QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 10:47 PM) It was the .224 batting average that got me. Plus, Alexei's glove flip to Paulie easily tops anything Nix has done. I think I've found out why people vote offensively qualified players for gold gloves. They just like them more for it and if you can play defense, then that's just an add-on.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 10:49 PM) Probably, but Nix did do some pretty wacky s*** at 2b in that ESPN ass-kicking we took against the Rangers. Don't forget about that hit he saved Colon against the Angels where he ranged about half the infield to get a screaming liner off of Rivera's bat. What angers me at times is people complaining about some error that Nix made. Truth be told, the majority of the time, your usual second baseman doesn't get to the ball Nix gets to.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 10:51 PM) Former Stanford player. Wonder if KW is looking at him.. s*** I would take him as a 1B/DH, though I'm sure KW wants a LH stick. Dude has a career .351 OBP and he looks primed for a bounce back year after being brutal in that big SF park. Wonder if Seattle is looking at Kotchman more as potential. I'd rather have him than Mark Kotsay. He'd get much more playing time than Kotsay, although his defense at 1B isn't all that great.

You'd think people would like Nix for his awesome range and his flashy plays, but nooo.... I remember that people loved Alexei at second and he made boneheaded plays there too.
-
For a team that needs offensive help, I don't think that's a good move at all.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 06:04 PM) Do you think Twins have the best lineup in MLB? Buster Olney does. PS: Video. That's just ESPN trying to create some kind of a non-story. There's no way the Twins have the best lineup in baseball. The Yankees, Red Sox, and Phillies all have better lineups.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 10:09 AM) Did you see the allstar game last year? Or the playoffs in 05? Obama has given plenty of love. He has some duties and pretending to support DC sports is one of them. GWB did it too I believe Didn't Obama throw the first pitch out last year too though?

I really don't see the Indians finishing any higher than 3rd.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 08:35 AM) The Nationals get the President for their first pitch. Ridiculous... Why can't we get some love here?

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Mar 29, 2010 -> 03:31 PM) No...no he did not.....really? My goodness. Do people really have this hard of a time with the spelling of "Teahen"? I mean, I expect it from a name like Jeff Samardzija. But Mark Teahen? Tea Hen. Come on...

Cubs promote OF Tyler Colvin to MLB
chw42 replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in The Diamond Club
This is a bad idea. This guy can't draw a walk to save his life. Have real pitchers throw to him and he's going to hit .250 with a .280 OBP. Ugly. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 11:14 PM) Like I said, some of the complaints are valid. I agree that some of the complaining is over the top. I used to be one to dismiss UZR and go strictly with my eyes. But as I've read and studied (not just UZR, but sabermetrics in general), I've come to accept and, more importantly, understand them more. And the value they bring to the table. But they're not bulletproof. How does Adam Jones go from being a + defender to a negative defender in one year? Did he have a range slump? Those kinds of questions are legitimate. They're legitimate to a point. A one year sample of UZR is not enough to prove the defensive capability of a player. UZR needs a large sample size, which is one of its down falls. To simply call out a large fluctuation one year and say, "hey, this doesn't make sense at all, this stat sucks" is ignorant and that's what a lot of people do.

QUOTE (JDsDirtySox @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 10:11 PM) Yes Santos is Pitcher #12... So the final roster spot is basically a 13th pitcher or Nix. What's the use of a 13th pitcher when we have one of the best rotations in baseball?
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 05:55 PM) Some of the "b****ing" is legitimate. Everybody knows what the flaws are. But it's the best tool we have right now (emphasis on right now). And it looks like it's only going to evolve. I might just get that book. Looks like a really interesting read. It's like being a spoiled child. Would you rather have UZR or would you rather have fielding%? To totally disregard it for its few flaws and constantly b**** about it is not something you should do, especially when it's the best thing out there right now.
-
Santos is on the team already right? If that's the case, definitely Nix.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 02:31 PM) In the next two to five years the baseball world is gonna advance in monumental proportions. http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/...ional_analysis/ Then people will finally stop b****ing about UZR being inaccurate...

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 11:14 AM) Which despite stats I'll call bulls*** on. He's not great anymore but he was one of the best defensive cf's I've ever seen for a long time and that lasted passed 2003. Perception vs. reality. It depends.
-
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 01:33 AM) Palmero winning one playing something like 20 games at 1b and Jeter winning multiple ones have made them completely worthless in my eyes, even when a White Sox player wins one or they occasionally get one or two positions right a year. You gotta wonder what percentage of baseball fans (casual and hardcore alike) actually think those two deserved it.
-
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 11:23 PM) Once Jeter stops winning them, the future of gold gloves in the SS position should be headed towards Texas every season. People around the league love Andrus way too much not to.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 07:09 PM) Didn't Hunter have a big drop-off the last couple of years? His last decent season was 2005. His last great one was 2003. His greatness on defense didn't last all that long.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 06:47 PM) Alexei might win one even though he kind of sucks as a SS, based on the criteria written. Alexei actually has good range though (+4.1), that's the thing. He just screws up routine plays, which shows up in his error runs (-1.8). Jeter's range is horrific (until this past year). So yeah, indeed, if Alexei gets his fielding% up, he'll get a gold glove and actually be a good defensive SS. As for White Sox winning it, it was sad to see Crede never get one, even when he was better than Chavez.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 07:06 PM) UZR doesn't take into account a player's arm. Hehe. I've had some people run into this one. It does, for outfielders. There's a component named ARM in UZR (at least the version on FanGraphs). Hunter's arm has been negative since like 2004 and it ain't pretty. So while Juan Pierre is perceived to have a crappy arm, his range actually makes up for it a lot.

Pfft, I struck out 21 guys with Peavy in a video game, it's so easy. But if you try and pitch a perfect game...forget about it. In all honesty though, Wood's game was more rare. But the accomplishment of a perfect game is far more challenging than striking out 20 guys. There are so many more restrictions in a perfect game. You're not restricted by anything when you strike out a bunch of guys. You can give up a hit there, hit there, run here, run there. Nothing counts against you.

How many games will this team win in 2010?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 04:58 PM) We look like a .500 team to me. I can't see the offense being very productive unless CQ just has a Pujols type year somehow. I am hoping we finish 10 over .500 somehow. That would take a lot of things going well. Pitching is king. The offense just has to be mediocre and it can do that. Hell, even PECTOA estimated that we'd score 780 runs, which is definitely good enough. -
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 05:57 PM) IIRC, he make bad reads on balls that are not hit deep. I remember in a playoff game, I think vs. the A's, he made a dive attempt on a ball he came in on, missed it by like 2 feet, and the batter got an inside-the-park HR. He's had some terrible years if you look at UZR and some not so terrible ones. He's just a mediocre fielder IMO regardless of what reads he really gets. The guy can make plays look nice, but some of those catches are easily made by Andruw Jones in his prime. He was once in the same tier Andruw, but those days are long gone. I personally think that Hunter's the perfect example of your criteria #4.
