  1. QUOTE (Ranger @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 12:05 PM) Because it's fairly large risk in the 9th inning of a tie game. Yes, he's gonna steal bases, but he's not going to do it at a 100% rate. Runner at 2nd with Quentin and Konerko coming up provides a pretty damn good chance to drive in that run. This isn't to say that he won't ever attempt a steal in a similar situation, but it's not going to happen every time. It's a risk worth taking in a tie game. It might not be in a game where the team is down a run though. Rafael Perez was pitching, he takes a long time to deliver to the plate because of his high leg kick. Marson's a mediocre defensive catcher. Pierre has a 75-80% chance of nabbing that base. If Juan is caught stealing. You have Beckham, Quentin, and Konerko coming up anyways. Either way, you lose an out. But the rewards of the stolen base is much higher than the reward of the bunt. Giving up an out is not smart, especially when the guy up is Gordon Beckham. Unless you're going to bunt somebody over to third there, it's not a good idea. Plus, Ozzie played right into Acta's hands there.
  2. QUOTE (Ranger @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 12:06 PM) Beckham, by the way, is not this team's best hitter just yet. I know we're all excited about watching him develop at this level, but I think we should also reel it in a bit. He's the best pure contact hitter on the team, which in that situation says he is the best hitter on this team.
  3. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 10:25 AM) Last night, a lot of people complained about how Ozzie had Beckham bunt twice in yesterday's game. While I am an advocate for using the bunt, I also agree that it's kind of wasting Beckham's bat, so I was thinking of other ways Ozzie can alter the lineup to take advantage of Beckham's bat. First, I really don't think Beckham should be batting #2 if Ozzie is gonna be calling for a bunt a lot. I think the #2 hitter should be someone else so that Beckham can be moved to a different spot in the lineup to take full advantage of his bat. What if we put Teahen in the #2 role, and move Beckham to #5? I know it messes up Ozzie's l,r,l,r thing, but it'd prolly look like this: 1. Pierre l 2. Teahen l 3. Quentin r 4. Konerko r 5. Beckham r 6. Kotsay/Jones l/r 7. Rios r 8. Pierzynski l 9. Ramirez r Basically, instead of leading off with a lefty then a righty, the Sox should lead off with 2 lefties so that we can move Beckham to #5 and move Kotsay/Jones one spot down to #6. The Sox already has two lefties in a row with Pierzynski and Teahen in the 7 and 8 spots right now, so I don't see any reason why we can't have two lefties bat in a row in the #1 and 2 spots instead. I guess my point is, if Ozzie wants to have the #2 guy bunt the #1 guy over, it doesn't really have to be someone that's a good batter, just someone that knows how to lay down a bunt to move the batter over, someone like Teahen would fit the bill if he knows how to bunt. I also think it should be Teahen since Pierzynski would be too slow and I don't remember ever seeing him bunt, and it would also waste Rios' and Alexei's bats in the lineup if they were batting #2 and always bunting. So it should be Teahen since we're not expecting much from him anyway, and he would prolly see better pitches in the #2 hole if he has Quentin batting behind him. I'd rather have Teahen bunt than Beckham.
  4. I gotta say, at least Teahen's taking some walks, so his offensive contributions haven't been completely useless.
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 12:16 AM) So what's gotten into Vernon Wells? HGH.
  6. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 12:16 AM) Could be Boston tho. He sports the black and white a lot.
  7. QUOTE (PeavyTime @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 12:13 AM) I'll put $100 on our DH having better numbers than Thome. Now obviously Thome won't have as many at-bats, but take his numbers and multiply them out over the number of at-bats that our DH has better numbers. I guess you can just say its a hunch. I really doubt that Jones and Kotsay combine to hit anywhere near a .850 OPS. Especially if Kotsay has his way in this lineup.
  8. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 12:05 AM) I wonder if Oz would have wanted Thome if he knew he'd sign with the Twins. It's going to suck having to face him so many times this season. Compare our NEW DH option to the old one. Much worse. No. He probably knew. There were rumors flying around that the Twins had major interest. Unfortunately, when a player really wants to come here, we don't welcome him because of our selfish manager, who really wants it to have it his way. If we didn't trade Brian Anderson last year, Thome would be on this team.
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 11:09 PM) Strike zone sure has gotten larger. The umpire wants to go home.
  10. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 11:06 PM) Well, the bunt worked perfectly for Cleveland cause they have some professional hitters who CAME THROUGH in the clutch. Put the blame where it lies: Paulie and Jones couldn't get a f***ing bloop hit to win it. Konerko hit the s*** out of the ball, but right at Sizemore. Had Ozzie decided to run Pierre and had Pierre succeeded, a bunt by Beckham would have been fine. And then Konerko's line drive scores Pierre. We would all be happy right now.
  11. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 11:05 PM) 8 hits in 19 innings against the Indians pitching staff. Stop. So we have a bad offense and then our manager makes it worse. Ozzie isn't the whole problem, but the fact that he's supposed to be helping the team when he's clearly not is pissing me off.
  12. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 11:02 PM) I like how the main excuse is Beckham bunting twice. We've scored 3 runs in back to back games against the f***ing Indians. And bunting isn't going to help your offense. That's two outs we shouldn't have given up.
  13. QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 11:00 PM) Jones steals bases and goes 1st to 3rd on singles. he's fast enough. But he's not Choo, Valbeuna, or Sizemore fast.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 10:59 PM) I think Hafner does not score if Rios was playing RF on that double. Probably.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 10:58 PM) Pierre, Beckham, Jones/Kotsay, Rios, Ramirez? That's 5 spots that can genuinely run. Quentin can score from 1st on a double while healthy. I have no clue on Teahen. Konerko and Pierzynski are slow, but come on, Hafner? Redmond/The other guy? Neither Jones and Kotsay are fast.
  16. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 10:57 PM) Speed and defense. That is how to get a big hit. It would be great if we used our speed and played good defense. That's why we're going to lose this game.
  17. There's game. Mark Teahen, why did you bother to try?
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 10:55 PM) To me, it was the exact same situation. Gordon Beckham isn't Mickey Mantle (yet) and Juan Pierre isn't Rickey Henderson. And Lou Marson isn't even Gordon Beckham.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 10:53 PM) Somebody said Manny Acta wouldn't bunt. The exact f***ing same thing. All managers bunt in that situation. Believe it. Pierre is faster than Valbuena. And you have freaking Lou Marson up.
  20. Mark Teahen needs to take some Physics classes and learn about angular momentum.
