  1. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 12:47 PM) Alright. This has obviously evolved into me against the entire board. I'm done quoting 3-4 posters at a time. It is MY opinion that Bill Russell was/is overrated. It is MY opinion that Shaq, Hakeem, Robinson, Duncan, hell, even Dwight Howard, would violate him. I will not deny Russell's impact and what he's meant to the game, especially during those times (as a darkie, I can obviously appreciate that). But strictly basketball related, he doesn't impress me in comparison to other all-time greats. Wilt? He'd be a monster in any era. Russell? Yes, Ben Wallace. Ben Wallace has been so irrelevant for so long that it's easy to forget how good he was from '02-'06. I wasn't even trying to insult him by comparing him to Wallace. I deem it fair. 11 titles is going to make anybody look good. That's what people look at. And that's why he's ultimately overrated. I don't know if I agree with your Ben Wallace comparisons, but I do agree that he is overrated due to the titles in a league with only 8/9 teams. People just see the titles and automatically try to put him up in GOAT territory where he doesn't belong.
  2. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 12:38 PM) You don't seem to get it. The Padres didn't want the package we gave them. They settled for it. They wanted, and basically had to, rid themselves of his salary. They can't have one guy, especially a pitcher, taking up that much of their payroll. So by that criteria alone they win. We took on a humongous risk and Peavy to this point has been, well, s***. Now I keep hearing about this insurance policy. I have no idea what the Sox are actually saving or whatever. And I'm certain they won't divulge that info. But it certainly can't be enough to override the fact we've got expensive dead weight continually rotting on the DL. Any potential insurance policy doesn't make up for the fact that his salary could be spent on another healthy pitcher or two, instead of him perpetually on the DL.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 12:40 PM) Why aren't we discussing Bill Wennington? Best Canadian center of all-time
  4. QUOTE (kapzk @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 11:35 AM) Certainly KW won that trade for Jake Peavy, regardless even if Peavy's contributions have been limited I don't know about that. You can't just disregard the contract and the money the Sox are paying him, as well as the money the Padres saved by dumping him.
  5. QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 11:15 AM) You summed up what I was about to say in roughly 1/20th the words. Thank you. As for the second part, pretty sure he was saying that about Russell. I'm not exactly a Russell fan and JFL is right about that era being a completely different pace, but you don't end up as the best player on a championship team 11 times by accident. He also won 5 MVP's in an era where everyone still hated black people, so that says something about the respect he had around the league. A black player won the MVP award every year from 1960-1972, a period which encompassed 4 of Russell's MVP awards. His championships are impressive, but there were only 8 or 9 teams in the entire league back then, so winning a title was much easier back then. He also played with Cousy, Havlicek, among others, those were some talented Celtics teams.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 08:41 AM) I hope you get the idea though. Manning and Brady aren't complimentary players any more than Wade and James are. Miami was the only place where Lebron could have gone, maybe in the whole NBA other than the Lakers, where he wouldn't have been the guy. He went there so that he didn't have to be the guy all the time. I understand and agree with your idea on Lebron going to Miami. Just the Manning/Brady comparison makes no sense IMO, because only one of them would play at any given time, so it wouldn't matter. The concept of two #1 scorers on the same team is new, but both players are playing most of the game and both have a large effect on the outcome. Manning would be sitting on the sideline the entire time.
  7. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 08:45 AM) It wouldn't surprise me much if Konerko was juicing. He looked much more chiseled at the start of the season last year from what I could tell. Or maybe he just got into better shape. Building a 16,000 square foot home in Scottsdale with your bare hands would get anybody into better shape.
  8. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 12:56 AM) I start my 1st day of work tomorrow. Hello, real world. Don't do it!!! There's still time to stay in college and be irresponsible!!!
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 08:34 AM) You've got the wrong comparison. This one would be Peyton Manning, circa 2005, deciding to sign with the Patriots. Some people would say "Wow, that will be amazing". I might. But it'd still be Manning deciding to be Brady's 2nd hand. That doesn't work though, because Manning wouldn't play at all. He'd be a bench warmer, you don't play 2 QBs. LeBron still played and his team still needed him to play well to win the title, which they didn't. In your example, the Patriots could win the Super Bowl without Manning playing a single down.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 04:08 AM) It was more of an "intellectual exercise" to show what a difficult position KW finds himself in. He's not in this position though. The team is competing, JR will not suddenly make him dump a little bit of money. Not to reuse the stupid team motto, but they are "All In". It's either compete for the division, or get rid of everybody you can.
  11. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 07:47 AM) Dave Duncan is better. But Coop is probably the only member of the coaching staff earning their paycheck. Coop turns around underacheivers with talent. Duncan takes garbage pitchers and somehow teaches them how to get people out, he's definitely the best out there.
  12. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 08:16 AM) Padres just DFA'd Aaron Poreda. Good thing we didn't hold onto him. Another great 1st round draft pick
  13. QUOTE (joeynach @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 12:24 AM) I checked out TBD's for the first time after the Sox/As game on Thurs night. We went over there right away to catch Game 5 of the Heat/Mavs game is did most of the people who came out to another stellar 48 degree June Day. I thought the bar was great, awesome layout, good atmoshpere, of course overpriced beers ($6 for a miller lite can). Question is what are they building just to the east of the bar and the gate 5 area. That area is always under some sort of construction and its continues to this day, but what are they building now? All of the large signs says "New Sox Team Store: Coming Soon". So I imagine it's some kind of apparel store?
  14. QUOTE (zenryan @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 08:10 AM) "Absolutely not. Because at the end of the day, all the people that was rooting on me to fail, at the end of the day they have to wake up tomorrow and have the same life that they had before they woke up today. They have the same personal problems they had today. I’m going to continue to live the way I want to live and continue to do the things that I want to do with me and my family and be happy with that. They can get a few days or a few months or whatever the case may be on being happy about not only myself, but the Miami Heat not accomplishing their goal, but they have to get back to the real world at some point." ---James post game That quote just kind of explains it all. Watching that press conference, the difference between Wade and LBJ was so apparent. Wade just seemed to understand it all so much more.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 12, 2011 -> 08:32 PM) Realistically, we didn't deserve to win the first game of the series, and Oakland didn't deserve the second. It evens itself out. Did we deserve to win the 3rd game of the series? No clutch hits, scoring on WPs & errors, and having to take back home runs to win the game. It doesn't matter how you win though, just get it done
  16. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 12, 2011 -> 10:14 PM) I now realize how weak the eastern conference really is. The Mavs totally exposed the Heat as frauds. I concur. That's why I worry the Bulls blew their best chance, they only faced one good team and lost to them. The East can only get better one would think.
  17. I've never enjoyed a championship for a team I don't care about as much as this one. Just seeing Dirk's emotion, then Kidd, Terry, Marion, and of course Mark Cuban. Awesome. The Dallas fanbase seems pretty good too, good for the Mavs.
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 12, 2011 -> 02:14 PM) LOL at how slow Paulie is. He's probably the only non-catcher in baseball who doesn't get to second on that
  19. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 12, 2011 -> 02:11 PM) Liriano tossing another no-no. Glad we miss him this week. I think it's a perfect game going through six
  20. Is that a Gold Glover over there at first base?
