Q traded to Cubs/Jimenez, Cease ++ to Sox
jenksycat replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 07:33 AM) They do compete for some fans though. When the Sox rating and season ticket base skyrocketed in 2005 and 2006, do you think those were all hardcore Sox fans? I doubt it, I guarantee a lot of these new arrivals are decked in head to toe Cubs gear today. And the fans they don't share are what can help create the rivalry. You might not give the Cubs much thought, but a lot of other fans do, as this board shows. When you have two teams living in such proximity, a rivalry just creates itself, when there is so much interaction between fans. It's a different type of rivalry than a divisional one, but it's definitely there. (And this has nothing to do with the trade, I fully support it, just arguing semantics ) I just refuse to believe that and there's no way to even prove it. Someone who is a big enough fan to purchase season tickets is not the kind of fan that flips teams based on who is winning. The spike in 05/06 was because for the first time in most Sox fan's lifetimes they had what looked to be a real legit team and the fans got behind them. Then almost instantly the team cratered back to where it's been for the other 90 years and people dropped season tickets because you can go to a game for $4 without any trouble. -

Ah what could have been. Sale/Q in the playoffs. If only we could have sniffed competency the last 3 years. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 04:55 PM) Undetermined. The teardown went fine and is nearing completion. Soon, it will be time to build the team back up. It may be that time already. The buildup is the hard part. It's absolutely nowehere near time to "build the team back up". It's 2 years at best away for all these 20 year olds to work their way up to the majors.

QUOTE (whitesoxwinner @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 12:18 AM) I kind of love kenny but I don't really understand what he does for the club now anymore, also don't know how he puts his ego away to let Rick get all of the credit and make all of the deals. What Kenny does for the club: Reminds JR that they won a world series.

QUOTE (KnightsOnMintSt @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 04:37 PM) So its been a little over a day since the trade happened. How is everyone feeling about it now? I'm excited, the only thing that scares me is how far away they are. Obviously we didn't need anyone that could contribute right now, but getting a bunch of guys that aren't proven in the higher level scares me. That being said, I love the trade still. I think Jimenez is the best single prospect we could've gotten in return. Also like "replacing" Quintana with a top pitching prospect as well. 4 moves took us from: one of the worst farm systems in baseball and a sub-.500 MLB team with no chance of contending to top 2 if not #1 farm system in baseball. Pretty incredible, excited about the future of White Sox baseball for the first time since 2008 -

QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 04:27 PM) Why does it matter? It's not like anyone would know if and where the free agents will join up next. We're just speculating if a team would be good in the future. What if the Celtics become like the Warriors, growing superstars through draft behind great coaching system, and a superstar actually flees his home team and join up with them. Celtics themselves could be a good landing spot for ring chasers in a few years. Gambling on the odds that you're going to luck into 3 drafted superstars in a 4 year period + have a HoFer sign a below market value contract with you is a ballsy bet. -

QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 02:21 PM) I don't disagree that they missed a golden opportunity with PG and Butler. Heck I even posted about it last week. It's just that they have so many young assets and picks stockpiled that they will likely be good for a long time. But it's not baseball, windows are so much shorter in the NBA unless you're the Spurs or have Lebron. You basically have to wait out the current crop of prime superstars that all are willing to take less money to play with their buddies and hope the next crop isn't like that. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 12:24 PM) Why should the White Sox pick up any of Sandoval's money? That's Boston's problem. No one is going to help them out there. If it gets us more/better prospects, do it. Exact type of move we should be doing for the next couple years while rebuilding & have no payroll.

If the Marlins are selling, should we be buying?
jenksycat replied to TheFutureIsNear's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Keep KW away from all these prospects so we don't trade for like Miguel Cabrera or something -
All he should have done was taken the best offers. Teams are not lining up to give away their best positional prospects. Acquiring 2 of the top 10 positional prospects, signing another 1 that could climb to that list quickly, along with a bunch of power arms + drafting + $80m to spend to fill holes is great.

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 02:00 PM) The Cubs should've paid Chris Sale price for Jose Quintana is my point. And no, not because of "some silly rivalry", but because of the additional revenue and market share loss the Sox will suffer as a result of this trade, all of which is going to go directly to the Cubs. Huh? I will never understand this argument. What % of fans are the type that flip between teams based on a trade? The Cubs tanked for several years to get where they are now, remember when that happened and all the Cubs fans started cheering for the Sox and going to games? No, because that's not how any of this works. -

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 01:09 PM) Gut reaction is an asset like Q should never be traded to the Cubs, especially without them paying WELL over market value. Not sure how I feel about the return yet, want to do a deeper dig on the prospects before coming to a conclusion there. Why? Who cares? That stupid meaningless rivalry should have died in 2005 and is for sure dead after 2016. -
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 09:08 AM) I agree. Or you use it as a rotating spot. Like you have 9 guys capable of playing at least close to average defense (say like 4 potential every day OF) but each day one gets to rest their legs and DH. Yeah I loved when we had that setup with Kotsay

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 29, 2017 -> 03:00 PM) greg I'm starting to actually be concerned for your health. Do you realize you spent exactly 50% of this post to the word bashing the guy as an overpaid chump and the rest of it pleading for us to sign him? And in other threads pleading for them to stop rebuilding & developing young players and just sign free agent's to create a winning team...then 10 minutes later bashing signing of free agents like Dunn because they suck. Weirdest/longest running troll in internet history

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 26, 2017 -> 07:54 PM) All I can say is I agree. The draft is a ridiculous crapshoot. The best way to win is sign guys like Abreu and (hopefully) Robert. I'm in favor of that cause I could give a s*** about how much money Jerry spends since the chairman and his peeps do not care about us spending 9 bucks for a hot dog and whatever it costs to park at a game. Add to signing guys like Robert SMART drafting when your pick comes up as well as FREE AGENCY, you know, signing guys who have already done it and proven they can do it. You can't change people's minds. Draft-niks won't admit it, but they are part of the sports cliche -- you know, the one that always is more interested in future names than current ones. I won't change my opinion; they won't change theirs. So be it. But there are so many busts out there who are deemed "prospects." Yep, if there's one thing baseball has shown us by the Yankees winning the last 10 championships in a row is that the only possible way to win is to sign every available 30+ year old free agent. There's no shot for a small market team to draft and develop well unless they have a 200 million dollar payroll. If you look at the last couple decades of champs, most of those teams don't have a core of young talent brought up through their system, its almost always old past their prime veterans signed to big contracts.

Welp we can close this thread. Nats trading for K-Rod

Taken with a grain of salt of course...but going from a 20+ ranked farm system to top 3 by most accounts via 2 trades and 1 signing is a pretty decent off season/draft in my opinion. Still going to take some luck and JR not being a cheapass to get these prospects to hit & FA signings in a couple years to fill the hopefully couple holes, but I'll take that over the half-assed bulls*** they've tried the last decade.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 23, 2017 -> 04:36 PM) No. It's not really a dumpster fire of a return either. It's just not what fans were expecting. This is the return I was expecting. I said in my mock draft blog post yesterday that Butler would go to Minny for LaVine, Dunn, and #7. That was always most realistic package. Giving up #16 with him didn't make any sense though. I think his value would have continued to decrease and there was no reason to wait any longer. What would be the point? This was the best deal and they took it. It's not a great package but it's not really about the return. It's about what trading Butler signifies. They've identified that what they were doing didn't make any sense and they are going young. Now they just need to be really bad. They were never going to pay Jimmy Butler $200+ million to play in his early thirties. It just didn't make sense. Trading #16 and dumping a 2nd is really f***ing annoying but I'm so glad that they chose to go this direction. I disagree on the value. What's the worst case if they waited? We don't get Levine and his bionic knee? My guess is they couldn't decide what to do and panicked last minute and took the 'best' of the s***ty offers when they should have just waited it out. There's nothing they got in return that's going to change the face of this franchise so there was no point in not just waiting it out for the year. I agree on picking a lane finally, much like the white sox. But selling a 2nd round pick & this bonehead front office signals they don't have a clue and ensures a garbage franchise for another 5-10 years minimum. -

My issue is....wouldn't this dumpster fire of a return have been available at pretty much any point until the deadline in 2019? -

QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Jun 21, 2017 -> 06:33 PM) While this is somewhat true, if you get the one superstar, free agents are more likely to join you to play with them. It will be interesting to see if Houston clicks on the model, because there are a lot of potential movers to Houston. Yeah I remember the good ol days when the Bulls signed all the top free agents when they had a prime Rose. No top free agent is signing in Milwaukee to play with Giannis. No top free agent is going to sign in OKC once Russ leaves. Top free agents are going to either: stay with the team that drafted them for more money or going to LA/Mia or tax free states. Best you can do are overpay Carlos Boozer types who aren't winning you championships. Only other way is to fall ass backwards into a couple superstars and have a competent enough FO to not completely screw it up. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 20, 2017 -> 05:05 PM) They also own the Nets pick. That is a lot of high caliber picks...plus Jaylen Brown (who is a pretty valuable asset.). Lakers/Kings is getting you a high pick....Nets is getting you a high pick...Jaylen Brown is a year removed from being a high pick...and you get other future picks / players. I don't see the Celts giving up #3, Lakers/Kings pick, Nets pick, and Brown but I'd take it. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 20, 2017 -> 03:33 PM) So if you were offered a package of the #3 pick, the Lakers pick next year, the Nets pick, multiple other 1st rounders plus say a Jaylen Brow, you wouldn't think about it? What if Davis gave the Pelicans a bit of a nudge. I think Boston absolutely has the ability to do something. "multiple other 1st rounders" are worthless if they're the Celts own picks. The lakers/kings pick is a gamble. That's not enough.
