  1. The charter plane for KHL's Lokomotiv team crashed en route to the opening game. 36 people dead, only one crew member survived. I think there may have been some ex-NHL players on the roster. I see Pavol Demitra listed on the Wikipedia roster, but don't know who exactly was on the plane. With the amount of air travel teams do nowadays, it was something that was gonna eventually happen again. Although way more likely in Russia with the poor quality of some of their aircraft.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 07:43 AM) BenBadler Ben Badler Woah RT @jcrasnick Chuck LaMar resigns from #Phillies. I gotta say that's a surprise. mlbtraderumors MLB Trade Rumors The Phillies announced that assistant GM of player development and scouting Chuck LaMar has resigned. Has he been seen shopping for homes on the North Side recently??
  3. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 07:36 AM) Here's my hope for next year. There has to be someone that will take Rios if the Sox pick up 1/2 to 3/4 of his salary. It will be worth it to get him off the team and will save some money. But getting him off the team alone would be worth it. It may be time to let MB go, only because I don't see him taking a big pay cut to stay, nor should he. But he's probably been the biggest beneficiary of the 6 man rotation. It would be very tough to let him go but you have to at some point. I re-sign Danks to a long term deal. Next, I use Carlos Quentin to acquire Andre Ethier from LA(2 arbitration elg. players). He's playing hurt and has been feuding with management over his injury. My last move, dependant on his health is try to acquire David Wright from the Mets(use Thornton, Morel, spects in a deal). What good does that do? You are spending $3-4 million more for a player coming off his worst season, that may be a marginal improvement at best?
  4. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 01:36 AM) They would need someone to take their other sports, id say f*** you if it didn't include football Texas's other sports are above average as well, I think a conference would be willing to sacrifice for that.
  5. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 07:16 AM) To combine a couple different ideas from this thread, how about Rios for Zambrano? How much of Rios' contract would the Sox have to eat to get the Cubs to do that? Not that I like Zambrano, but you're stuck with him for one year instead of three, and a worthless pitcher is easier to hide on your roster than a worthless position player. I disagree. You can still use Rios as a 4th OF, let him start once/twice a week, and it wouldn't kill your team. He still has value as a pinch runner too. Zambrano would just be wasting a spot in your bullpen. What if you need a long reliever or a game goes to extra innings? Then you will have to pitch him. Do you think he's gonna be happy on the bench? He already has blown up on his team as the ace, hiding him in the bullpen will probably piss him off even more.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 09:00 PM) Ozzie tol the twins announcers peavy might shut down after tonight. I heard that earlier this week as well....Hence the gamethread title
  7. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 06:06 PM) Floyd doesn't compare with Marcum? Unfortunately no. Marcum has performed way better in the world's toughest division. Floyd might actually have the stuff to be as good, but he can't perform consistently enough with it, and at this point in this career, no reason to expect differently.
  8. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 06:33 PM) Detroit is kicking ass. So that is what it looks like when a team gets hot offensively. Are you paying attention Adam & Alexis???
  9. QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 07:44 AM) So I was watching Law & Order: SVU the other day, and while investigating a case, one of the questions was (paraphrasing),"What happened on October 26th, 2005?", and Stabler responded....."The White Sox won the World Series." Thought that was pretty cool. Sweet, I need to find that episode! The wife constantly has that show on, so I've seen plenty of them.
  10. QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 03:45 PM) Would he have been the first rookie to throw a perfect game if it wasn't for Valencia? I believe so, depending on how rookie is defined. From what I can see, the closest player to a rookie was from the White Sox. Charlie Robertson in 1922 pitched a perfect game in his 4th career start. He had made one start in 1919, then didn't pitch again til 1922.
  11. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) The NFL/NBA/NHL/MLB packages are all part of the regular cable subscriptions yo. You might be paying 5.99 for hte sports tier, which gives that s***ty tennis channel and those other random ones. That sports tier also includes NFL RedZone. Maybe it went down to 5.99. Interesting. I signed up for it like 4 years when ago when the NFL Network first started showing games and it was only on the sports package. I guess all those channels got added to standard in the past few years. Just checked my bill and I'm paying 5.99 for some sports ent package. Good to know.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) ESPNChiSox Doug Padilla Twins have Benson leading of in CF, Parmelee batting 5th at 1B and Hendricks starting. All making major-league debut. Who are these f***ing guys?
  13. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) Marc Silverman reported on his radio show this morning that chairman Reinsdorf will make a contract offer to Guillen when the team returns home. Walker better be gone then
  14. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 02:17 PM) Nevertheless, can't we conclude that the 100-win Cardinals were winning an awful lot of games against some of the worst teams in baseball that season, and that their 100 win season might not have meant quite as much as, say, the 99-win White Sox? The Royals were the worst team in baseball that season by a whopping 11 games worse than the nearest competitor. I know that the AL was better than the NL. I just don't think you can write off any team that wins 100 games, especially because of one 7-game series against the hottest team in baseball. It's never easy to win 100 games in a season, no matter what your division looks like.
  15. They also re-signed their VP of player personnel Oneri Fleita to a 4-year extension. An interesting move if you are looking to clean house and bring in a new GM.
  16. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 01:50 PM) The 100 win Cardinals who lost the NLCS to a team they finished ahead of by 11 games? How good could they be if they couldn't win a 7-game series against an 89-win NL team? The interleague record that season was AL 136- NL 116. Sample size much?
  17. I hope MIN's Aussie pitches like our Aussie did on Sunday.
  18. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 01:12 PM) NFL RedZone Channel for 7 bucks per month for XFinity subscribers each and every year. /jizz Is that the same sports package that includes the actual NFL Network, the NBA & NHL, Fox Sports Soccer, and some tennis/golf channels? I could have sworn I pay $5.99 a month for those.
  19. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 12:39 PM) The '06 Twins started 14-19 and bottomed out at 7 games under .500 at 25-32. The '05 Astros did start 15-30 (12-21 in the first 33) and did make the playoffs, but the NL and particularly the NL Central was a far inferior league/division at that time. The '83 White Sox started 13-20, bottoming out at 16-24. What about the 100-win Cardinals?
  20. QUOTE (stretchstretch @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 10:37 AM) just for laughs, what would the Sox and Tigers respective records need to be the rest of the way out for the Sox to win the division? If the Tigers go 15-6, the Sox have no chance to even force a playoff. If Detroit merely plays about .500 ball, 10-11, the Sox would need to finish 19-4 to force a one game playoff.
  21. QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 6, 2011 -> 02:00 AM) Joe Maddon. Look at the lineup he throws out there everyday. The Rays would be in the playoff race if they weren't in the AL East. That Rays team started off worse than the Sox and are 7 games better with a quarter of the salary. They're a superior organization in almost every way - including the GM, the manager, and the coaching staff. There's a reason why a lot of people are clamoring for Dave Martinez. He's in one of the most well-runned organizations in baseball and he's been under a manager in Maddon that applies statistics to his strategy and runs a good clubhouse. Longoria, Zobrist, Joyce, Jennings, Damon, Kotchman, Upton. That's better than anything the Sox have. Shields, Price, Hellickson, Davis, Niemann. One of the best rotations in the game. Maddon is a good manager, but let's not act like he doesn't have any talent on his team. They are screwed because they play in the AL East though and nobody cares about baseball in Florida.
