QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 03:31 PM) But couldn't we say the same thing about Dye/Pods/Quentin last year defensively? Well, I just hope they don't sign Joe Mauer to a six-year contract today. That would really suck. And I'm not going to root for him to get injured...no matter what, you have to respect him as an opponent and admit he's become a truly great player. We don't have two of those guys anymore and Quentin's poor defensive season last year had a lot to do with his foot. The Twins still have all those three mentioned in the article. There lies the difference.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 02:15 PM) Hardy is not nearly the defensive SS he used to be and Hudson has been awful recently as well. Look at the other metrics... If you are going to measure a team's defense you have to include the bench, of course. The Sox have like 23 Gold Gloves available as replacements between Jones/Vizquel/Kotsay. Kotsay's below average, Jones is only above average at the corners, and Vizquel still has it. So yeah, the Sox have better bench defense. But for the most part, those guys will play the minimal amount of innings. The Twins have a hell of a left side infield defense. But their corner outfielders are terrible.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 01:03 PM) I had no idea that the defensive numbers of either Hudson or Young were nearly that bad. Delmon Young's always been terrible. Hudson's been on a steady decline for the past few years. Makes sense. Nice article about the horrendous Twins corner outfielder combo: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/pity-nick-blackburn Basically, Cuddyer and Young's defense erase any offensive value each brings to the table.

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 11:46 AM) People are overreacting to this move. Hudson is a good player, but he's not an elite 2b anymore. I mean, this is the guy who got benched in the 2nd half last year for Ronnie Belliard. He's not Chase Utley. The thing is, they had Alexi Casilla there penciled in before he was signed. Hudson >>>>>> 2009 Casilla. And I've thought about the defense on paper thing, the Twins and Sox are pretty much dead even in that department. White Sox Predicted UZR by a mix of my thoughts and CHONE Juan Pierre: 3.0 in LF Alex Rios: 2.0 in CF Carlos Quentin: -4.0 in RF Mark Teahen: -6.0 at 3B Alexei Ramirez: 2.0 at SS Gordon Beckham: 2.0 at 2B Paul Konerko: 1.0 at 1B Total Starter UZR: 0 Twins Predicted UZR Delmon Young: -10.0 UZR in LF Denard Span: 2.5 UZR in CF Michael Cuddyer: -9.0 UZR in RF Nick Punto: 3.5 UZR at 3B J.J. Hardy: 8.0 UZR at SS Orlando Hudson: -1.5 UZR at 2B Justin Morneau: 0 UZR at 1B Total Starter UZR: -4.5 Factor in the difference between Mauer and A.J. as catchers and you have yourself a pretty dead even defense on paper, in terms of value next season.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 7, 2010 -> 09:02 PM) Half the status updates in my Facebook news feed are females that are suddenly Saints fans probably because they have a crush on Reggie Bush and I bet some didn't even know New Orleans had a football team until last week... good for the Saints but I'm not pretending to be all excited. I'm not a Saints fan... you won't hear me jumping up screaming "who dat" This.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Feb 7, 2010 -> 09:18 PM) Did you by chance watch the game at Townsend Lounge A? And agreed on that play, I had a feeling that call cost them the game and I was pretty much right. Haha, no. I watched in the lounge in the basement with some of my friends. We had the TV to ourselves.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 7, 2010 -> 06:52 PM) And their pitching was worse at the Metrodome than on the road. It's usually not like that though. Before last year, the Twins were substantially better at pitching in the dome than on the road. Here's the ERA difference from 2002-2008. 2008: +.89 ERA 2007: +.70 ERA 2006: +1.14 ERA 2005: +.21 ERA 2004: +.31 ERA 2003: -.19 ERA 2002: +.76 ERA With the exception of 2003, the Twins have always fared better at home in terms of pitching. It's gotten even more drastic over the past four seasons. The current Twins pitching staff has been around since 2008, so it's fair to look at these past two season and realize that they're pretty much half a run better at home than they are on the road. I don't think it's unfair to say that their pitching should be worse next season.

I really questioned Indy's play calling in the red zone on that last drive. A delay on third down? Are they out of their minds?

Man, you really like 89-73 don't you?

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 11:22 PM) Well you absolutely should. That was pathetic. I agree. You beat a State team without their best player and you have to rush the court? We didn't win anything yet. -
They're basically trying to hold the other teams hostage. Best thing to do here is to not give in. You don't need the Cubs in Arizona.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Feb 4, 2010 -> 07:53 PM) Pretty much. Would YOU want to go play for the Nationals??? "Well, we offered him a steak on one plate and a bag of dog s*** on the other. We know he's hungry, and we think he's taking the steak, but we can't be positive since it's not a done deal yet." -douchebag on twitter This is a good point...

So anytime a team makes an offer, it's a done deal now? :\

Sox not adding a LH bat; looking at relief, Damon?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 2, 2010 -> 08:28 AM) Don't forget though that getting Scherzer and Jackson also cost them their #2 starter, Edwin Jackson. The reason why the Granderson move would make less sense is that they'd wind up with virtually zero cost savings, and they'd almost certainly be seriously downgrading from Granderson to Damon (Anyone think Damon's power won't vanish if he moves to Comerica from Yankee stadium?) I wonder why they beg the Tigers... It would take away a lot of his power. -
QUOTE (joeynach @ Feb 1, 2010 -> 12:29 AM) If Dye is getting 3 Mil and has terrible UZR which is keeping his price down...then Damon and his terrible UZR cant be far behind. Come on Kenny go get damon 1 YR 4 Mil. Dye is two times as bad as Damon in the OF while Damon was better offensively. Damon >>>>> Dye.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jan 30, 2010 -> 11:26 PM) Two of the best Sox blogs in the business summarize why there really is no excuse or KW to be deferring to Oz on personnel decisions. http://soxmachine.com/soxmachine/2010/01/2...llen/#more-1269 and http://www.southsidesox.com/2010/1/25/1269...ot-a-fan-of-the These are must reads IMO. Awesome stuff, right on line with my thinking.

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Jan 31, 2010 -> 02:04 PM) I dont think it'd matter if Damon wanted to come here and KW had money to pay him. I think Ozzie wants Jones/Kotsay to be his DH outfield help/rotation. Of course it wouldn't, it's just for the lulz.
-
My message...as Ozzie Guillen "Scott Boras f***ing sucks. Sign with us, I'll let you grow out your hair again. You can then be the baseball messiah for the White Sox. Viva la Venezuela b****es!"

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jan 31, 2010 -> 08:49 AM) I am thinking that the White Sox may have an agreement with Dye for a few million if he does not find work elsewhere to his liking not sure why it just feels that way. As long as Dye doesn't play the field, I'm perfectly fine with getting him back to DH. I'd rather have him than Kotsay or Vizquel.
-
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jan 30, 2010 -> 07:16 PM) Yes, I remember perfectly well that they don't have Bradley anymore, I also remember they have Fukudome who they are moving over there, it's why they got Byrd to play center and when the rumors were going around that's what the sources were telling Levine and the guys on the score. Fukudome is making around 10m and Dye would have been around 3m, they would have given Fukudome every chance to lose that spot Doh, totally forgot about Byrd.

QUOTE (chunk23 @ Jan 30, 2010 -> 11:36 PM) I would definitely slot the Mariners to take the west, with maybe the Rangers in second, A's 3rd and Angels last. The Angels have lost a lot of talent, have terrible D, especially in the outfield, and jeez that rotation is just a bunch of #4s. Their defense isn't that bad. I think the Angels have a legit shot at 85 wins. Mariners should take the division though with the Rangers second.

The Bulls should have a 7 game winning streak going into a tough game against the Hawks. -
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jan 30, 2010 -> 05:23 PM) with Sheets and Dye the Cubs were hoping that the myth that it's an honor to play for the Cubs was true and players would take less money or less of a role than they are looking for. Dye has said all along he wants to play the OF and be a regular player, so why would he go to the Cubs and be a 4th OF? If there's no offers for him out there for full time OF I could see him bending a little and playing a majority DH somewhere and occasional OF duty and if he can't find that, I wouldn't be shocked if he just retired. I still think the best fit for JD is San Francisco. I know he struggles in the OF, but it's the NL and I think his bat would come around and the Giants still need some offense IMO Why was JD going to be a bench player? RF was open for him to start. They don't have Bradley anymore, remember?

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jan 30, 2010 -> 05:23 PM) I'd love to see them add Downs over Williams. that could be a pretty sick pitching staff and with improved D behind it, the Sox could be a very stingy team. That would be the second best thing to happen. I'd rather take the money we're going to pay Downs and add a couple of million to it to sign Damon.
