.5 million Youk: $12.250 million Gonzo: $6.3 million Pedroia: $5.75 million Ellsbury: $2.4 million That's five regulars producing at an all-star to MVP level for less than $40 million. Pay-Rod, Tex, Jeter, Swisher, and Posada are making damn near $100 million. Now that's the team in which you could say, "Well, look at what they're paying for that offense." Not the Red Sox. That also ignores the fact that A-Gon & Tex have very similar contracts from 2012 on. Also, you are excluding Crawford/Drew on one side, while not including Cano or Grandy on the other side. How much does Posada even play anymore anyway?
  17. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 02:59 PM) Remember when some of us thought Beckham may be a great talent? Gordon Beckham 377 games - 324 hits Starlin Castro 277 games - 338 hits 100 games less and 3 years younger. That's something. After 277 career games, Juan Pierre had 343 hits
  18. QUOTE (danman31 @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 02:23 PM) That's an unfair example because can you imagine Illinois winning a Big Ten title now anyway? Sure it will happen someday, but with where the program is it's not going to be anytime soon. I guess your argument is that Illinois' best teams (01 and 07) wouldn't have made BCS bowls in the SEC, which is a reasonable argument. Absolutely. They aren't favorites, but it's not unimaginable they win one in the next few seasons. Some have them as a darkhorse for it this season, if Wisconson stumbles somewhere.
