QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 01:19 PM) Exact same things they said about A-Rod. Also, some steroids (specifically HGH) have been shown to improve vision. None of that has been medically studied. It's based on user's experience. There's no true medical and scientific proof that it improves vision.

I would not put that kind of money on a guy who has had one full healthy season and that being his rookie season. This would be like the Yankees signing Carl Pavano after he had one good season. Plus he had TJS, which is a definite bad sign for a guy who throws hard and also features a hard slider (Francisco Liriano anyone?)
-
Even if Pujols does take roids, the effects on him are questionable. Steroids do not give him a better batting eye. Steroids do not give him better place discipline. Steroids do not make his swing perfect and virtually hole-less Medically speaking, steroids do not improve eye-sight and they do not give a player faster reflexes. All it can do is give the player more muscle mass in the upper and lower body which can lead to farther hit baseballs and pitchers with more stamina (now do you wonder how Roger Clemens was still able to pump it up there in the mid 90s in his 40s?). And through past scientific experiments, it's not even a huge difference, but may be the difference between a double off the wall and a home run. This steroids thing is hyped up to be the thing where a guy who is on it might be 5 times better than the player who isn't on them and that's definitely not true. The true effects of steroids are still questionable. As there are guys who have been exponentially better after taking them (Brett Boone) and also many more who have failed in attempt to taking them (see long list of guys who sucked that were on PEDs, like Armando Rios or dare I say Timo Perez). Here's a nicely researched article on this stuff. http://steroids-and-baseball.com/

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 21, 2009 -> 05:29 PM) On another subject, Captain Cheeseburger was pulled after 1 1/3 inning today against the Marlins. Injury currently not disclosed. Why I drafted him in the first round in one of my leagues is still a question I am asking myself. The guy I drafted in the second to last round that I traded away has better numbers than him.

QUOTE (watchtower41 @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 12:46 PM) yeah matter of fact, I traded Torii Hunter for him straight up, and where I now I got fleeced on that trade as of right now, this kid is gonna rake in the 2nd half. He is eligible at SS and 3B which is HUGE and strike-out very little. He was owned by over 45% of mixed leagues by his second game in the majors. So, yes I actually have him in a fantasy league and already paying huge dividends. Fanboy or not, if you wait to pick up Saint Gordon, you will lose out on him. People know what he can do and the spark a rookie like him could provide outside of Chicago. If that's not a keeper league and you don't have outfield depth, that's a bad trade.

QUOTE (watchtower41 @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 10:17 AM) He scored 21 for me last week in fantasy. Way to be Becks! You actually have him in a fantasy league...?

Beckham has a BABIP of .214. I can see why he does because he makes a lot of contact. But having a BABIP about 85 points under league average is not going to last forever. It's going to start going up soon and you'll see Gordon do much better. So it looks like he's finally got it going now and knows what he's doing. I fully expect him to contribute offensively to this team for the rest of the season. Well, at least contribute more than Josh Fields. On defense, his UZR is a -0.6. Over a 150 game span, it's -5.9. Fields' was UZR/150 was in the -13 range. So Gordon's been twice as good as Fields defensively. The combination of Betemit and Fields had a combined UZR of -8.8. That's almost an entire win-share. So defense alone at third with both Fields and Betemit has caused the Sox to lose one game, although I'm pretty sure it was more. Because if Wilson Betemit played a full season at 3B for the Sox this year, he would have cost us 94 runs.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 09:56 AM) Where did the nickname Bacon Slayer come from? First time I've heard it. But I like it.

We're gonna need all the help we can get.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 09:40 AM) He seems to have found his comfort zone. Both Beckham and Getz have really impressed me lately. Seeing production out of the new young core is encouraging. The only thing I dont understand is the situation with Poreda. If he isn't getting the playing time he deserves why is he up here? Seriously. I'd much rather have Poreda pitch than Linebrink.

Thank you Jerry Hairston. Thank you Ramon Hernandez. Thank you Mark Buehrle. Thank you Gordon Beckham. Thank you Scott Podsednik. Thank you 2-run first inning. Good road trip despite two bad throws to first by Clayton Richard and a major screw up by Scott Linebrink.

QUOTE (ROC Sox Fan @ Jun 21, 2009 -> 02:40 PM) It wasn't until the Cubs series that Ozzie started to use Linebrink more. Thornton was the preliminary setup man for most of the year. Did he not remember what happened last season at Wrigley with Linebrink at all? -

Is Kenny telling Ozzie to play Linebrink so teams can have a look? Because you'd be selling awfully low right now because he looks like complete s***. I was pulling my hair out for Ozzie to get off his ass and take him out. Thank god Hernandez smoked one right at Alexei and Jerry Hairston screwed up or we'd be at least tied right now. -
Arroyo is the worst of the three starters we're gonna face. We're SCREWED.
-
This game really sucked.
-
Come on Bacon.
-
That run Dotel gave up really hurts now.
-
Maybe the offense won't suck as much without a guy throwing junk all the time.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 07:47 PM) Jerry Owens was one of the worst defensive outfielders I've seen, and no stat is gonna convince me other wise. I said the exact same thing when I first saw the stat of Plus/Minus the very first time. It does have its flaws, but it's a lot less flawed than a lot of other defensive stats out there. Because seriously, what other stat are you going to use to prove that somebody good is on defense? Are you just going to tell the other person you're having a discussion with that I watch him everyday and he sucks? Trust me, I've tried that. But numbers ultimately tell the truth. http://www.fieldingbible.com/ - There's an overview of how they calculate the numbers and how they can prove that it does indeed work.

Jose was either out of gas or he was questioning himself again. I'd rather have it be the first.
-
QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 07:17 PM) whyd you have to jinx it moron I was just thinking that if Jose gets one more out, he would have 20 scoreless innings. DOH!
-
Anybody hear Jackson's screeching on the radio?
-
Stoney's a great analyst. But a horrible play by play man. BTW, did any of you hear Darrin Jackson right before the Getz homer? It was a really weird moment... He was screeching and couldn't stop laughing.
-
Getz finally got one. He's been hitting much better as of late. He must like the NL.

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 06:48 PM) im always afraid of having sox, i feel like im jinxing them (as stupid as that is) i had floyd and danks to start the year, ive since dropped them both and they've pitched better I've had Danks for a while. I picked Floyd up in a league where I had Bedard and Volquez (both injured) and he was decent his last start.
