  1. I think you guys are overestimating how big the market is going to be for 300+ mil deals. If you include Stanton there's at least 3 of them to go around and the Yankees/Nats/Cubs/BoSox aren't going to sign multiples.
  2. If Stanton was a FA in 2019 with Bryce/Machado class, would you want the Sox to give 10/285m to a 29 year old corner outfielder? I'd rather offer that same deal to a 25 year old Machado
  3. QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 05:42 PM) As intriguing as that sounds...I just don't like the cost. I meant for the Yankees with Judge. If adding Stanton gave the Sox 100+ dingers that means Eloy or Roberts are awesome which I also am not opposed to.
  4. QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 05:09 PM) this is where I'm at. No thanks. Enjoy Yankee pinstripes Giancario..... Getting 100+ dingers out of your corner outfielders would be decent...
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:42 PM) You are literally the only reason I doubt my position on the rebuild.
  6. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 03:42 PM) I don't think anybody is coming at you maliciously, just curious as to your thinking now based on what you said at the time, which was almost 100% disappointment with the direction the club was going. Yep, no maliciousness unless you have Greg in your name. Genuinely curious as I just don't understand the mindset at all and have yet to see a logical defense of it.
  7. QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 03:07 PM) Because of that dang Yankees trade. It was light almost all around. That's why I and many others dropped their score from a 10. I gave it a 9. My favorite year in recent memory I'm not arguing a 10/10 vs 9/10. I'm arguing with the idea that this has somehow been a "failure" which is absurd to me.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 03:10 PM) And this is why I quit saying it. Its all backup quarterback syndrome. What was the alternative and how is it backup qb? We saw what the current core could do: come in 3rd or 4th place with a hot month here or there. Honestly, what would have been better in your opinion? -Keep the current core and plug the holes with bargain bin free agents? Nope -Keep the current core and plug the holes with prime free agents and a 300m payroll? Could have in theory worked as long as you had no duds and had infinite money to spend -Keep the current core and plug holes with home grown talent? What talent & how long would that have taken? Do the Sox not have a decade+ worth of failing at scouting & developing talent?
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 02:53 PM) I am still not thrilled with where we are to be honest, but no one really wants to hear that, so I have pretty much quit talking about it. I watched less baseball and cared less about baseball than I have since before the 1983 team happened. I know I am pretty much alone there too. I am pretty much to praying it all turns out and we don't lose another decade. Sorry, but how could it possibly have gone better? We will end up with the 2016-7 #1 prospect in baseball (Yoan), the likely #1 or #2 prospect in baseball going into 2018 (Eloy), the best 2018 pitching prospect in baseball (Kopech), and a handful of other guys not far behind or already showing signs in the majors. All achieved by trading 3 players and spending some money in the international market. This franchise was effectively dead before the 2016 off season. Nothing in the farm system and likely wasting the primes of Sale/Q/Eaton since it was not possible to build around them without a 400m payroll to fix all the other holes. I haven't been this excited about the future of the Sox since 2006. Is it guaranteed? Of course not, nothing is. Is it light years better than the bulls*** they tried for the previous decade? 1000000% yes.
  10. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 02:05 PM) I'm not saying that another team could've offered better. I'm saying the 3rd piece from Boston should've been better in order for the trade to be fair value. If there was no competition then you can't say what is fair or not. We got what was likely the best offer from any team. The combination of contract & performance of Sale was never going to be a 1:1 deal because no team is selling their entire farm system for 1 guy.
  11. Unless he wins the MVP every year till 2020, I don't see any way he opts out of essentially a 7/200m as a 31 year old. Way too much risk
  12. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 12:21 PM) It's also the end of the deal. Fair value for Sale, IMO, would've been Moncada, Kopech, one of Basabe/Diaz, and one prospect who's better than them but worse than Moncada/Kopech. The 3rd piece was just too light- someone like Travis, Chavis, or Groome would've helped. What other team had that deep of a farm system AND was in contention for a title this past off season that could have offered anything close to that?
  13. Horrific contract for a guy who's been hurt 4 of the last 7 years. Unless the Marlins want to pick up 50% of it, no thanks.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 09:53 AM) What better offer was out there? I sure haven't heard it. Got the best hitting prospect in baseball and the best pitching prospect in baseball. Unless some other team was willing to give us a 6+ for 1 deal, nobody would be able to match that.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 10:31 PM) He would also be an absolutely free agent, and not subject to international caps, so all teams would be open to bid on him without penalty. It would be pretty unprecedented. Interesting...should be all in on him then in that case, no payroll the next 2 years if you can buy premium talent for straight cash do it.
  16. QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 10:14 PM) That Yankees trade dropped it from a 10 to a 9. Whether it was a matter of money or just negotiations, we should've come out better than we did, imo. I dropped another point, to an 8, on our inability to trade any of our vet starters (outside Rodon) for anything by the waiver deadline. Just a low floor/high ceiling A-ball prospect out of trading the bunch would've satisfied me. Flipping FA assets is a big part of a rebuild and it was a weakness. Still, that's a strong ass 8. As I've read countless times on SoxTalk, winning more games than we wanted to during the end of the season, given that most of those wins were due to contributions from our young guys, isn't a bad thing. Kopech and Moncada look to be cornerstones of this franchise for years to come....Eloy has all-star production written all over him, other young guys in the system are progressing very well and those who are scuffling we didn't have particularly high expectations of anyway (Collins kind of excluded, he showed life). I just see those -2 points as being spoiled from the Sale/Eaton/Q deals. We got a 1st round pick we wanted the previous year for an expensive closer we didn't need a reliever coming off 60 good innings. Veteran scrap heap starters aren't worth anything either.
  17. Is there anything actually behind signing this guy or is it just baseless wishful thinking?
  18. QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 05:02 PM) Then I will be equally insulted and irritated by your enjoyment of the next winning teams we field who result from the progress made in the last 8 months. ? I wish the "ignore" button wiped all traces of the poster off the forums so when I get bored I'm not tempted to reply to his nonsense.
  19. The Good: -Surprising performances by guys that were assumed to just be roster-filler: Avi, Leury, Delmonico, Yolmer (partially) -The future 'core' appears to be settling in (Yoan, Gio, Lopez, Anderson's 2nd half) -Abreu having such a good year that makes people want to extend him -Kopech/Eloy tearing up the minors and looking to be contributors to a fringe-wildcard contending 2018 team if everything else goes perfectly -Rodon showing ace potential -It appears the team was almost completely rebuilt in 1 off season way ahead of schedule that could realistically lead to a contending window of several years + tons of money to spend in FA The Bad: -Anderson's first half -Injuries knocking out Leury, Jones, Saladino -Rodon's body The Unknown: -Although the team has been rebuilt, the jury is still out if this franchise can scout/develop it's own talent and not need to pilfer other teams' farm systems. -I don't see Rentaria as the long term manager and that will have to be sorted out eventually
  20. QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 07:55 AM) My only question would be, Why isn't he starting then? Fox knows his job is on the line. For the reasons you've been saying would be my guess. I just don't agree that he needs to sit for 3 years watching terrible QB's play before he'll be any good
  21. QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Oct 1, 2017 -> 10:33 PM) There are 11 games left. If he is compleely terrible, we should worry since typically bad players have a tendency to not ever turn out to be good, although Goff is even disputing that. Goff, Wentz, Newton, Ryan, Wilson, Prescott, Luck, Winston, Mariota, Stafford. All of them started, experienced bumps in the road, and some still are experiencing issues, but no one is expecting a championship this year. We all EXPECT Trubisky to struggle some. That's life as a rookie QB, with a few exceptions. If Trubisky will be "ruined" by starting early then he was never going to be good anyway. Trubisky is currently the best QB on the Bears roster and should be playing, just like any other position on the team.
  22. Nelson Cruz got 4/57 coming off some huge years, I still don't see any team giving an aging DH 4/75
  23. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 10:05 AM) I'll settle this once and for all with one simple question to all the people who are upset that we'll most likely pick 4th instead of 2nd or 3rd (I think we all conceded the top pick to SF a while back - though this tigers drop off has been out of the blue and sudden) Name the top 5 prospects in the draft by name and position without looking it up... I know the names Turang and Singer off the top of my head.. Exactly. In April it was TANK FOR BEER!!! Well guess what he's supposedly a mid to late 1st round pick now. Trout was what? 23rd? Pick 1 and 2 in 2014 was Brady Aiken and Tyler Kolek. Unless there is a Harper, Bryant, etc. at the top there are very few sure guys. From what I understand there are MANY solid players in this draft with no real standout. I wouldn't be surprised if the top pick 3 years from now was from someone who picked 10-20.. Let's look at the top prospects in all of baseball... Torres - signed Robles - signed Vlad Jr - signed Eloy - signed Acuna - signed Rodgers - 1st (3rd) Tucker - 1st (5th) Senzel - 1st (2nd) Kopech - 1st 33rd) Buehler 24 Honeywell 72 Brinson 29 My point? You have to trust our scouts ... This isn't the NBA where one player like Lebron wins you a championship. This isn't like NFL and NBA where a likely consensus top 3 guy is a guarantee.. the 1st round and top picks are littered with injuries and burn outs... if there is something to get bent out of shape about it is that our signing slots are less with each pick down... Yes, you have to trust your scouts. The #1 pick gives those scouts a 100% chance of getting the guy they want.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 10:27 AM) I have said it a million times and will say it until all get aboard the train... These guys being successful is much more important the difference between the #3 and #5 picks in this draft. If we had gone into next season with Moncada and Giolito both having repeats of their call ups last year, if Anderson had continued his April-July through the rest of the season, if Yolmer had hit like Carlos Sanchez, and Avi hit like pre-17 Avi, etc... our rebuild would have been in huge trouble, and put the entire organizations future into doubt. It isn't JUST draft position. The most important thing is that these kids are turning into big leaguers once they get to Chicago. Agreed, but we also won quite a few games with s*** pitchers that have no future in the org. Those are the ones that sting. Needed those to be 8-7 losses with the young guys mashing & the s***ty pitcher getting lit up.
