  1. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 11:35 PM) The thing that makes it even more dumb, is not even about their offense as a DH. Vizquel is still very good defensively. You can't field when you are the DH in the lineup. Andruw Jones is still good in RF (serviceable in CF) You can't do that when you DH. Kotsay is very solid at 1B (meh to blah.. at the OF spots) you get the point. I would love this if say we got a solid LF/RF and Quentin was mainly the rotating DH guy who plays the field spelling guys. Or even Konerko in the infield if we got a very solid 1B (I was clamoring for N. Johnson all winter and it sucks that we missed on him) and you can rotate one of those guys spelling the other, just for their bat. But that is not the case. Vizquel's only value is his defense, his offense is Yuniesky Betancourt bad.
  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 10:58 PM) bmags has just touched on this, but I don't think a whole lot of people anticipated in midsummer of last year that Thome could be resigned for $2 million either. Then again, Mr. Rongey, no offense intended, but the vast majority of people that contact you via your show are reacting in an emotional, illogical, and/or enebriated manner. This. Don't judge whatever we think by the impressions you get from the people that call into your show, most of them aren't exactly baseball intelligent.
  3. QUOTE (Ranger @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 03:54 PM) I'm somewhat confused by this, as well. During the season, almost every bit of feedback I'd get on Thome was that fans were sick of his HR-or-nothing game and that they needed to trade/release/bench him. And now that he may not be coming back, people think the Sox need to sign him? Just because some people have a perception that Jim Thome sucks and wants him gone doesn't mean he actually does suck and should be off the team. Not everybody has the patience or the know how to evaluate a player's true value to a team, especially since this season is a completely different circumstance than 2008 or even 2009. Besides, back in 2008, Thome's power on this team wasn't as valuable as it would be now or even last season. This team is lacking a left handed slugger to hit home runs and provide good OBP, the team we have now would have problems hitting 150 home runs and the average starter's OBP might be in the .325 range. In a ballpark where the home run is king, you have to be able to hit your fair share to win. I'm all for the small ball and timely hitting, but you need your slugger in the middle to drive them home too.
  4. The best scenario happened in both of today's games .
  5. QUOTE (ChWRoCk2 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 09:13 PM) /Game Saints vs. Colts That's the matchup people were thinking when both were undefeated.
  6. That looked to be a first down. He got the ball across the first down marker it looks like.
  7. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 07:55 PM) The issue with backup infielders is we really don't need another CI in my opinion. It's the MI that worries me. Hudson would not fit here, IMHO. I'll take my chances with Thome, keep Nix, and go with 6 in the bullpen. Exactly, do we really NEED Randy Williams?
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 07:10 PM) i am hoping beckham can put up a .850 ops That'd be great, but that's not a guarantee by any means.
  9. QUOTE (quickman @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 06:58 PM) Ranger, this board has a tendancy to fall in love with players. That said, and I am by no means wanting thome back, Ozzie and KW have put themselves into this corner. They could have just cut bait and moved on. KW did not do a good job with this whole scenerio. They all like thome, he is a nice guy who does everything the whitesox want. Hire him as a bench coach after nobody picks him up. Are you serious? You'd much rather have him hit home runs for you. Do all of you seriously think that Andruw Jones and Mark Kotsay can give you enough production out of a DH spot, the most offensive oriented spot in the lineup? Thome is capable of putting up a .850 OPS, very few other players on this team can do that. Carlos Quentin and Paul Konerko might be the only ones capable of it at this point. Thome is an extremely valuable piece of the puzzle right now. Not because he's awesome, but because whatever we're going to use instead of him have proven nothing and will most likely produce nothing.
  10. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 12:52 PM) Buster Olney thinks Thome would be a wasted roster spot for us. Olney is really an idiot sometimes. A lot of outside people think this, I don't know why.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 10:41 AM) The fact we couldn't match 5.5 million in an offer for Nick Johnson pisses me off even more than we're wasting money on Mark Kotsay. And Omar Vizquel... Teahen + Vizquel + Kotsay pretty much pays for Johnson. I'd rather have Johnson than those three. I think Kenny has something up his sleeve, he usually doesn't BS like this.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 10:37 AM) Kenny Williams said that he made a multi-year offer to Bobby Jenks before they settled on the contract for one year that he got at $7.5 million. They also chased after Nick Johnson, but couldn't match the Yankees $5.5 million offer. They also couldn't afford Chad Tracy, all according to the CHicago Tribune. This is BS. Chad Tracy would have cost a couple million at best.
  13. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 02:38 PM) You say that but there are plenty of people who don't want to see Thome back. People don't like that he clogs the bases. Apparently having men on base is a problem. Who knew. And Andruw Jones and Mark Kotsay are light years faster of course... It's not like you're replacing him with anybody that much faster.
  14. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 07:51 AM) Got a 9.6 on IGN yesterday for the XBOX360. I'm more of a PC gamer, but currently my PC isn't good enough to play Mass Effect let alone Mass Effect 2. Gonna upgrade with the new Radeon 5850 on a new PC pretty soon though. Nice!
  15. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 07:48 PM) I'm f***ing psyched for Mass Effect 2. Anyone else? I played it for an hour yesterday. It's definitely more geared towards the casual crowd this time. I felt like I was playing a combination of Halo, Gears of War, and Mass Effect during my one hour sit down yesterday.
  16. QUOTE (The Beast @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 01:23 PM) Someone at SoxFest rag on Guillen and KW to get Thome signed. What do you guys think about the platoon at DH? Looking at the Sox roster, does it make sense to re-sign Thome? It doesn't sound like KW is too enthused about the possibility of bringing Thome back... Andruw Jones and Mark Kotsay or Jim Thome... I think it's obvious who we'd all rather have.
  17. So I see that Cowley's written an article saying that getting Thome is Ozzie's call...oh lawd.
  18. Angels really wanted him gone I guess.
  19. Ugh. Ozzie, I hope you're happy when Jim Thome kills us next year.
  20. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 04:21 PM) I can remember when KW talked about Jones and Kotsay as bench players. And now they are part of the DH. Awesome. You can tell that Kenny wants to sign a DH, but Ozzie's getting in the way here.
