  1. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 10:10 PM) The point is you don't say that at all. When you have a manager that does, that is a huge issue. If the players feel that their manager doesn't believe in them, then the current game speaks for itself. Cause the players get all their motivation from the media of course.Do you really think he said that to them in the clubhouse? Do you think the bullpen had that in their mind on Saturday? Did MB56 hear that and is that what caused him to get blasted?
  2. LOL, the Sox play again in 14 hours and in 21 hours. 695 miles away.
  3. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 09:49 PM) I do think people really over-react on Ozzie about the relievers sometimes. Every fan of every team gets upset about their manager's use of relievers. It's a matter of fact with today's brand of baseball. Unless you are a Braves fan and you have Venters/Kimbrel, but even then you complain that he over-uses them.
  4. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 09:49 PM) You never say anyting like that before an important series, period. No manager would do that. I'm sure they wouldn't but that comment deserves 0% blame for the sweep. I'm sure in the locker room he said something completely different. I know Ozzie has done a s*** job this season, deserves to be gone but I'm amazed by how upset people get about joke BS comments to the media. What do you want him to say? Maybe he's trying to keep it loose. You don't know what he said in the closed clubhouse.
  5. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 09:43 PM) If Guillen is not fired at the end of this road trip I think it only means Williams is gone too. I know he gets a LOT of flack, but chairman Reinsdorf is not a dumb guy. He knows massive changes need to be made. Firing him now does nothing. The season is over, wait til October. Maybe Florida is crazy enough to trade LoMo.
  6. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 09:41 PM) I think it's safe to say that the other 29 managers in MLB wouldn't say "I hope we don't get swept" just before an important series. You are right, but would that have changed anything? It's not like that was his pep talk to the team in the locker room.
  7. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 09:37 PM) I feel bad for the Aussie. Totally. After reading about how his mom spent $4k to fly over just to see him pitch Friday, I do feel a bit bad for the kid. Especially since DET is proving he is probably not ML capable.
  8. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 08:57 PM) Ozzie has completely lost the team. Even Konerko is playing like he doesn't care anymore. I turned the game off about a half hour ago. If they don't care why should we? I don't know if any manager could get this team to play harder today. After that loss yesterday, I didn't expect any more. The casket is closed. College football started last Thursday, NFL starts this Thursday.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 08:53 PM) Is Buehrle a mental midget? He was during the 2005 regular season & playoffs
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 06:33 PM) Sorry, meant the throw-away part with holding Verlander back and then going with Turner, Perry and Coke. I'm not complaining, if they pitch Verlander in this game, it's likely another win for them we'd have to make up the rest of the way. BTW, is Al Al expected back soon? Speaking of Coke, these are his numbers in August as a reliever: 12 IP, 8 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 20 K So much for converting him to a starter
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 08:26 PM) No one really complains about losing most udfas. With the way things are going now, you don't think a few people would? I guarantee it.
  12. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 06:20 PM) That brings up the question of why AJP was sent to AAA to rehab when he could have been with the Sox. If AJ was here I would have taken my chances with him pinch hitting over Dunn. I think you wanna make sure he is ready to play, especially since he is a catcher and you can't just play around with that roster spot.
  13. Lucas Harell starts tomorrow for the Astros. I'm sure if he somehow magically shuts down the Brewers, several threads will pop up in PHT calling out KW, but whatever. Good luck to him, seemed like a good kid. I was at his MLB debut when he beat Oakland last year. He hasn't won since.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 05:48 PM) Seems like this was a throw-away game for Leyland, as he didn't use Benoit. When would he have used Benoit? They were losing by the 7th, he pitched two innings two days ago, and they have six straight games against the Sox & Indians coming up. I'm sure if they were up in the 8th, he would have pitched.
  15. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 01:35 PM) Hard to win more than one of the four-game series in Detroit.
  16. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 02:49 PM) Good, Maybe it will make players think about committing to an institution with a shady track record. Im pretty sure that recruiting is the area where a lot of the rules are broken, so as a recruit you have a pretty good idea about what teams are playing by the rules and which are not. You feel bad for the kids who had nothing to do with it, but at the same time does anyone honestly believe that Miami/OSU recruits had no idea what was going on? That they were all shocked? Are you serious? How about kids that commit to a "clean" school, then has teammates commit infractions while they are there? Then he is forced to play his last two years under NCAA probation, while he did nothing wrong. Should he have know better? And how is a HS kid supposed to know every shady deal going on at every college in America? Come on now.
  17. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 12:36 PM) What inning will the Tigers come back today? I'm thinking they skip the dramatics and take the lead in the 5th. Damn, off by one inning
  18. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 01:19 PM) lol College athletes get "paid". Anyways, the reason they still have to play is that other teams have that team scheduled as well. For example, if Wisconsin couldnt play OSU this year, Wisconsin would be penalized as well. That doesnt seem fair now does it? So the penalized team still plays its games, it just cant reap the rewards. Do you think Miami & Cam Newton are the only players who got paid? Money exchanges hands like that at every university. It also doesn't seem fair to make a team play for no prize at the end. Especially when it's players who had nothing to do with the violations that occured.
  19. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 12:58 PM) Konerko could wind up with some better numbers than Thomas. This could be an interesting debate...who is/was a better player? Konerko is still a work in progress if you are comparing the two...but... Career Hits: PK: 2008, FT: 2468 Career Average: PK: .283 FT: .301 Career HRS: PK: 393 FT: 521 Career RBIs: PK: 1248 FT: 1704 Career Rs : PK: 1003 FT: 1494 Career OBP: PK: .359 FT: .419 Career Slugging: PK: .502 FT: .555 Konerko would have to play at least 4-5 more years to catch Thomas in some of these departments like HRs, RBIs. He has a good chance of getting more hits than Frank (maybe 2 1/2 - 3 years away?). Also have to think about defense and other intangibles. Speed...Thomas is faster and 32 SB to PK's 9. lol! Those are 3 stats where there is a huge difference between the two, that Paulie would have a very hard time catching up to Frank in. Especially the last two.
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 01:01 PM) Well they are presumably banned from postseason is a punishment, so I prefer a conference who actually cares about rules and wants to have penalties. If you want to win the Big 10 conference you have to follow the rules. Otherwise lets just get rid of all the nonsense and pay college football players. They already do get paid. So you let a team play in the big 10, but not let them win it? What's the point?
  21. What inning will the Tigers come back today? I'm thinking they skip the dramatics and take the lead in the 5th.
  22. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 12:13 PM) http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/...play-title-game It makes sense (barring a team who cant play in postseason from the CCG), just surprised the Big 10 actually is doing it. It doesn't make sense to me. Just because a team can't play in a bowl game, why can't they win their conference? Just give the automatic bid to the other division winner.
  23. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 10:46 AM) For the record: Ozzie made a number of gutsy calls in the '05 postseason that other managers may not have made. Buehrle to close out game 3 at Houston bringing in El Duque in Boston leaving starters in for the duration instead of Manuel-ing the game by insisting on maintaining bullpen roles I wouldn't call those first two calls "gutsy". Both happened because Ozzie had no faith in Marte, which was warranted. In game 3, the entire bullpen had been used, so it's not like he had any other options. Against Boston, Marte loaded the bases, so you had to take him out. It was only the 6th, so you weren't gonna use a closer or set up guy, so the experienced long reliever was a solid choice. I will give him credit for the use of his starters vs. the Angels. So many managers automatically go to their relievers in the 8th & 9th, and he stuck with his starters who were hot, and it paid off obviously.
  24. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 10:11 AM) I don't say this too often for players, and I hope the length isn't too long as RBs definitely have the shortest "life span" of all the positions in the NFL, but if there's one guy who I want to see get paid on that team, it's Forte. The guy didn't holdout for an extension like 95% of other players do. He played in camp and is playing in the pre-season. Hasn't said one word about contract talks unless a reporter keeps asking him about it (and usually he'll just say he leaves that to his agent anyway/wants to just play football and not talk about it) and has just been a pure professional through and through with fans, the media, management, etc and just bust his ass off. Pay the man. I wouldn't worry too much about the length of the contract. The way those deals usually work, all the guaranteed money is up front, and it's easy financially to cut him if he breaks down. It's the way of the NFL.
