  1. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 11:01 AM) I would love that. Ha. I have a feeling you would win that war.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 10:50 AM) No, what I was saying is I have no problem with Oney's response to Valentine's comment. Personally, say whatever you want about this s*** team, but for people to try to turn this into an anti-Oney thread (where it was headed) was silly. Maybe you don't have a problem with it, but most people do. Is he gonna go after every single person that criticizes his dad's performance? It's part of being a MLB manager, and it's part of the reason you are paid so handsomely. Valentine is paid to analyze the league and provide his opinions. And he never took any personal jabs at Ozzie, just asked why the teams is such an underachiever and why they seem to have no leader? You have criticized Ozzie this year, should Oney start e-mailing you and tweeting you? "How many games have you ever won in the majors Steve?"
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 10:15 AM) Which was all of the more reason the team needed more than a broke-ass Derrick Lee. I see your point, but who could they have traded for to keep them in the hunt? Ubaldo could have made sense because of his friendly contract, but he alone wouldn't keep them in the race. Should they really have gutted their system for rentals that may or may not have been available? I think the talent gap is too big this year to really go after it with only two months left.
  4. Mikel LeShoure out for the season with a torn Achilles. Sucks for the ex-Illini guy, and for the Lions who are hoping to compete this season.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 10:21 AM) I'm not saying all, but judging by the splits, you have to wonder if it is contributing, especially because it has gotten worse as people have stayed away, and those who have come have gotten more aggressive in their dissent. It could be true, although I would hope my team would be more mentally tough than that. However, their performance in April/May and some of those awful late losses really helped contribute to the fans dissent and their absence.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 10:09 AM) Maybe the booing and empty seats is adding up? So this year's lack of success can be directly blamed on lack of support from the fans?
  7. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 09:44 AM) Honestly, Valentine's tweet is the issue here. Ozzie at least has a World Series title, and Bobby Valentine clearly called him out with his tweet. I know it's the flavor of the millennium to rip on anything Oney Guillen, but in this case Valentine needs to be more diplomatic, given he's not just some nutty sportscaster, he is a former manager of the game. You just don't talk about other managers like that... there's a code. If Valentine wasn't already blackballed from the league comments like this will cement that status. So only people who have won world series are allowed to criticize Ozzie? What's the point of having sportscasters then? You would only have a few to choose from. Peter Gammons & Buster Olney have never managed, they better not criticize the White Sox or Ozzie at all. He's doing his job on TV questioning the job Ozzie has done this year with an underacheiving team. He didn't throw out any personal insults out there, he didn't question Ozzie's overall career.
  8. Wow, that's funny. Oney is something else.
  9. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 08:33 AM) The Pirates are a unique franchise. They still have good attendance (for the team they roll out every year), yet they are almost always essentially eliminated by the middle of July. I think having a winning (or even .500) season would be a huge step for them. I am surprised they didn't make more of a splash at the deadline, though. If their owners and GM are smart, they'll continue to build their youth while mixing in some impact veterans. Really? They have been 27th or lower in attendance every year recently, barely getting 20k. Now granted that with the teams they have the attendance should be 10k, but I still wouldn't consider that good attendance. They are in the bottom 5 every year, just like in the standings.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 08:45 AM) Yes. Maybe if they traded for 3-4 starting pitchers. Most of that rotation had been succeeding behind smoke & mirrors, and it finally came to fruititon this week, especially against the powerful Padres offense.
  11. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 02:22 PM) I wonder how happy professional athletes are when they manage to get out of Chicago? I'm sure bad, underacheiving athletes are happy to leave, but that would be true with any city. But for athletes who actually perform, they seem to love it in Chicago, many have recently signed extensions or re-upped just to stay here.
  12. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) Indeed. But Alonso didn't help himself by overrunning the ball, bumping into the wall, and almost falling over as the ball rolled behind him. It sounds like he took fielding tips from Soriano during pre-game warmups.
  13. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 07:43 PM) Jays called up stud prospect Brett Lawrie. Lucky for Brewers fans they are in first & Marcum has been solid, so they don't have to cringe if Lawrie tears it up in the majors.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 01:25 PM) I want to see a list of the 9 moves that got away, moves that helped KW ruin the franchise. No one is stopping you from making one, let's see it
  15. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 01:45 PM) Yonder Alonso just showing his defensive deficiencies against the Cubs horribly misplaying a single/double into an inside the park homerun. Dude needs a team with an open 1B spot. Tony Campana = very, very, very fast
  16. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 08:12 AM) There are decisions Guillen has made that other managers would not have made that are directly responsible for wins (sticking with Pierre when everyone wanted his head, and then he hits three GW hits) I'm having trouble identifying a single example in which Adam Dunn won this team a game. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CH...201106120.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CH...201107040.shtml
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 09:45 AM) Yes. It includes ballpark adjustments and is looking at things like strikeouts, line drive rates, flyouts, quality of defense, etc. It's not perfect, but if WAR is saying that a pitcher is a 1-2 WAR pitcher, that means he'd be an option as a rotation guy if he was on the Yankees, for example. Interesting, I didn't realize it took into account that many factors. I guess that's what the WAR projects him as, but personally I just have a hard time looking past the large discrepancy in his home/road splits. If he was put at the back end of the Yankees rotation, I'd be surprised if it didn't go badly for him IMO. On a side note, he has been out since early July and will miss the whole season after shoulder surgery. We will see how well he can recover from that.
  18. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 3, 2011 -> 10:13 PM) Well, I knew Cleveland would come back to earth, but the Sox didn't come around, needless to say. Games 55-108: Min 33-21 Det 29-25 Sox 28-26 KC 22-32 Cle 21-33 108 total: Det 57-51 - Cle 54-54 3 Sox 52-56 5 Min 50-58 7 KC 46-62 11 Tigers will win the division by 8-10 games. Cleveland was who we all thought they were. Unfortunately, the White Sox were bad too.
  19. QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 01:54 PM) The all-purple one is painful. As someone who goes to Welsh-Ryan to see the Illini play every year, I think it would be awesome. It could be quite a cool contrast if the Illini wore their orange. (If I was a NU fan, I'd probably hate the idea.)
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 07:51 AM) His Career Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) numbers hang just above 4. Yeah, he gets benefits from Petco, but he's still a reasonable back of the rotation guy. 1.5 WAR pitcher the year we traded him, 2.3 WAR pitcher last year. Does WAR take into account the fact that he pitches at Petco?
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 11:38 PM) Clayton Richard isn't the #2 starter he looked like in San Diego, but he is a solid #3-4 guy in any rotation. His career ERA away from Petco Park is 5.08. Bad.
  22. Buster_ESPN Buster Olney From Elias: NYY became third team in modern history to complete four-game sweep without allowing a walk. Others: '68 BOS, '05 Boston (AL).
  23. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 02:46 PM) Then what's going on this year, last year, and '08? LOL, it's just a saying??? -The bullpen did cost em several games to start this season (with JP's help),. -Last year's downturn started with an awful peformance by the closer. -I thought the main guys were solid in 08
